Well, it will be that much more satisfying to see you pull out that difficult start. I do admire Ursa's pluck as a player. When I get a start like this, I just exit game. But that's why I'm nowhere near the player.

I've started to appreciate slow starts a lot more since watching this and other series. Sometimes you get 4 cities by turn 25 and sometimes you get 1 by turn 75, but it ultimately doesn't matter because you are going to make better decisions more often than the AI and find a satisfying way to make it happen. I find that unless you rig the map that the game rarely gives you ideal situations (nice look at that plus 5 X...oh wait I've been double forward settled). You've got to make it work, and it is very satisfying when it does
@UrsaRyan9 ай бұрын
Exactly this!!! That's why the late game is amazing - you can do SO much more late game per turn than early game. Stick in, if you're alive at turn 175, you can still win!!

In today's episode, it's all about the money. But it apparently does not exactly go as planned. After the bear explains some things we begin, and get introduced to Mali, and the game gets explained. A plan is formed and a city is founded on mercury, that can't be safe, then Kilimanjaro is discovered, and Zanzibar shortly after. Then a Barbarian Clan is discovered, which provides Warriors for hire. Both Valetta and Jerusalem then makes themselves known, alas Mali is not the first to discover the red city state. A tribal village provides additional population for Niani, which is growing rapidly, a decision is made to limit its growth. Then Mali meets Hungary, uh-oh, after Matthias denounces Mali, Korea is met which is less bad. Hungary goes right for Niani, and declare war. Hungary loses multiple units attacking Mali across the river and through the marshes. Mali selects City Patron Goddess as their pantheon, as the next wave of Hungarian troops march towards Niani. A source of Horse is discovered as Hungary continue to send soldiers into the meat grinder that is Malian lands. Another Barbarian Clan is met, and Singarpore shortly afterwards. A Barbarian spearman is recruited, and the Malian scout takes the camp just afterwards, discovering Vesuvius in the process. Hungary regrets forward settling and then declaring war on Mali, losing a city in the process before suing for peace. The Niani holy site gets finished, and the city immediately begins doing holy site prayer projects to try and force through a religion. Canada introduces themselves to Mali, as Korea starts to menace the borders. Mali enters an unfortunate Dark Age, as Korea declares a surprise war on them, which leads to the discovery of Hattusa. Korea loses two units in rapid succession, and their remaining troops flee after being heavily wounded. Canada proves they are lovely as always and accept a friendship with Mali, and the first mine gets built in Niani. Mali learns that they sadly lack Iron, but on the other hand, they slowly but surely press Korea back to their own lands. Mali builds their first Caravan and sends it to Hungary. Some clever pillagin leads to not one, but two envoys getting recruited in short order. Amani gets sent to Valetta, while Pingala is put in Niani to help boost science and culture yields a little. Political philosophy gets discovered, and Mali picks their first government. After picking their policies, they send envoys to Valetta to head off Amani. Mali builds their first, of hopefully many, Sugubas, getting a well needed economic boost. Korea continues to get their lands pillaged by Mali, and suffering from decision paralysis allows the Malian troops to run rampant in their lands. Is Ursa mad as a hatter? Is it because he settled on Mercury? Will Mali recover and manage a win? Is it desert or a dessert? Turn in next episode, same Ursa time, same Ursa channel!

For me that's instant restart, Mali is already an difficult civ to start when you get a decent start, dealing with early Deity agression is quite a tough challenge!

This game is actually an excellent example of why some people seriously overrate Mali. Yes, if they get going their snowball is awesome, but their early game is just awful and on higher difficulties that really hurts. Ursa would be substantially better off right now if he were playing a Civ with literally no abilities.
@jhtrq14659 ай бұрын

City patron godess does NOTHING for mali. Subugas are already half prize. They can be chopped out with 1.5 chops (one woods one rainforest-doesnt get better than that). Mali wants to have them up ASAP (the turn you settle the city) Bonus production doesnt carry over. You were better off with lady of reeds and marshes. That +4 production early game would have been HUGE. Heck free builder and 10% growth boost would have been better. Also should have settled on other side of marshes to get lady of reeds pantheon fast and later boosted up your traders furher thanks to having more desert tiles. Also...the -30% affects BUILDINGS not districts. Kudos on relifous community tho. Severely underrated for trade civs

@@UrsaRyan There are NICHE use cases for it. Mainly abusing the "if theres NO SPECIALTY district already built" .rome and Vietnam can abuse this as they have a district thats REALLY good to build b4 your specialty one that gets boosted. Germany another great use cass as he can go back and forth between two districts turn he settles, plus the aqueduct. Khmer to lesser extent as he greatly benefits from aqueducts and extra production is nice but really competes with river goddess. Spain, aztec and egypt also get boosts to building districts so this is nice. But mali is just not one of these civs that has good synergy with this pantheon.
