Yup , transmission broke around 3,000 miles and I had many exterior problems . 5 times in the shop in 5 months . Glad I sold her off with no upside down . I’ve asked a couple of Type R owners about their transmissions and many say they do have the 1st to 2nd gear grind and some have gotten another transmission as well.
@TedwardDrives5 жыл бұрын
it seems hit or miss honestly.. People get so defensive which is annoying because pretending it's not an issue solves nothing. Plus those who say its bulletproof probably aren't driving them very hard
@waterboyz94415 жыл бұрын
Tedward exactly , I had people tell me it was my fault because I was racing and pushing her too hard . Uhhh isn’t the Type R advertised as a race car ?? Lol It did seem to fix the issue once the new transmission was put in I’m sure it was a 18 but I still had to put amsoil transmission oil just for added protection. Thanks for the video keep up the great content !

Just found your channel, cool. I own a type R that isn't really daily driven, but it's definitely tracked on a regular basis. I maintain my car impeccably so it's cool to find another Type R owner that is into upgrading/maintaining this chassis.
@TedwardDrives5 жыл бұрын
what sort of issues have you run into after 20+ minutes on track? We've heard stories of boiling clutch fluid and heat soak...So far so good, but next summer it's going to see some serious abuse so we'll be doing our best to cool and reflect heat
@johnd93575 жыл бұрын
Tedward yes, it will heat soak in the summer. Your oil cooler is a must. Bigger radiator didn’t really make a difference, so I’d skip that. The guys at USR found that out for us. Definitely upgrade the brake fluid, i use rbf600 and it works great. You will definitely need rotors if you drive hard. Mine warped after the first track day. I use girodisc rotors now with no issues. Brake pads are hawk dtc60s but I recommend going with carbotech instead. The brake are a must, really. Especially at fast tracks like road Atlanta where you go from 140 to 50 in a very short time. Generates a lot of heat. I’d definitely change the tranny fluid also for some syncromesh and also maybe use Motul 5w-40 for the track. Any extra protection is nice. That’s all I can think of right now. The big fix for overall heat soak is the oil cooler and you’re already doing that. One of the biggest upgrades you can do is getting some forged wheels with good tires. The Yokohama a052 is amazing. Honestly can’t say enough good things about that tire. Pairing the titan7 forged wheels with the girodisc rotors and you’re pulling over 60 pounds off the rotating mass. Makes a HUGE difference in how the car feels on track. The stock wheels are way too heavy and the tires are junk, i hate to say. They will have great grip for about 5 laps then they are gummy as all hell. As far as power, I’ve done all my track days with catless downpipe and ktuner stage 1 base map. Makes plenty of power. That’s all I can think of right now.

2017, 2018, 2019's all having transmission issues. Honda not even acknowledging there is a problem like the DC5/FG2/FA5 3rd gear popout that took years to fess up to. Not everyone is experiencing the issue but the amount of people complaining about the same issues illustrates there is something going on. I have a 2018 Type R, 10,000 miles and it does have small transmission issues. I have reached out to 60+ people all experiencing the same 1 or 2 issues so far... Was the owner of this car happy with his new transmission + all other replaced parts? I have heard mixed reviews between people saying its fixed vs. the new transmission is actually worse.
@TedwardDrives5 жыл бұрын
So far so good on the new gearbox but we'll see how it holds up over the next season of enthusiastic use. It's a shame that something so critical is a weak point on this car. Overall it's so great but out of warranty it poses big uncertainties

I know you said not everyone experiences it, so I am just throwing in my 2 cents. Got my 2017 Type R in June 2017, and have had zero transmission issues. Never had issues with my DC5 transmission either, even though it is a swapped motor/transmission into a 2000 Civic. Guess I am lucky =/
@brandnewty5 жыл бұрын
@Mathew Macaulay Wow, Jesus, are you serious? This is the worst case I've heard. I would definitely not accept this. I cannot believe you were any rougher on the car than I was and I am now at 10,500 miles. Unless you genuinely did something wrong like a big downshift into 2nd I would lawyer up on this one. I have already been turned down at this point for class action representation until I build a little bit more thorough of a case, but if you want to email me or contact me on the Civicx forums let me know, id like to document everyone with an issue that I can. Heres my experience. Drove the car 1000 miles home on day one, no issues. Issues eventually with 2nd gear crunch, mostly while revving out 1st gear a little bit. Turned off Revmatch and it made the problem a little bit better. Pretty much I just treat 1st like a granny gear and stay out of it. I believe the tranny gets a little better with a "break in period" say 10,000 miles. I plan on replacing fluid with Motul products. Like I said hit me up if you'd like to document your issues with me, but I don't trust Honda (I love the car still) and I am going to have my own people work on the car outside of trying to document the problem first with a dealer ive spoken to who sounded reasonable. Will keep accumulating peoples experiences and eventually start a thread to get some traction going again for a class action/defective product suit.
