I was deciding among an STI, GTI, CIVIC TYPE R, and Veloster N. Thanks to a silver lining of quarantine, I got to drive every car by myself. The Veloster for me took last place overall. Well after having my mind blown by the type R, I couldn't justify the price because a used STI seemed to be a better deal. I got into a 2016 STI and was told to "take my time" test driving. I slammed it for 45 minutes and gave it a real hard thought and came to a conclusion: I called the Honda dealership and bought my 2020 Type R in the Subaru parking lot that day.

I’m not sure if I can put a finger on it, but the engine feels less perky, suspension feels more numb and the car feels like it was being kept from realizing it’s full potential. I guess if I were to choose one word, dull comes to mind. I just had more fun driving the 2005.
@doctorrobert604 жыл бұрын
@@timkono5645 I agree. I think the 2005 is less burdened with mandated safety and emissions equipment, less insulation, thinner glass making the 2005 lighter. This would make it have better power to weight ratio which would make it faster and handle better.

@@doctorrobert60 One thing i can notice right away is that the hood is aluminum on the 04/05 sti and believe the roof as well which was done for weight savings. Lastly, there is no antenna as it is integrated into the rear window with the defroster. I also did a side to side visual comparo with the 05 engine and there are more lines and more attachments, which tells me that the engine was updated quite a bit to meet the emmissions regs you mention. it not just optimizes the cars performance with these little tweaks, it also makes the car's overall look very simple.

I am in my mid 40s and I LOVE my 2019 Civic Type R. I guess I am old because I am not going to change a thing! As you get older you value something called a warranty and there is no way I am going to mess that up. If I want to go faster I have FORZA. As a husband and a father of a teenager this car is a keeper for sure. As we get into a time where some people want to electrify everything on 4 wheels I believe drivers cars like the Civic Type R represent the pinnacle of gas powered cars. Sure electric cars may be quicker but there is no better bond between man and machine than a great engine, a balanced chassis and a good manual. It is so comfortable as well with plenty of power to make it fun for a dad mobile. I love how much room the trunk has so I can toss a stroller and bags in there with ease. I passed on a 2000 Integra Type R back then when they were new and said I would never make that mistake again and bought my current type R and have been so happy with it meeting my needs. If you are considering a WRX STI, go drive one of these, you probably will end up buying them. I wasn't allowed to test drive so I jumped in a Facebook group and asked someone locally if I could drive theirs and they were so friendly and helpful to let me drive it. This car runs circles around any Subaru including the S209. From seating position, steering feedback, shifter feel, ride, body rigidity, interior room and comfort, cornering precision/overall handling, high speed stability, linear power delivery ......I literally can’t think of any area other than perhaps engine sound where this car isn’t so far superior and the fact that it gets there with FWD is like winning an ass kicking contest with only one leg. I’ll admit I thought this car was ridiculous when Honda first announced it was going to do an over 300HP front wheel drive car in a segment that already had (at the time 2017) some great AWD competition but after spending time in one it’s truly a world class driving experience coming from someone who has owned several Porsche GT cars. Such an amazing car. I have a 2018 and cant get enough. The styling is a little crazy but to me that was the appeal. Golf r looked too plain. Sti is too old. Focus rs is gone. I wanted something new. Something different. I think overheating is a big issue with those who run aggressive tunes. My final thoughts are that as a young kid I watched the car scene blow up with body kits and wheel mods. Never had enough money to make it happen so I spectated. Fast forward to 2018 I bought my car with that same child like excitement except instead of having some horrible looking body kit that doesnt fit honda gave all the exterior flare like a body kit from the factory. I know there are people who will still mod this car but too me you can run stock and the car looks like you spent money doing a legit custom design. Great review

@@bassandspaceable If honda made a new s2000 it would probably be an excellent car and at 60k people would still buy it, I know I would. Honda completely delivered on the type r the car community in the real world loves it unlike the supra. Honda wouldn't fuck up the s2000 like Toyota did the supra. Just because the s2k will be different from the older one doesn't mean it won't be better. The new type r is more fun than any other type r it's the first one to be serious attempt at being a sports car. It's leaps and bound different from the older type rs and it's wildly successful and respected. As long as the s2k has a honda engine and a track tuned suspension it will sell just fine. I daily drive a GT86 and test drove the CTR today. The power from this driveline is incredible. I love the pedal responds and mechanical shift feel. The directness reminds me of my s2k, it almost felt NA. Many say the sound this four popper makes doesn't match its looks but I wasn't disappointed with the sound. More loudness would make it too ricy for me. The art of FWD is perfected in this car BUT.. I still notice the unrest in the steering when pushing the car. When driving my 86 home I immediately felt what I miss in the CTR. The test car had 11K miles on it and the front tires were almost done. They go for about $200-300 a piece so the consumables on the car seem to be high (with the 86 I do double the miles of spirited driving and the tires are still reasonable). Driving the car in comfort mode it felt too wobbly for me. I guess drive modes are fashionable these days but I would be happy with some ohlins or KWs if that would lower cost and complexity. Bottom line... I'm not sure if I can part with the 86... the 86 dances with you and you feel it with the hips. The CTR is brilliant in its way but I like how Mark says "it makes you wish for Honda to do something RWD".

another amazing video. Outside of some brake pad woes I went through with Carbotech for the track, the Type R is an amazing car. I considered upgrading from my 2019 to the 2020 but it's just not enough additional value for me to trade up. Maybe I am weird, but at 37 years old I have no issues with the styling but I also love my german car styling as well. I don't take a hard stance on the flashiness of the Type R aesthetic vs. my much more refined B9 S4 or E92 M3. I love them all. This video sums up the Type R so well. I would encourage anyone considering one of these cars to take what this video says to heart. As someone who has owned this for 16 months now I love it and added a few cooling bits like upgraded intercooler, also upgraded to a Mugen steering wheel and short shifter/knob...with some good tires it's really an amazing "do everything" car. It's more enjoyable at Road America than my M3, and it's practical with the hatch space and 4 doors and the Comfort mode of adaptive dampening is really amazing for what this car is. I do have concerns about the computers in the car as it ages and reliability over time which is completely unproven, but I think as Mark says - you need to weigh everything when it comes to cars, and something to weigh is "if you want a modern car, you will potentially sacrifice some autonomy and ability to DIY fix some things or maintain your car on the cheap" but the upside in this case is that there really isn't anything that does what the Type R does for a driving enthusiast as a daily, practical machine. And to those of us who have bought the car, it's well worth it.
@BigBear-- Жыл бұрын
All you really need for these more modern cars is a decent scanner, that has bidirectional controls, which you can pick up for around $300-$500 on places like Amazon. With that in hand and some googling skills, or even better a personal subscription to ALLDATA, you can DIY anything.

I’m a 73 year old movement junky, I respect Honda’s constant quest for excellence, so rare these days because of the values it embraces. Loved Honda ever since I spent some time in my little brothers 1993 white NSX, but I was not in a position to pluck down 30+K for this car. I did drive a 2013 SI and liked it, at less then 1/2 the price. But then while finalizing a deal for my wife at the Hyundai dealership, I noticed the intention of design of a black coupe. Crouched down and ready to pounce the lines just intersected and murmured... speed. Well after a test drive where I did make the sales rep stammer. A couple of weeks of back and forth later and she was mine. The car has limitations even with the 6speed Manuel. Naturally aspirated 3.8 liter V6, revs out to 7000 Rpm, track tuned suspension, brembo stopping power, limited slip, REAR WHEEL DRIVE, and the best seats and driving position, you can see out of the damn thing🤭 2015 Genesis coupe 3.8 Rspec.

one issue with the japanese were that they were horrendous at designing cars that on a universal level, doesn't look completely idiotic. If you visit Japan you will know what I mean, although at least within their own culture that's perfectly acceptable and even something to culturally appreciate. However, Jeremey Clarkson got it right that when they had to attract the younger masculine western market, they simply went and adopted a design inspiration that was entirely European. See for example the birth of the Lexus LS400, employing their top designers to sunbathe in sunny california for a few months to observe and then steal styling cues from bits from Mercedes, others from BMW, others from well, Mercedes lol. Another clearer example would be the NSX and Ferrari's at the time. In a sense the JDM design culture is borne out of the Japanese desperation to appeal to the horsepower thirsty Westerner, of course the little twists and subtle changes within them eventually defined what came to be known as the JDM car culture, now looking unique on their own. Yet for some strange reason they still can't quite get it right themselves after all these years. The new NSX for example, completely designed by a white American woman who is also pretty young and kinda hot. On the other hand, the distinctive presence of the E36 is actually quite easy to explain, as that was designed by a Japanese car designer, and it's probably one of the most badass looking BMW's ever made. I'm dreading to find out who designed the LS500 as I consider that my favorite car of all time in terms of pure beauty, fingers crossed the Japanese weaved themselves a metallic masterpiece.

I'm okay with the styling in that color, to be honest. The unforgivable thing for me is the fake engine noise. Total dealbreaker.

it sounds discusting, but you can unplug it behind the glovebox which is the first thing I would do if i had this car

Then this may upset you... A lot of car manufacturers do the fake engine noise thing now...

Mike Ireland It doesn’t make it okay just because everyone else is doing it. It just feels disingenuous to do that to the driver. If an engine sounds “bad” I personally would rather hear that than constantly try to be deceived.

Tbh I always think the fake noise never sounds as bad as people make it out to be but this one sounds awful. It's like if you took an uninspired non sporty family car and amped up its sound and piped it in

Good job once again! I’ve owned several vehicles, and by far my 19 CTR is my all around favorite. I can’t imagine ever getting rid of it.

I snagged my CTR (18) and had it for two months. I can already tell it's a keeper and have already dumped $5k into mods, I'm not stopping any time soon. The fact it's my daily, fast as fuck, can store so much in the trunk and come back from a track day -- this car is a gem no one will understand until they own one.

Love this car, but Honda needs to add an appearance package for us middle-aged guys.

I agree. Great car, but I would go Golf R all day because they lost me on the styling.

Isn't there the limited edition or something that's a bit more tame? I wouldn't know, it doesn't come to Australia.

Went from a 97 Lincoln Town car to this spaceship. Got it in black because of the crazy styling but I gotta say, the looks grew on me and now regret not getting it in white. The car has taught me so much about driving. I went from having all the nannies on like the rev match to heel and toe downshifting with traction control completely off. It is a hero in a world of mundane, safe cars. Just make sure you budget in getting some smaller lighter wheels that can fit some 265's. The extra grip is worth a little torque steer ;)

I’ve wanted a type R ever since they announced it 2-3 years ago. I’m not a fan of the styling, but every review I’ve seen speaks highly of this car. It’s tailor made for the windy, mountain roads that surround my hometown of Ojai, Ca. I’m driving a RAV4 now-The V6 version, mind you!-, and though it has ample straight forward power and AWD for shitty weather, it’s just not a mountain road carving machine I believe the Honda to be. Another great video from Savage Geese!
