A proven way to tackle new sets (Magic tested), with added mechanics that move the story forward, and a set dedicated to it to keep it fresh. A sense of progression is always good! More importantly, I don't know much about Alpha Clash but it's big and easy enough to be trackable for outside lookers. Hopefully, these cards will make "Portals" playable moving forward, without needing a LOT more design space dedicated to it in future sets (so as to introduce new changes).

So I struggled to think of something that War was actually good for (absolutely- NOTHIN', say it again! ...ok, I'll stop) because he has so much working against him. Any ping effect that targets War could just as easily target any other clash card. What's worse, it's implied that (much like with Enrage) War actually needs to survive what damaged him to activate, meaning War must only be dealt a maximum of 1 damage to trigger. And finally, lacking Contenders as a targetable type means he can't even do my favorite thing in Alpha Clash today: ping Torque the Diabolical for exactly 1 damage and draw a card. So how do you get the most out of War? (Not counting Portal shenanigans, as we don't know any other portal-dependent card besides Conquest.) Attack things with ATK1 exactly. This includes contenders... or at least most contenders that we know about. (Haven got spoiled as a Blue contender and I have serious doubts she _also_ follows the 1/0 template.) In fact, if War attacks something that's exactly ATK1 DEF2 (or even just having 2 DEF remaining), like himself, his attack will do 1 damage, he will receive 1 back and survive, his ability will trip, and effect damage will deal the fatal 1 point of damage to the clash you attacked _juuuuuuust_ an instant before clash damage falls off, killing the attacked clash. Apparently clash damage doesn't fall off until all triggers have resolved in the combat the clash was involved in, including non-clash damage abilities which could combine with the clash damage. (I talked with a playtester once, and in a question surrounding Torque Expelling Energy in particular, the tester explained that this was the intent of such an interaction.) War is definitely a more complicated Flare to be sure, but merely having a different application over being strictly worse. I think the above is how he's supposed to be used. The biggest problem is that New York City and Grant Park Chicago do nothing for him, so hopefully we'll see a clashground fit for the Harbingers as well in the upcoming set. Or maybe more clashgrounds that work for Harbingers _and_ something else, like Denver has its alt use as a buff to Rogues. In fact, given how likely it is that Harbingers will span basically all colors, multiple Harbinger-buffing clashgrounds might be necessary. What better set for something like that than a set literally called Clashgrounds?
