Back in the early to mid 50s when I was a kid, before the interstate highway system, my parents would drive state highways between Fort Worth and Abilene, Texas. Back then, most, if not all the old trucks ran about 45 MPH. No one was in a major rush so it was not unusual to see trucks parked at a roadside beer joint. It was also not unusual to see an empty beer can come flying out of a truck. This was in a time when truck drivers would go out of their way to help a stranded motorist or buy a hitchhiker lunch--and probably a cold one.

No seat belts until around 1965. No air and poor heating if you were in sub zero weather. Plus many had to drive way over hours to make a dollar. These guys were real pros. A co-worker who I worked with in the 1970s & 80s lost his dad in a truck accident in 1955 on Route 66 in New Mexico. It is believed that he fell asleep while driving.

Those days, the trucks without air conditioning had to drag a chain to ground out static electricity. It used to happen that when the driver got out of the truck, the static discharge could knock him out because it was so powerful. Now that almost all trucks have air conditioning with static discharge, it is rare to see a truck dragging a chain.
