Here is a short video on removing, inspecting, cleaning, and re-jetting the main jet on a Vintage VW Carburetor. This is great to do if you have an advanced header or muffler system on your VW, and to also get that lil extra kick on the road.

The fuel of today has an alcohol mix. The percentage depends on your location. To maintain the original power design of your VW, you must increase jet size. If you install "Big Bore" jugs and increase the piston size, you also have to increase the jet size.

I recently upped my pistons and replaced carburetor at same time. Seems like carb took adjustments better with smaller jet. I forgot to oil o rings and they tore on bypass, not sure if this is why dies out on acceleration.

I'm envious at how quickly and strong that Beetle started up... hard start relay? Very informative video.

Hmmm, have you done a vid on starting/starting issues? I have a '74 Ghia autostick that is reluctant to kick over quickly... certainly not like the bug in this vid

Hi Chris. I have a '65 T1 that's running way too rich with an all stock setup (distributor, coil, exhaust, intake manifold - all are rebuilt). The stock 28 PICT - 1 came with two main jet sizes, 0120 and 0122.5. Have you done any videos on re-jetting stock carbs? I'm at least considering the smaller diameter 0120 size main jet for starts. I've also read that when you replace one jet you should replace the others because they are all dependent on each other for different uses (at idle and as RPMs increase). The fuel pressure is at around 4 PSI. What do you recommend in this situation...trying to lean down a rich motor (without buying valves)? Thanks.

Fuel pressure is too much! 4psi is too high, it should be like 2 - 2.5psi. That's why it is rich.

excellent video. VERY well shot, clear to see what is being explained. I was just literally researching jets today, as I've put on a new carb, my old jets where crushed when I pulled them out. The old carb was beat up by the previous owner, and is a big repair job. QUESTION! I have a stumble off idle, and when cruising at low rpm. Everything else seems to be in order before I swapped carbs, I'm thinking its a jet issue. So would a stumble off idle and at low rpm be LEAN? or RICH? so I can buy the appropriate jet size. Again, all your videos are priceless! i'm very new to bugs, and classics, and your work has been amazing help. THANK YOU

Might not be jets, could be your distributor. Do you have an 009?

no sir, I replaced the oo9 that was on it (it was causing a miss so bad I had to pull over when the engine got hot) with a mechanical and vacuum advance SVDA Distributor I messed with it for a bit, and it looks like my 30/31 had the jets swapped around, small idle, big main, So I switched them out, and will see if this clears it up a little. If so, I think I'm moving in the right direction.

well the jet change did not help, swapping them seemed to make it worse....

Chris. Have you ever re-jetted the idle circuit? So many of the Solex carbs. and Chinese look-a-like carbs. are hard to get to idle. Always is a lean condition that cleaning does not help. Even brand new carbs. right out of the box mounted on new manifolds with no vacuum leaks have idle trouble when the choke goes off.
@classicvwbugs

We have not done that, no.

Chris. Thanks for your prompt reply. Any suggestions where I might get a selections of idle circuit jets? I would think that a VW dealership will just say the word "obsolete". I would like to make it just a little on the richer side like I set mixture screws. Thanks.

Dang these main jets are different to my type three. The jet is under that bolt and as you loosen the jet it often falls inside the bowl!
