MeJo often gets asked by students how the Gratz apparatus is different than other Pilates apparatus. In this mini workshop she demonstrates how the exercises are altered when changes to the apparatus take place. You'll see for instance how if you change the angle of the strap by putting it up on risers, it changes the angle of every arm exercise, or how the gear placement alters how much work is required to pull the carriage back in-a crucial element in the Pilates method. It's fascinating information that will help you get more out of your Gratz as well as show why Joe built it the way he did. Filmed at Alycea Ungaro's Real Pilates™, New York, NY.

Very informative! My first experience with reformers was with a Gratz reformer and I got in super shape. My instructor was excellent with cueing and inspiring me to safely push my limits. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, I am no longer attending classes. Because I have missed this workout so much, I have been researching home reformers. You answered my questions about the rational of the angles and distances of the reformer! Thank you for sharing!

Very well explains the differences between using a gratz and contemporary reformers. Appreciate you showing how using a Gratz has specific effects on the exercise are very insightful. Having your student Monica do the demo helped tremendously

Hi Mejo! I want to start saying that I loved your explanation. Thanks for that! But, I would like to say that when someone ask/say "do you feel your stomach" it makes a little uneasy. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but we work our abs/core and not our stomach. The stomach is to hold and process what we eat. I teach and study Pilates and want the best for our industry. By the way, I love your voice. Thanks for sharing the video.

I loved this explanation but I have to disagree with the remark that the length of the gratz fits everyone. It's almost too short for me and I'm only 5'9". When I sit myself on the reformer, prep to swinging into position on my back, I can have only 1/2 of one cheek on the reformer and the rest of me is hanging over the end well and, even so, when I lie down, my shoulders are jammed against the shoulder blocks. I imagine that Pilates was below medium height. And with the short-box, when I put my feet under the strap, in order to straighten my leg I have to sit way back on the box and have no space between my bottom and the back edge of the box so that there's no support from the box for the sacrum when I roll back. So, despite the remark that I've heard that "whether you're 4'2" or 6'2" the gratz reformer works for you" that's not true and was certainly not made by a tall person.

I'm also very tall. Measuring 5 ' 10 1/2" and I have no problem using this reformer. I found it to be much harder/efficient to work the body than the balanced body reformers i've also used. your classical instructor will gear it out for you to start where your knees aren't jammed up into footbar and you should pull away from shoulder block 1/2 inch.

Honestly, I don't know... but you can always go to a studio that uses their equipment. Here's a link to their studio directory: www.pilates-gratz.com/pages/gratz-store-locator

I’m wondering if this reformer works as well for a taller person or is it better suited for a short person?

I have men in my classes who are 1,86 cm and very long legs. They would have a problem right ?

Hi Anna, It’s not a problem for taller people. The Gratz Reformer has a second gear for taller people. There’s also an 86” and 89” model you can buy. Have a great day!

In practice, yes they would have a problem as they approach 190cm and above… With movements like the long stretch or semicircle that have the arms outstretched, you are likely to collide with the end of the machine. Particularly if they have long limbs relative to height.
