Hi Raffi! I’ve watched many “Hi Ren” reactions and really appreciate/learned from your commentary on the guitar playing. I’d love to see you react to Ren’s trilogy “The Tale of Jenny and Screech,” where he uses the guitar in some interesting ways to enhance the story. I will check out more of your stuff. Great video!

If we can't even say the word suicide then we can't have a meaningful conversation about it and how to prevent it. One thing i noticed is when ren released the song su!cide it got age restricted and demonetized but then when he released murderer, that was fine. It seems funny that they'll allow murder but not suicide.

Exactly how can we help and support about a subject we cant can’t give recognition and talk freely about, how many rappers especially uk drill literally “confess”(under artistic license to not have any repercussions) to murders, drug dealing/use, yet we can’t talk about a suicide, whenever we lose someone to it, all ya hear is “they seemed so happy, we had no idea they were feeling like that” maybe because the society we live in basically tells you to shut up and not talk about about it

Normally, when a chord structure isn't finished, I lose my mind (like not singing the last note in Happy Birthday,) but Ren's not singing that last note to resolve the music at the end is so fitting. His life isn't done, so there's room to tell more of the story, which he accomplishes by not including one note. Genius.

Ren uses 'The Devils Interlude', a classical musical term used when a set of notes are played in a certain order to make the listerner feel a particular way, a sense of unese and foreboding in the music. So Ren uses it when the personna of the Devil takes over. Totally intentional as while Ren isn't a classically trained guitarist, he has and does study all form and structures of music. He's the Bruce Lee of music, and takes all the best techniques from every style and picks and chooses what and how he wants to make us feel in his expression. If that's not the definition of a master craftsman, then I don't know what is! 💕🐷

Yep - in one interview, he says he had 2 piano lessons when he was little and bailed; he said something to the effect of he figures he did the teacher a huge favour to not put them through any more than that. I'm a classically-trained pianist... his self-taught piano is pretty impressive, although the tension he holds in his wrists/hands/fingers marks him pretty immediately as someone who hasn't studied formally. He can't "properly"/"fully" control his touch on the keys (like, the range of sound & expression professional musicians have to be able to access *at will*) but he's absolutely more than able to play in ways that suit what he needs out of the instrument.

I just saw your Hi Ren reaction, and put this journal entry of Ren's as my comment to that reaction. jAN 01, 2023 rEN~ Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticize or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed. I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head. When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus. These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between. My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished. My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world. The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war. For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person. I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought. Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours. I can't wait for you all to hear it.

Yes, it seems like a mix, sometimes he uses southern England dialect and then odd bits of north Wales creeps in. It's a weird one to place for people who aren't native English. His accent is definitely more Southern, nowadays. (this is coming from a Yorkshire-woman!). :D

I'm a southerner, but I hear more of a Greater London accent in Ren, not southern. My mum has a similar accent to him, who is from what used to be called Middlesex, now Greater London. I barely hear any Welsh in his accent, which is usually a strong accent, it comes out occasionally though.
@patrickquinlan
@patrickquinlan 3 ай бұрын
@@debbee0867 I was born in the same region, Middlesex / Greater London. I have never heard anyone from there sounding remotely like Ren but I do struggle to place his accent. I say Northern Welsh because that is where he grew up and that accent is nothing like the Southern Welsh accent we are all more familiar with. I just watched some short videos about accents from the north and there are several. Some sound very Welsh while others sound English. Ren's vowels sounds reveal a northern sound we rarely see in the South. He spent time in Bath as well as Brighton so that may have influenced him. Anyway, thanks for your comment. I have great respect for anyone who cares enough about Ren to wonder about his accent and take the time to share that care.

@@catsandcrafts171 I just listened to recordings of the North Wales accent and sometimes it sounds like a Lancashire accent and other times it is quite similar the South Wales. There are enough of us "renegades" to point you in a good direction :) I didnt hear mention of Ren being the master of one takes. He did this video as a live performance, no cuts. He has a few more like that :) have fun digging in!😅

It's quite derivative but his piano arrangement on 'Money Game 3' is classical.

Being self taught may well be how he is able to do what pleases him, and has no ingrained "do's & dont's" on guitar to stifle his creativity? It is not just artists who second guess themselves daily. Every human experiences this, it is just some pay more attention. Very interesting getting this perspective. The up and down scales (?) of classical and jazz mentioned show up more in Violet's tale. Perhaps the *Tales of(Jenny, Screech and Violet, would be a good trilogy to do next, Raffi, since guitars are featured to the max. in all 3 tales. If you do the Tales on your own, Please, please watch all three in one sitting. Use the Official Video which starts with Jenny, then Screech and ends with Violet's tale. I look forward to seeing more reactions and discovering your music as well.

Some people definitely thrive by learning completely on their own. Someone like me loves studying as much as possible. Again it's up to each person to learn what works best for them though. I mentioned this to some others but that's the most requested song right now so I'm doing it next and I'm planning on doing it all in one sitting. Thank you for the response and the support!

Accent : I totally agree with the pronounced effect of REN’s British accent. It’s a mix of accents as he said once on Instagram. There are vowel sounds that are close to a more northern English accent, but some strong South Eastern English, even London cockney sounds. If there is a trace of Welsh it is very light as I can’t hear it. I’m from London with a parent who grew up on the Welsh border. Attentive as Ren is to detail, he no doubt makes use of the landscape of accents from the British Isles like another musical instrument.

Thank you Raffi … Hi Ren and The Tales is how many of us were introduced to Ren…. Brother, these are just the beginning, there is sooooo much ahead for you and also much in the past, REN is world class, independent and no money behind him is the only reason he isn’t a world wide name. But he will be, and you guys will be a part of that Thank you Raffi

Awesome reaction! I dropped a sub! Us humans have been hardwired since the caveman days towards what's called "Negative Bias" It means we automatically get drawn to the negative. It's what kept us alive when we first started walking the earth. it put fear into us to know hey I shouldn’t go pet that line over there because I saw him eat my friend Jimmy yesterday. Or, I shouldn't eat those red berries that Sarah ate because she's been throwing up and having horrible stomach issues for over a week. Back then we needed that fear to teach us what to do what not to do to keep us alive. It's all scientific fact and well documented. UNFORTUNATELY nowadays all negative bias does for us is it has us focus on the negative. Like when you’re reading through the comments on one of your KZbin videos and there's over a 1000 positive comments from viewers that should make you feel awesome that so many people like what you're doing. BUT when you see one negative comment from a hater saying you suck, you should quit and stop making videos or you should stop making music ect. Then it won’t matter that there was 1000 positive positive comments and just one negative comment because that’s all you will focus on and think about. We use more brain power to process negative comments, negative feedback and negative situations than we do positive ones and that's why we dwell on thvs bad and overlook the good. And the news media knows about human negative bias and our hardwired brains that focus on the bad over the good and that’s why the news is constantly, bad news. People can’t stop watching when there’s bad stuff happening in the world and the media uses it against us. That’s another thing the scientific studies talk about. How the media and politicians constantly tell us everything is bad, the world is falling apart, and this politician is the cause of all your pain and suffering yadda yadda. It's a messed up psychological game they play Because they know not everybody knows about negative bias and they can play with our emotions and manipulate us to do what they want.

I like the philosophical conversation particularly regarding the idea that some of the most talented and skilled are likely the most hypercritcal while simultaneously not being as afraid to share that part of themselves - something those not as talented or skilled may not be as capable of doing. I enjoy observing people (probably why I am drawn to various reaction channels) and will add that to my things to try to pay attention to.

I like how you invite him to show off at the start and he just plays something simple and sweet. I guess it looks very impressive from the outside (and it does take a lot of practice to get that precise and get the dynamics right and everything) but he could have gone haywire and it wouldn't have come across nearly as well.
