I was listening to this broadcast on 1280 WGBF AM radio in Evansville, Indiana an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinal radio network on a bakelite 1950s Zenith tube table radio. I was a big time Cardinal fan. This was just a few weeks before I turned 14. What a weekend! The pennant possibilities were really wild. I never missed Cardinal game and that weekend was no exception. I was hanging on every pitch. Really really an incredibly exciting series!!! This was when baseball was still baseball, baseball uniforms were made out of linen and flannel not plastic, and Harry was at the peak of his powers, Busch Bavarian Beer, and the Cardinals were still playing in old classic Sportsmans Park (Busch Stadium). Oh to see the old right field pavilion again! Miss those times a great deal.

This is sure a great find. Born in 1953 in St. Louis I remember being in our backyard throwing a ball against the porch steps with the transistor radio on loud. Cards came from way back to pass the Phillies, but then the Mets played the Cards very tough, and the Reds almost won the pennant. I sure remember that Friday night game preceding it when Al Jackon beat Bob Gibson 1-0. I relive these games playing baseball strat-o-matic as I have the 1964 Phillies, Reds, Cards, and the New York Yankees. If the Reds had won this day, there would have been a three way tie with the 3 teams. The Yankees also had a comeback versus the Sox and Orioles. My favorites baseball book is October 1964 by David Haberstam.

It's very sad that this broadcast misses the last two innings. What a day. I remember watching some of the Reds-Phillies on TV and I could hardly stand it it was so exciting. The whole weekend was unbelievable, starting with Gibson losing 1-0 to Al Jackson on Friday night.

I really liked Jack Buck as the Cards announcer; however, listening to this game brings back why I grew up being such a baseball fan in St. Louis. Harry Caray makes it so exciting.

As a Cubs fan who adores Harry Caray, I’m really enjoying listening to him in his prime and being able to call a winner, even though it’s for the Cardinals lol

The New York Mets were playing meaningful October baseball for the first time in their young history, albeit as spoilers. The Cardinals needed to win just one of three home games against the Mets to clinch the NL, and lost the first two. So it was all down to this game, and what happened with the Phillies in Cincinnati. Harry Carey really works the crowd in this game, through the magic of transistor radios and remote reports from Roy May at Crosley Field.

The NY Daily News' baseball writer,Dick Young, was in CINCY for that game.Afterwards he said:"That's the first time I've covered TWO losing dressing rooms."

I love the fans who have their radios on 1 is to listen to Harry Carey 2 is to hear the update on the Phills game so i would think there are over 20-25 thousand radios on in the park that's why i hear that whistle going through sometimes its the feedback from all the radios on

That was the game that eliminated the Phillies who were six games ahead--then lost ten in a row! Our California Lottery, by contrast, lost 59 jackpot drawings in a row since last June (if you follow our lottery drawings in Cali--lol)! The 1964 Mets were last under CaseyStengel by contrast.

Had the Mets won this game, the 1964 National League season would have ended in the three-way tie for first place.

The last two innings of this pennant-clinching game are missing. However, it is worth listening to hear Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray at his peak. Another real treat is the pre-game interview with Mets Manager Casey Stengel.

Too bad the recording is incomplete but interesting to hear Harry Carey as I remember him as a kid. No Jack Buck who was probably on NFL duty, and Harry mostly ignores sidekick Jerry Gross.

Are the last dramatic innings of this pennant-clinching game available somewhere, other than just the highlights on the commemorative album?

Why were the Reds and the Phillies off on that Saturday? Was Crosley Field needed for another event?
