Scottie has a new daily ride, the Suzuki Hayabusa GSX-1300R. Before he uses it as a run around Ian is going to carry out some maintenance and replace some parts as a small project.
This week Ian removes the wheels, brake discs and wheel bearings ready for powder coating and then starts the suspension fork rebuild but is halted by a massive problem!
Thanks you to Bikes, Trikes ‘N’ Stuff Peterborough for letting us use their tyre machine.

Funny about the front guard screw ..I have the same screw problem..even an impact driver wouldn't budge it ...still trying.😢

I would upgrade. Long term peace of mind. Otherwise pointless going through all the bother of messing with the forks. Really enjoy what your doing. Keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words Jerry 😎 I had a similar problem with my K1 GSX-R 1000 and upgraded them to the K3-4 front end with radial brakes.

A mate of mine at work (also called Ian weirdly) had his XJ stanchions re-chromed iirc it was a couple of hundred quid. You can get a pattern set from Brooks Barn for £250, so it's really a choice between re-chromed oem or pattern - the price is gonna be about the same. Second-hand is a gamble - could be as knackered as yours. I dread to think what new oem are gonna cost. Take it easy mate.

Hey Reggie, those are the same sort of prices I’ve seen, you are right second hand is always a game and a similar price to the others. I haven’t looked at oem but I imagine you are right

Well there is a few considerations i would think to this, first one is like someone else put Cost of each road to go down, i know you said its just a daily rider, but it doesnt really matter because safety comes first, so unless you know the second hand replacement set is A1, i wouldnt bother going down that avenue. and unless your racing or you realy need to up grade like you do a lot of 2 up riding or touring then just the standard set with new guides and seals and oil should be fine. lf it was me i would get pattern stanchions, just take your time unscrewing the old stanchions out fo the lower castings. heat is your friend to break free from the old thread locker they use. so i would just stick with the first plan, and keep the old forks and just restore them. and if you wanted to set them up right, i would get some ktech springs and either get a new nitron rear shock with a corrected spring for weight, or send the old shock off and get it rebuilt again with a new spring. properly serviced and set up standard suspension for the riders weight usually transforms the bike better than new, because its sprung right to the rider, and not for the masses. great channel by the way.

Thanks for the kind words Cbrblade 😎 I don’t think Scottie is too bothered about getting the suspension set up as the bike handled just fine for him. We’ll have to wait to see what he option he decides to do.

@@Classicmotorbikes cool mate, looking forward to it, if it was cost though, then cheapest thing and safest would be to just replace the stanchions, and fit new guides and seals, because your going to have to replace the guides and seals any way, no matter what avenue you go down, oh and if your going to get the wheels powdercoated, you could get the fork bottoms done after youve unscrewed them while you at the powdercoaters, it shouldnt cost that much extra. just a few ideas.

For the forks, are there any from higher spec (more specialised racing bikes) that some with a set of upgraded (adjustable) forks that will fit? If so then a second hand pair of those would be an idea, if they end up needing a rebuild then fair enough, that was going too be done anyway. As long as they are in a good rebuildable condition that is.

From what I’ve seen putting a newer front end with radial brake callipers is a popular mod for these older bikes. I’ll have to do some research into what needs to be changed to make them fit 👍

Hey Jay, good question! I think the costs will be fairly close from past experience, I’ll cost each one up so we can see the difference between the different options 👍

Oh dear. I would look at getting the chromed probably. A pattern part might no be as good.
@Classicmotorbikes
@Classicmotorbikes 3 жыл бұрын
Not what you want to find 😢 I was thinking the same thing, if it was a bike to be kept for a long time I think hard chroming would be the way to go, I’ve heard the chrome doesn’t always last the on pattern ones. The other thing to think about is I could get some pattern ones in under a week but there is a bit of a wait for getting them chromed.
