And what some people forget is the mk3 Mondeo “came out” in 2007, the X Type was on the vinegar strokes by then, best you can hope for us mk2 and more likely it was mk1. But do what? I don’t recall that car being a disaster and probably better than most modern day cars and better than what Jaguar would have made on their own. Look at it for what is is now, a car from 20+ years ago which is going to cost you some loose change (to buy at least).

Another big one to watch for is failure of the poor quality plastic Bosch clips that support the light bulbs in the headlights. I was quoted $4,000 (Canadian) from my Jaguar dealer, just for a new unit, and roughly another $1,000 for the labour. Second hand units seemed to be going for the neighbourhood of $2,000 and these would have the same poor clips, so no telling how long they would last. I eventually found a guy in Croatia who makes new and better quality clips for about $25. However, some garages won't touch the project because the weather seal has to be melted on the light housings and then remelted when finished. Not a big issue, except that much of the front of the car needs to be removed to do it, and if they get it wrong? Well, it all has to be disassembled and reassembled again at their cost. I found a good independent and he did the job, fixed up a terrible wiring bodge by a previous owner and a couple of other odds and ends and I got out of it for $4,300 less than Jaguar were planning to charge. I would have tackled it myself, but as mentioned in the video, I had the sill rot problem going on and couldn't lift the car at home. Anyway, I got all those issues sorted and the car looks and runs almost as new. I've had it as my daily driver for about 10 years, and have driven it on just about every kind of road and in every type of weather (including 4 trips across Canada) and it handled it all very comfortably.

Good report. I have had a few of these X Types but finally settled on the 2.1 petrol which is the most practical model to look after. If you work on your own cas as I do you will soon learn that has little to do with a Mondeo. Ford started that rumour because the Mondeo was a very suceessful car for them but it backfired. And people who don't know what they are taling about can be very distructive.

I owned a 2.5 V6 awd. It was a decent car it had rough running and it was the lazy previous owner not changing the spark plugs at the rear (as mentioned on here) despite telling me it had full service history. There are better built cars than a Jag but they have personality and drive fantastic. I’m currently on my 3rd Jag now having had the S-Type Sport and now a XF. Beats looking out the window at a dull German saloon

I really liked my 3.0 AWD Estate. It performed flawlessly until a series of electronic failures started happening. My local dealer wouldn't even look at it because of it's age. They could not get parts and no longer trained techs on 'old' models, like my 2005. Independent shops tried but couldn't fix it because the new circuit boards were not available and any used ones would be just as old. I was disappointed and still miss it. I hope it's new owner had better luck. On the other hand, there is nothing I can't get to keep my 1963 Morgan +4 on the road.

The headlights fixings broke where my biggest problem and failed due to the backup alarm being on the same circuit took long time to trace. I only kept it for one year. I strongly believe that the milage had been interfered with could not prove it, I wanted one so bad the heart overruled the gut, however this car broke my heart and put me off all Ford based jags I traded it for Rover 75 v6 and loved it😏😏👍👍

Now I’m not the one to say “Ford in a pretty frock” - I love the X-Type…but you know what I love more then an X-Type? A Jaguar with a bigger engine.

My daughter has a 2007 3.0 AWD here in Richmond, Texas (Houston area,…we are British ex-pats too lol), and it’s been a great commuter car. She has an hours drive each way and she finds it comfortable and quite nippy. Front wheel bearings needed doing and they are the press in type which can be tricky if they have been neglected. We took care of those. AC compressor just failed so had the AC system overhauled which is crucial in Texas. That has been the only expense. Only thing I would slightly disagree with is the quality of the interior, any plastic parts, seat shrouds, vent trim get VERY brittle especially in hot climates. And F.Y.I. Less than 20% of the car is shared with Ford parts.

One of the best things about these is how cheap you can get all that car for. Unfortunately one of the worst things about these is the same. Its great when you look at them and think you can get a car that rides well, has a nice interior, uses little fuel and goes well all for under a grand sometimes. However the first bill thats anything over about £500 will have you questioning if its worth it and if its over £1k you'd better be sure you're keeping it long term if you ever want to see any value from that. A good friend of mine got one (2.0D) a few years back and he was pleased as punch that he only paid £700 for it from an old boy who had given up on driving. One owner from new, garaged all its life, 65k miles and full main dealer history. It lasted until the MOT (around six months later) when he needed a bit of welding, new bushes, rear brakes due to pitting and part of the exhaust - total was around a £1200 bill. He was still ok with that and kept kidding himself he got a good one but it was only another few months and it started to develop a missfire from cold then a puff of smoke after idling and so on. First the garage said valve stem seals which he had replaced (£400) but the issues remained. Then they said it was probably glow plugs and he had them changed (£250). Then they said it was probably injectors which he had changed (£1350). That actually helped for a while but a few months later it began smoking and losing power which they said was the turbo. He had that replaced with (I think) a re-con one for £650. When he collected it it was still smoking and they fobbed him off with "its just whats left over in the exhuast". After a few days and a few hundred miles it was of course still doing it so back it went and they said it was the high pressure fuel pump and would cost him around £2000 with fitting. It was at that point the lightbulb went on and he sold it as it was for spares. The moral of the story is if its cheap enough and there are loads of them don't send good money after bad - just get rid and buy another. In fairness it was quite nice to drive.

I dunno, if I wanted a luxury-branded compact saloon built with a mass-market parts bin, I'd just get a Saab. In fact I have. And after being given an X-Type loaner car while my XKR was being repaired, I'm even more firm in my convictions. Apparently there's enough people in this comments section to keep at least some X-Types on the road, and good on them.

I had a 2.d Classic when new in 2005. Basis basic spec it was 19,990 quid so just fell within my company car scheme. I out in 60,000 miles in 18 months and it never missed a beat. It was a well made car and ticked every box except luxury and excitement. I moved on to an S-type 2.7D XS which had more luxury and was quick. teh X type is a great buy, forget the Mondeo jokes. I may buy another but at 15 years old, the youngest is not young and you have to be choosy. A late model XJ6 (X350) would be a better buy as also seriously depreciated, similair style but even more equipment especially if you find a Sovereign.

I had a 2.2 diesel auto. Whilst it was very comfortable, Avoid. It was a DPF equipped car, was always doing regens which brought oil changes down to 5,000 miles. It also ate tyres for fun, 10,000 from fronts on a good day, worst were some Goodyears which did a magnificent 6,000 miles. Once tyres were starting to wear tramlining and camber following were terrible so swap them around the axles regularly to ensure the ride remains acceptable. Tyre wear wasn't my driving as I'd had similar powered Audis and managed 25-30,000 easily. A colleague had a 2.0 diesel which kept giving glow plug error. Plugging in gave injection failure, despite taking to a so called diesel expert spending money on injectors the fault couldn't be cleared. In the end an autoeletrician found the problem, a flywheel too close to some cables causing a short. After spending hundreds the repair was £20.

Having owned a pre facelift 2008 2.5 petrol sovereign estate all i can say is that when they are not squeeking and rattling they are a very nice car. Problem is that by the time they had sorted out the issues with the facelifted version it was too late. Many sat instock for a long time, and had to be discounted to clear them. To sum up the X Type it was mutton dressed as lamb and gave you a hint of what a true Jaguar was like. I gave up trying to cure all the rattles with my sample anf traded it in for an XJ, what a difference. If you must have one, have it inspected first, rust is an issue with the early samples.

I'm sure it's functionally a reasonable car and for modest money. But to many of us, there's something a bit faux /imposter about the X type; like getting a shrunken cheaper Mercedes saloon based on a Vauxhall. (I agree Mondeo Mk3s are good cars, but it's too much of a step down from the genuine XJ luxo-barge..). I'm sure I'll get shouted down by all the fanboys who like cheap knock offs!

But thats what the s type was though, infact, the x type shares less than 19 percent with the mondeo, the s type was 40 percent with its lincoln/ford counterpart, again, if we talking the awd drive models, with their rear wheel power bias, there to me every bit jag as the xj350 from that same era (which in the case of the 3 liter v6, it's the same engine in both x type and xj, it's also a Porsche design with input from cosworth and eventually jaguar with the variable valve timing) so sorry, gotta disagree!

I had a 2.5 litre x-type and it was the worst car I ever had after the basket cases of my early days. The sills let water in, which sloshed about on braking or accelerating. The instrument binnacle developed a clicking sound that required its replacement. There were other issues that I cannot now remember in detail. Perhaps it improved in later iterations, but mine was awful. And I decided that the XJ style front end just didn't work in shrunken form. My current XK 5.0 is another matter altogether.

The surreptitious rusting behind the sill panels is what would put me off one of these, given their age now. I've seen some horrendous videos on KZbin showing what can happen on the S-Type, X-Type and even the Mk1 XF. After years of reducing mud traps within the bodywork manufacturers, for some strange reason, have since taken to fitting composite non-structural cladding as lower body panels. As well as trapping mud and accelerating structural rust, they also disguise it!
