A big part of my current natural hair regimen is all about preserving my heat stretch and keeping my scalp clean and my hair moisturized for an extended period of time. It’s a balancing act that’s all about technique. But, please don’t feel pressure to copy this regimen verbdom. At the very least I hope there are a few things you learn that you can use to upgrade your current regimen, if needed. In PART 2 (posting next week Thursday), a lot of your questions will be answered.

justin miller no she’s not smart with words, otherwise she wouldn’t have said African Americans produce a type of sebum. No such thing as African American hair, it’s type 4 hair perculiar to Africans and perhaps others of mixed races. Africans became Americans due to history and it’s a shame that it has suddenly become a badge of honour.

I'm happy to see you and here regardless. I watch a lot of videos on Japan and expats living in Japan. I hear lots of stories that Japanese people randomly touch black peoples hair without permission, out of curiosity not out of malice. Maybe if more of them were like you and watched videos like this they could educate themselves without being so intrusive. 😉

This is the best natural hair and skin channel I’ve ever come across. You’re so intelligent and give such detailed facts. I’ve found this channel over a month ago and IMMEDIATELY unsubscribed from 75% of other KZbinrs 😂 Your hair typing system is SOOO ACCURATE because for months I couldn’t exactly pinpoint if my hair was 4b or 4c- it wasn’t tight enough to be considered 4c and it didn’t even seem as loose as those who said they had 4b hair. Your videos have taught me a lot. And your videos are done so well- they remind me of the PowerPoints I’d see in a university lecture 👍🏾 Thank you so much for taking time to educate us !

I don’t think she’s advising anyone not to cleans their scalp, she’s only sharing what she does to keep her hair stretched for the month. To each it’s own with this routine. I workout daily so I know i have to cleanse my scalp weekly. I still think it’s good information to know about the sebum and the terms she uses to scoop and spread the sebum through out the hair and that it’s possible to not need as much products to keep my hair moisturized I never knew about that, that’s why I think it’s great information. I’m open to trying it this method but because i want to eliminate the use of a lot of products. I workout regularly, and I know that not cleaning my scalp for a month probably wouldn’t work. Thanks green beauty for your videos they are an excellent resource.

Wow! I’ve been doing the same thing for 3/4 months. Just on intuition. Used to do this years ago while I was in the bathtub. The warm water loosens the sebum and it glides easier down the strands. Now I use water and aloe juice warmed up in a spray bottle. When I need oil I use a castor/jojoba blend which is also warmed. I have less tangled and softer hair that breaks less and is glossy. I massage with my pads of my fingers and spread it. My fingers and nails benefit too, stronger and smoother. Love your channel and your products 💕

I stopped washing, conditioning, and using products with chemicals in my hair a year ago (occasionally use oils), as an experiment to see if my hair would thrive better. I have noticed a major difference and have gained hair growth, w/less breakage, and my scalp is not itchy or dry anymore, but oily from my natural sebum! Water-washing in the shower daily must be causing my sebum to spread. I seriously love your videos!

That's the beauty of her channel. She doesn't really push you in one direction per se--just gives you facts and some opinions on routines and practices that keep coming up. It's all up to you on how you'd use the information. Sure she has her own preferred routine, and yes she shares it--but she tells us time and time again that her experience is different from our own and reminds us to be the judge. Personally, my life and body and hair routine often changes. But ultimately, I just listen to my hair and scalp. Scratch, sniff, check my nail, and take the best step. From time to time I'll look KZbin to see what's new in the hair world, or to trying something different, but it's on me and I'm to know that there woman are informative as GreenBeauty here.

A lot of people in this thread are grossed out by the thought of not washing their hair and it’s weird. The way our hair is set up you could simply go years without washing your hair, it’s still practiced to this day in many countries and their scalps aren’t flaky, itchy, and gross with build up. Y’all just use too many products in your hair lol. Not referring to those who actually have dandruff from a skin condition. But I’ve personally witnessed this from experience. I used to have to scratch giant patches of dandruff from my hair when I was younger, washing my hair every week, using all these different products with all these foreign ingredients because they smelled good and someone on the internet said it was the bomb... It was a mess. Then I cut my hair and just went full blown lazy 😂. I go weeks without washing my hair, don’t put any heat on it. The most I do to style it if I’m not wearing it out is buns, a puff, or two braids. I only use pure natural products, the kind you gotta melt down before using, and I don’t personally massage or oil my scalp and my hair does perfectly on its own. Even after I have my hair in braids or another protective style in for months I don’t get that nasty build up at the roots (Yes I do still wash it anyway). And I’ve been told on many different occasions that my hair always smells good. My point is, it’s not gross to not wash our hair at all. Let your hair do what it was made to do and you’ll be just fine. If you choose to wash your hair regularly and do whatever it is that you do, that’s also fine! But don’t sit here and act like it’s disgusting to go a longer period of time without washing your hair. You sound ignorant. Like people who think co-washes are disgusting because you’re not using shampoo.

I understand this is a method for people who have sensitive skin and allergies. I cannot use this method. I went years without washing or cowashing my hair regularly due to my ignorance about type 4 hair. Now that i cowash and shampoo regularly I'm in and out of the shower within 20 minutes, compared to the hours or days that it used to take detangling and washing my hair. I'm never going back to that. I'd rather cowash my hair daily for 20 minutes a day vs spending hours on my hair once or twice a month. At the end of th day its about doing whats best for your own head of hair. Your hair is luscious and beautiful, so clearly, what you're doing is working for you.

I think I may have done this technique years ago when I use to wear braided extentions for months. I barely used any products and did not wash often so my sebum was doing all the heavy lifting. These days I admit to being in love with the suds, but I think this technique would be perfect for wearing long-term protective styles especially my mini twist which tend to mat and loc if water touches them. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing more of your techniques. The more tools, skills and knowledge we have for caring for our natural hair the better.

This really works. I'm in the 4th week of trying this method, and I can't believe it but my scalp isn't itchy. My hair looks nice and I don't have to dry it out frequently with shampoo anymore. Thanks a lot. EDIT: Just a note that of course, this method is not for everyone. It works for me because my scalp is always dry. If I don't put oil on it, it just stays dry, and of course usiing shampoo actually makes it drier, which caused itching previously. So I think with fine type 4 hair and a dry scalp, this will be a lifesaver. If you have an oily scalp, then maybe not, you'd need the shampoo.

I do this!! But this method is useless to me without the help of my hair being drenched in water.. My sebum is stubborn!! I wash after a while though because my hair can get over-coated and it turns white. When I do wash I use Castile soap because it doesn’t strip my hair at all, just gets rid of the excess oil, sebum and leaves a nice amount. Using this method has helped me learn my hair. So much so, that no one else can tell me more about my hair than I can.

I have to wash my hair once a week atleast I cant do the whole going a month thing. For my head that would make my hair and scalp disgusting I dont like the smell of sebum and my scalp produces alot of it so I need regular weekly cleanses. Plus I just feel raunchy not regularly cleansing my hair I treat my hair and scalp like the rest of my skin because the scalp is skin. But it seems to work for some so to eaches own. My scalp thrives from regular cleansing every few days because it keeps my follicles clear if your someone who gets itchy irritated scalp and you dont wash your hair that often than that practice might not be for you because its most likely your scalp trying to tell you it needs to be cleansed so it can breath thats why alot of times after you cleanse your scalp the itchy and irritation goes away so listen to your body and do what works for you.

That's my issue too! I will straight up stop everything, and quick wash my hair even with only 30 minutes left before work or meeting someone if I can smell my hair. No one else ever notices it, but because I'm stuck with my head all day, I easily pick up on that "it's wash day time" scent. The same as stale toothpaste breath. I've had to hold off going to the restroom, just to re-brush first- doing a full on pee dance while brushing behind my molars. But yeah, washing is generally once a wk for me.

Hey I think this is guinness idea. I thought about it. Sebum, at least my own is very thick. I read online that oil breaks down oil and dirt. For example, the oil cleansing method is a great alternative to washing your face and you can use oil to remove your makeup. So I was thinking that what if we not only use oil to break down sebum, but to also clean our hair. I'm going to try it. My plan is that instead of doing an oil pre-poo where you only leave the oil on your hair for a couple of hours, I'll leave the oil on my hair for 24 hrs or more, then hop in the shower, rinse it off and then condition and deep condition as usual. Sounds exciting. I love experimenting with my natural hair. Let me know what u think, and I'll tell u how it goes.

I would be concerned about products build-up... The oil, conditioners, and leave-in leave residuals on your hair (even if you rinse it really well) and I guess it can be OK for a few weeks and you might even experience very soft easy/easy to manage hair and then, it will be too much and your hair will act crazy (dry, brittle, unruly)... This "prediction" is made of what I've read/seen on KZbin, personal experience about products build-up and "alternative ways" to wash your hair, but if you still feel like experimenting, have fun, it's your hair after all :) !

Nope, pillows are clean. The hair absorbs the oil. I don't use any products after washing with coconut oil, I just spread the sebum and do HOT water only rinses. And oil wash again when it's time to. Key for me to have clean hair is to use HOT water and scrub scalp gently with finger nails when oil washing. My hair is nearly tail bone length.

Facts on facts about Sebum. It’s the best hair product and it’s free.99!!!! It’s a natural humectant. I brush with a boar brush all the time when I straighten my hair. I clean the brush and have many is circulation so I always have a clean one to work with while the others are drying from a wash. My hair is less dry. Thick and heavy with just..healthy hair. When I wear my hair natural my curls are waaaaaayyy better. Straightening my hair and using my natural oils with a brush is my protective hair style in winter. The more sebum the more projected each follicle is from the harsh winters. I also wear a silk cap that doubles as a beanie 🤫. My hair doesn’t smell at all!!

I wash my daughter's 4c hair once a month. It's long, but really thick and tangles. Like mine, it's hard to maintain without using heat to smooth it out (part of why I grew locs). I find washing her hair only once a month, and using a small amount of coconut oil and twisting like her works to keep from ruining her hair with heat and over manipulation. I usually braid the twists down in to french braids. I brush her twists out and retwist every week to keep it looking neat. I no long threaten to loc or slap on the creamy crack just to make life easier.

@@user-um7tw6kx4r6 Exactly! People saying they have to shampoo often don't get that the frequent shampooing is the problem. I don't care if it is natural, organic, cold pressed, extra virgin, sulfate free shampoo.😂 The "natural" ones just switch one detergent for another but it's all detergent. It's like saying you're going to stop using Tide to wash your hair and start using 7th Generation instead because it's milder but they're both DETERGENT. If you must use it why not do so as infrequently as possible. Speaking of detergent, I heard the CEO of one these Jean companies (may be Levi's) said he only washes his jeans a few times a year because the washing (using detergent) process breaks down the material and he wants to preserve the jeans. Just something to think about when it comes to washing hair less. Ayurvedic herbs are a great alternative to shampoo.

I'm sure this method does wonders for our hair, but in my humble opinion I do think simply oiling your scalp/hair with a quality oil will produce similar results. So many methods are so time consuming. And while the care of our hair is just as important as anyone else's it certainly isn't the MOST important thing in my life. This IS much less expensive than using fancy products but truthfully you do end up 'paying' with your time and even alil bit of beauty. I don't think I could wear my hair in that style and not feel self conscious😬...maybe under a hat or cute head wrap tho💁
