A truck driver with 30-40 years of experience saying he doesn’t want to drive a diesel anymore is the ultimate endorsement. That plus the 25-30% fuel savings is all I need to know. Tesla will dominate the market as soon as they can ramp production.

Around 4:15. You speak as if infrastructure is an upfront cost for BEV Semis. I think you mean the power stations, transformers, etc. However, you have upfront cost with infrastructure with diesel trucks as well. Dig holes and install underground diesel storage tanks. Install pump stations. Also, on-site maintenance of diesel trucks is common. I imagine, perhaps, no on-site maintenance garage is needed with BEV semis. We should talk apples to apples.

I am very excited about the Tesla Semi entering the highways. It is quiet and nonpolluting, yes, but even more important to me as a driver or passenger on the road, it is likely to be far safer both for truckers and for other vehicles, especially in bad weather conditions. The power to drive normally; regenerative braking to slow reliably and safely; software-defined to warn and/or reduce jack-knifing and tipping, monitor tire air pressure and wheel condition, etc.; there is a great deal to look forward to here. School and city or long-haul buses, even passenger trains, are becoming EVs as well. The high torque of electric motors makes EV's especially good as garbage and maybe concrete trucks.

EV pick ups being good for long distances is especally true now that Ford and Rivian and GM are part of the Tesla charging network. A gallon of diesel will get you about as far as 10 kWh of battery. So a 900 kwh tesla semi is like having 90 gallons of diesel, hence the 500 mile range. A big cargo ship holds 2.5-3.5 million gallons of fuel. That means a ship would need a 25 million kWh battery. That would weigh 138,000 tons and cost $2.5 billion. A ship like the Ever Given, that blocked the Suez Canal is 99,000 tons. With cargo, it is 220,000 tons and costs around $150 million new. The math doesn’t work. An electric car needs to run for 3.5 hours at freeway speeds on a battery charge. The Tesla semi can run for 7.7 hours at freeway speeds. A cargo ship needs to run for 25 days at cruising speed on a single fuel load. Imagine a Tesla semi that could drive for 25 days without recharging. It would need a 67,000 kWh battery and it would weigh 743,000 lbs, which isn’t doable. Likewise, a diesel truck traveling at 65 mph for 25 days straight at 6 mpg, would need 6,500 gallons of fuel, which weighs 39,000 lbs. Again, it is all about the math. The huge weight discrepancy between batteries and flammable fuel is because the electrical bonds sticking an electron onto a metal atom is a tiny fraction of the amount of energy stored in the covalent bonds that holds two atoms together. Nuclear bonds >>> covalent bonds >> electrical bonds. That is why a Gerald R Ford class aircraft carrier can run for 15 years on 700 lbs of uranium. That example goes back to physics, chemistry and math. 😂

Can we be honest here? The ONLY companies buying the Tesla Semi have a huge DEI department where vanity projects like "going electric" show how much "better" they are over your run-of-the-mill large corporation. Ryder and ATA both have studied electric trucks and both come to the conclusion that going electric is 2X as expensive as going diesel. Ryder who owns and leases 47,000 18-wheeler rigs has no plans to buy and lease Tesla Semis and that kills the market for the Tesla Semi and ATA dismisses electric trucks too Sure, large corporations that still have a DEI department that hasn't been disbanded will still go for these vanity projects...

Thats not honesty… if you look at it through an unbiased opinion that would be honest. You said they looked at “electric trucks”. There is a vast difference between the tesla semi and the competition electric truck; if in fact they looked at the the tesla semi as well and then came to that conclusion, that would be fine. However, if they looked at other not well designed pickups then they are not doing their due diligence and rushing to judgement (as you seem to be). This may or may not work for everyone, but to take a hard-nosed stance one way or another is just foolish especially if you will be left behind by the competition by doing so. Grouping electric trucks into one category isnt honesty… that is like saying the nissan leaf isn’t sufficient for my needs, therefore no EV is sufficient enough… vast differences between the leaf and model 3 long range.
