I just use more shock. (Tri chlor) lowers ph and raises cyan (not by much about 5ppm per lb) Stuff is perfect for green pools. I dissolve it in a bucket before applying.

When you are waiting the 8+ hours to let it do the work, are you running it on recirculate or is it completely off?
@SwimUniversity8 ай бұрын
Off. The instructions on the floc bottle should say the same thing.
@JMckenzie-p5m8 ай бұрын
Sand filter? Turn to the Recirculate when you add flock so that it won’t clump the algea to the sand! Run on recirculate for 2 hours, then turn the pump off! Be patient! 12 to 24 hours! Then vacuum! Refill pool and leave pump off if it’s still cloudy. The Flock should drop some more algae. Vacuum again if you see Dead algae on the bottom! It’s a headache, but if your pool is swampy just be patient! Here’s a secret most pool supply stores WONT tell you: buy a bottle of FILTER MAGIC! Do what it says to do! It’s easy and will save you money ! It does clean the sand!! Other wise you’ll spew swampy algae back in your pool when you turn you filter on! You got this!💪

Do we keep the pump on recirculate while letting sit for 8 hours or turn off pump?
@bears3585 ай бұрын
I've had an algae issue and am just needing to clear dead algae out of my pool. I'm hesitant to vacuum to waste because I'm just not very good at it and it will waste a lot of water. Also, my vacuum is very small and my pool quite large. I have a glass filter media and have added some clarifier to help get the dead algae to clump together (not floc though). So, my question, shouldn't simply running the pump 24/7 be able to clear up the water? Or is it required that I vacuum to waste? Thanks!

You don't want flocculant in the filter, got that. As an alternative to using the waste setting on the pump can you use a pool cleaning robot with a fine filter?
@SwimUniversity8 ай бұрын
The issue with the robot is it will kick up the floc and you'll have to start over.

For excellent, fast results I recommend Leslie’s Perfect Weekly. It’s added to the skimmer once a week. It lowers phosphate levels. Algae feeds off of phosphates, so if you lower phosphate levels you get rid of algae. Your pool will look like the Caribbean. Other pool companies also sell phosphate lowering products too but I have only tried Leslie Pool “Perfect Weekly”. It will save you a lot of work and money. It will prevent the use of more harsh chemicals and frustrating vacuuming.

Phosophate remover can work, but only if you're on top of maintaining the rest of the pool (brushing, skimming, balancing water, etc.)

This video was so helpful. One huge question now. The pool is crystal clear about 5 days later i have been battling getting the ph in check, i have it at 7.8 (the alkalinity is in range) and my total chlorine is 0. Your one video says to triple shock it to fix chlorine demand BUT is this actually a chlorine demand problem or the fact that when i vacuumed to waste and lost so much water that it could be the reason it is so low? Not sure if i should triple shock it or go another route? I added two bags of cal hypo the free chlorine went up to 3 ppm a couple hours later but the next morning it was back at 0. Not sure what to do. Thanks again for all your helpful videos

How's your CYA levels looking? And what type of chlorine do you normally use to sanitize?
@marinohogan11108 ай бұрын
@@SwimUniversity CYA last night was between 30 and 50. We super shocked it last night added 1 lb of cal hypo per 10k gallons (30k gallon pool) retested this morning 12 hours later the free chlorine was between 2 and 3. Now i just tested again and free chlorine is showing 0 again. We were using liquid chlorine from local pool store for months , all the numbers were tested and we adjusted however it was needed throughout that time but battled a terribly green pool during it. The first time the pool has been clear since we bought the house in October was after we followed the guide in this video. Have absolutely no idea what to do at this point
@charlierose17088 ай бұрын
You could have a phosphate issue which is a good source for algae and tends to chew thru chlorine quickly as it tries to bloom, also you're not shocking that size pool with 3lbs of shock or 3 gallons of chlorine your gonna need like 12-15 gallons of liquid chlorine that will oxidize and sanitize whatever organic matter in the water that is burning thru the chlorine and leaves you with enough of a base chlorine level to maintain with chlorine tabs. Stay away from cal-hypo shock too it's dirty and adds calcium to the water which cannot be removed unless you drain the pool, calcium hard ess is one of the main indicators the pool needs to be drained. I know that 12 gallons of liquid chlorine seems like a lot but 1 gallon gives you 1ppm of chlorine per 10,000 gallons so your size pool of 30,000 gallons yould need 9 gallons to reach the minimum level of 3ppm for chlorine.

If I have a cartridge filter with no recirculate option, can I just take the cartridge out and run it with no cartridge in the filter to recirculate? I can vac to waste, just not recirculate
@SwimUniversity7 ай бұрын
You should be fine without recirculate. It's ideal but not 100% necessary. You could brush the water around a bit instead. You definitely need a waste setting.

This is great advice for people who have a chlorine pool put cal-hypo wreaks havoc on salt-chlorine generators. If you have a saline (salt) pool, ALWAYS use dichlor shock. My favorite dichlor shock is Clorox brand, the regular "Shock Plus", NOT "extraBLUE".
@SwimUniversity7 ай бұрын
Yes, great tip. Dichlor or liquid chlorine for salt water pools. Or stay on top of cleaning your salt cell if you use cal hypo shock.

Thank you so much!! We Shocked and flocked and vacuumed up a ton of mustard algae off of the bottom of the pool. The pool is still greenish and cloudy though. We let it sit again overnight and vacuumed this morning. Wondering if we should floc again? Or what else to do…Free chlorine is very high and ph is very low.

Try bringing your pH up. The free chlorine needs that to be in range for it to work properly

@charlierose17088 ай бұрын
Horrible advice, flocculent can only be used on multiport sand filters because they can bypass the filter. Flocculent will ruin sand, cartridge and DE filters, you're better off treating it with liquid chlorine, phosphate remover (if the phosphate levels are higher than 200ppb) and polyquat algaecide that kills algae independent of chlorine. Most pool owners don't own a portavac system so flocculent is the worst thing you could recommend. I never use flocculent and still get green to cleans turned around in a day, if money isn't an option to the customer I can usually get it cloudy blue before I leave and clears up in a run cycle.
@SwimUniversity8 ай бұрын
We mention that at the 02:25 mark about this method! We have a video on just using shock if you don't have a multiport valve on your filter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4icmKOci9l3ntU
