That reminded me of an allegory I heard many times in scout camps. For some reason neither heaven nor hell had short spoons, and the people in hell starved because they kept spilling the soup on themselves, but the people in heaven were smart and fed each other. I always thought that was a silly allegory, you could just hold the spoon closer to the bowl part. It would be more stable that way too.

I have one and I like it because I don’t get orange peel stuck under my nails. I use the curved part to help pull the peel off after slicing vertically (parallel to the segments). You bring up such a good point. Some of the gadgets aren’t easier than the conventional way for most users, but they allow other people to do something they would otherwise need help with, or it enables them to do the job safer, easier, or faster.
@Tunanunaa
@Tunanunaa 2 жыл бұрын
While the orange one may seem useless to us, I think it’s important to keep in mind that a large target audience for gadgets like these is the elderly and people with disabilities. There are people who may struggle to peel oranges due to weakness or limited mobility in their hands, and something like the orange ring could be a good fix to that. Plus you can take it with you, unlike a knife in most situations

Wait what??!?!?! I thought gadgets were only meant to speed things up and make tasks easier. Never heard anywhere where they're introduced as "this device is for the elderly and disabled people!!!". I heard only a few of them marketing themselves for kids who can't use their hands skillfully or carefully yet like the "onigiri-maker" in Japan but never for the ones you claimed.
@TheShiningDiamond
@TheShiningDiamond Жыл бұрын
@@tobe3940 most easy to use gadgets ARE for that demographic, but if the market only focused towards them they wouldn't be enough to sustain that business. By marketing as a quick and easy to use tool all around you avoid the stigma and price jump of making disabled gadgets a scarcity. So buy that gadget! Its fun and helps normalize having that kind of stuff around :)

That fry cutter is actually the same style most restaurant/fry trucks use. That model was probably designed for home use and has been dulled due to lots of use/time, it's also typically put vertically on a wall so you pull it down like a lever rather than back so gravity can assist then the potatoes fall into a bucket underneath. Just a fun fact lol!

Ive had one for yrs. It must be silicone. Definitely works great in the microwave, especially for steaming frozen veggies, covering pans, & then storing the food afterwards without finding/fussing with a lid! I think Charles Viancin is the brand I have & it’s pretty- looks like a flower. The center has a heavier silicone molded shape which ensures the lid is weighted down appropriately 👍🏻

Me neither. It looked like there were some tiny spots open, that's why I thought it can't be sealed. Also another thing to consider though, silicon seems to change over a short time so I wonder for how long it'd do its job well.

I used to Hull my strawberries by pushing a simple straw up the inside, through the middle so as it emerged out of the top, It took all the stalk and leaves cleanly, plus any creepy crawlies that might have hung on for grim death as I washed them; I can't do it anymore because Multiple Sclerosis has robbed me of the use of most of my left side, including my hand and it's definitely a 2 handed skill I swear it really does wh work, though.and, you don't lose almost the whole top half of your strawberry like you do when you lop the whole top off with a knife; plus, it's quite impressive to do in front of other people, 'cos you wind up with cylinder of strawberry and a verticle tunnel through your fruit!

The orange peeler isn't necessarily meant to let you peel an orange more quickly, but to let you do it more easily; they're two different things. I've always had a problem with biting my nails, and therefore find it very difficult to peel oranges completely by hand, such as if I take one to work with me. This peeler would come in very hand then, since I can't carry a knife around with me for peeling oranges. Same applies for children who obviously shouldn't be given sharp knives as a general rule, and also maybe people who have disabilities that affect things like motor control, making the peeler a much safer and hassle-free option, even if it might take a little bit longer. It's usually a matter of perspective when you're looking at whether something is useful or not; what seems unnecessary or like a hindrance to you may actually be incredibly helpful to someone else.

Ive had one of those floppy lid for yrs. It must be silicone to hold up to heat and be the most utilitarian. Definitely works great in the microwave, especially for steaming frozen veggies, covering pans, & then storing the food afterwards without finding/fussing with a lid! I think Charles Viancin is the brand I have & it’s pretty- looks like a flower. The center has a heavier silicone molded shape which ensures the lid is weighted down appropriately 👍🏻

my family has an orange peeler like that, it's made to look like a snail. i find it really helpful personally, as i struggle peeling fruit with just my fingers because of the feeling on my skin. it also makes me really happy when i can take the peel off in two pieces instead of a thousand. :)) i think this gadget is rather for people who just can't peel oranges well, rather than people who only wanna be faster. also we have a fork like that and i always thought its a fun gadget rather than something that's supposed to be actually helpful lol

Omg the extended fork! When my son was younger, 9 or 10, he was so excited when he saw it in the store so of course I got it for him. He loved randomly pulling it out of the drawer and surprising people with it. So I’d definitely give it a thumbs up and it was so worth his fun. By the way, he’s 25 and we still have it and whenever he sees it in the drawer he still laughs.

We had one of these at home, too, but is was more like a pen, not like a ring to put on your finger. I think it's great if you have small children and want to teach them how to peel an orange without having to hand them an actual knife. On the tip there is a shape like a triangle that points down. It's just sharp enough to peel the orange, so you're not likely to get hurt using it.

We do have a better version of that french fry maker at home. It's more refined and doesn't get stuck as easily, it also fits bigger potatoes. It's a good gadget and definitely makes making fries easier

The potato cutter might be in need of some oiling to work more smoothly.

My grandma had a potato chip maker, and when it's not rusty and full from a garage sale it's pretty OK. Also, if you lightly boil the potatoes first (as I would with some types of potatoes, but definitely not all) it's actually rather smooth work :)

oh wow, I have never discovered a video that early. I am stunned by the circle cutter, didn't expect it to work this well at all! Downside: takes up much more space than a classic metal cutter. But if you do a lot of baking where you need circles and don't care about them not being perfectly round.. I say CLEVAH!

The thing with the fork is that is useful for a lot of folks with disabilities that are perhaps strapped in a wheelchair and can't get close to the table or bend their waist to get closer. A lot of gadgets are not made for able bodied people in mind but are for disabled folks.
