Sure they might bump it up or down and use new instruments but nothing has been truly new in centuries. I will agree that the deluge of modern music has gotten lazy and is not changing things up as much. Just recycle old stuff and embellish it with modern techniques. At last old metal and rock tried to spice it up and make it sound different. Not many doing that today.

My favorite part about most modern metal is that not only does it all "sound the same," it all actually SOUNDS THE SAME because of digital recording and everything being quantized and squared off and bass boosted and whatever else. I say "all," but there's always exceptions of course. Just so much of it sounds like machines, it's unbearable.
