Don Rickles was not only funny but he really loved his friends. He became close to Bob Saget and John Stamos later in life and it was not uncommon to see Don and John together at various events. And while he could make a joke out of anything and give anyone the business, he always made sure that he expressed his love and friendship for them. And when Jimmy Kimmel talked about him on the day of his death, you could see and hear just how much love he had for Don. Having grown up with him, I will always miss his humor.

IF, IF you DID NOT get roasted by the legend of comedian Don Rickles, there's a good chance you're a no-talent nobody and should be "worried" about your career. They only brought Don out to roast the best of the best, the finest actors and comedians and talents, those who truly had "made it" to the pinnacle of their careers. ALL knew that Rickles was ruthless w/o bias- he roasted and crushed ALL with equal opportunity - religion, looks, color, sex, marriage or divorce, etc. AND, often made fun of his own "Jewishness" and laughed at his own humble beginnings, etc. And Donny ALWAYS ended by giving the person he just tore to shreds, a wish of love and thanks and health and happiness, and he truly meant it. Don considered it the highest honor to be allowed to roast these people- he credits many of them with giving him the breaks in his career that allowed him to obtain his own success. IF, IF Rickles didn't roast you - you probably weren't worth the time. These kinds of "roasts", started by legend Dean Martin on his own TV show, and the "rat pack" crew, they are what true, clean, good comedy is about. No politically correct bullshit, no "oops, I hurt someone's feelings" and all the crap we deal with today. The finest in their business- they'd all get together, they'd all rip and pillage each other and roll on the floor laughing, then end the night by tipping a glass to each other, giving everyone a hug, telling them I'll be at your kid's next birthday party or "see you next month at that dinner party at my house" - as they all loved and respected each other equally. This was class, true class- something we really don't have anymore. Sad. Many comics won't even "do comedy" any longer- they're just sick of the PC-crowd BS and "hurt feelings" and walking on pins and needles as to "who might get offended", in a nation BUILT ON YOUR RIGHT TO "OFFEND" ANYONE, and that's what the beauty of a roast really was. Free people, freely mocking each other and all the stupid stereo types of skin color and religion and "ethnic" background- and then giving a big love hug at the end and celebrating their shared successes and respect for each other's talents and careers. It's a bygone era folks, so treasure these wonderful video clips, this is true gold of a time that no longer exists :(

Clint Eastwood had immense respect for Don Rickles. He contributed a good portion to his Mr. Warmth documentary, which won an Emmy. Even Clark Gable had a load of respect for Rickles, and he would visit Don's mother and pay his courtesy towards her son. I learned this from an article I read.

Always wanted to ask Clint about Kelly's Heroes and something he said about that film many years ago now. He once said he'd wished they had more time to edit the movie and if they had, it "would've been a classic." He did know him. Idk how well he knew him but I just knew that Rickles played at the Trump Taj Mahal and maybe some other Trump stuff. Trump had respect for him, but he tried to sell him a rip off deal in one of his apartments. So after a while, Rickles threw a dollar on the floor and said "Leave me alone".
