Great detail ~ push the his ribs with your foot to open up space. If you can't get that locked up you're going to lose it....nvm... He's showing how you'll lose it right now.. You're a legend Brian.

Wait! You mean to tell me there's a heel hook entry other than an Imanari Roll? The heresy! Lol!

I’m just now learning leg locks so sorry if this is a dumb question. How is this not reaping the knee when he gets his other leg out and does what appears to be a triangle lock on the leg? I thought if you cross your leg across the opponents leg it’s a disqualification for reaping the knee.

This is the tournament version. You use it on your opponent and apply it slowly till he/she/it/they/them/itself/etc taps. You use it when you don't really want to hurt the other person. If you want to hurt the other person, that's a different strategy. After you get your suplex, dive in for the hook. Can be as sloppy as you want. Maybe try to put your weight on the opposite leg you are heel hooking. Whip that thing as hard as you can, stop when you hear the crunching and pop up before his buddies try to stomp you.

Coach, I have a question unsolved for years about the heel hook, maybe you can answer it to me. I learned it way back in the 90's, so it was a really basic, "luta livre" version of it, and not anything close to the level of intricacies we get in the modern leg lock game. Anyways, one of the tips my original instructor gave me, and that I still use to this day, is to instead of clamping the heel with the usual "chest and arms" grip, I simply use my opposite hand to grab the hell, on the palm of my hand really, and cranck it while keep my body stationary and the toes of the foot being attacked under my arm pit. I find it to work realky well for me, and the number of escapes I allow using this method are fewer than when I try to do the traditional grabbing of the heel. I never see any high level guys using this method, so I'm probably in the wrong here, but I really would like to understand why it is not a preferred method of cranking on the heel. Is it because for most people ut leads to more escapes? It has not been my experience, so I really don't know why more people don't simply grab the heel and pull it. It's reaaaally fast and easy to do. Once again thanks for the amazing content you give us for free. Kind regards from Brazil.

I mean, even that fricking Minotaur sculpture from 2000 BC or something shows the heel being secured using the chest and arms grip... If even the ancient Greeks used it that way I may be the one that is screwing it up :-/

Exactly. Why don't more people use this variation? I mean, I'm not talking about the ashi garami part here. This is in my opinion the biggest evolution in the leg lock game of the last 10 years - the way you secure the position first by using your own legs. I'm talking about why not go for broke and rip the heel ultra fast by using your palm. It's a very secure grip, we're monkeys after all, we're really good at grabing things with yoir hands. To me the setup using the chest and arms grip is just slower and not more secure at the end of the day.

Is your bent ankle enough to prevent him from applying an ankle lock to you, or is it that a heel-hook beats an ankle lock going "head-to-head"? Thanks.

Well, Danaher doesn't teach ankle locks because he says it's just a pain sub, and world champions won't ever tap to that. His favourite is the inside heel hook because it does the most debilitating breaking damage. Outside heel hook also good, but not quite as debilitating.

I personally am not a fan of the straight ankle lock, outside heel hook, or toe holds for finishing- in my opinion they're all forms of control leading to the inside heel hook. It's all important to know and understand though.
