He didn't need to follow that up with "And when you think about 'you', you become selfish," or "Then you're not thinking about the team or our goals." He left that for them to fill in the blanks and it seemed to really register. These are the reasons people talk about how you can learn life lessons through sports. Everything he told his team in this clip, could be easily translated to business or personal relationships. Great motivation and communication.

Coach K said, “Be as tough as your mother”…..He understood the value of a mother. That is not to devalue the father (especially since he raised two daughters as a father) but the value of a mother is often under appreciated. He wanted the players to know that if you want to succeed, you have to know what a mother brings to the table that often isn’t recognized and bring that toughness when you play basketball.
