COACH D! This is my first time ever coaching flag football . I’ve been watching all your videos and the meet and greet/ first practice went very well ! The first game is Sunday and i have no idea how many plays to run during the game .. we briefly went over 1 play last week and i have no clue how we’re going to get more than 1 or 2 plays down in a hour before the game ! I can’t see it being a good idea to keep running the same thing over and over !( these kids are 5&6 years old ) please help coach🏈😁

I’ve got your back! I give you all the practice schedules and exact plays to run for that age group. You’d be surprised how many they can pick up. The secret at that age is to use the same formation for multiple plays. It keeps the defense on their heals and it’s easy for the offense to pick up. Yes, I used all this for my son at 5 and 6 and it works. You can decide how much to use for your team, and depending on the kids, but it can happen.

What would you say about a 10v10 league? I don't like the idea but that's what we have available. Trying to figure the best way to attack this coaching 7-9 yr olds.

Hey coach. How do you deal with difficult parents? I have 1 that “thinks”his kid didn’t play enough and literally approached me on the field right after the game. I even played his kid for multiple series. Irony is his kid hasn’t even practiced 1 day yet. What’s the best approach. Cause I dont take to kindly to being told how to coach my team.

Totally get this, I’ve had to deal with this for sure, so you’re not alone. I set this expectation up front with the parents and players. I will do my best to rotate players in and out to give a fair amount of playing time, but I will also work on developing strengths and if I see someone is excelling in a specific position, I might keep them there to help develop that. I will also give players a chance at various positions, but if it’s not a fit I’m not going to put everyone in at QB or WR when it’s not the right position for them (especially with 4th grade up). Also, I’m big on showing up for practice, giving all your effort if you want to play. I can’t have you not show up at practice or give half effort and then expect to play a ton during games. These are all things I put up front, so when a parent asks me about their player, I can go back to those principles on why they are playing as much as they are. If you haven’t set those expectations, here’s what I recommend. “I appreciate you sharing your concern. We obviously want every player to feel like they are getting out there and playing enough to make an impact. I have a specific rotation strategy that focuses on developing each player’s strengths. We do our best to give everyone an opportunity, but sometimes I’ll keep players in when they are hot or I’ll take someone out if they are struggling. It all follows the game plan and we make adjustments depending on the game. I enjoy having ___ on the team. As you can imagine when players don’t practice I don’t know much about their ability and dedication to the team, so I can’t play them as much as I want to. I’d love to play him/her more, so please make sure they are at practice, ready to go and giving full effort. That’s the best way to increase play-time. Happy to discuss this more in person. I’ll connect with ____ and encourage him/her to step up as a leader and show me what they’ve got out there. I appreciate you coming to me. Let me know if you have any other questions. Just know I’ve got the best interest of this kids out there and we want to make it a great experience for everyone. See you at practice!” I like to address it right away and be direct without sharing too much. I also breathe a few times before sending a text/email/or talking face to face so I don’t let me emotions lead. Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.

And This is my 2nd season coaching 8U flag and it has helped me set a foundation and has been vital to my success as a coach. You have helped me tremendously. This is the first time I had had someone question my coaching. And I guess at some point in time I was going to have to deal with this. Your right about breathing because my first thought was to help get his son on a different team because I don’t have time to deal with this sort of thing. I love the kids and want everyone to learn and have have fun. And I try my best to teach and am patient as I can be. But I am also competitive. Once again thank you for everything and taking the time to respond to me very quickly.

Awesome video. Do you tailor your plays after seeing what skills they have on Day 1? For example, I've been holding off on the wrist bands until I see the talent and then pick the plays.

Yes, you can do that. I just don’t like to switch them up once the season starts. Stick with your playbook in my opinion - then run the progressions in the most effective formations - and find your skilled players in their best positions and keep them there for each series. I like giving a preview of the plays as early as possible so we are ready for our 1st game asap, so I come to our 1st practice with our plays ready. We then usually identify our best plays and make adjustments for which direction to target/weak side of the defense/short or deep yardage, etc based on the defense. That’s how I approach it.
