Coaching The Glide Part 1 - Short Season Coaching Strategies for Glide Shot Put

So...Covid sucks. There I said it. But what really sucks is that even if you have a season this year amid all this mess, it will be super short, there won't be a lot of meets, and you're going to have even less time than a normal season to get all your throwers on the same page and ready to compete. You will have your brand new throwers, your middle of the road kids, and your most advanced athletes all starting on the same day and all with limited time. What can you do? I'm super bummed that my 6th graders from 2019 have not gotten to train or compete until *possibly* their 8th grade year. I really appreciate the tips on getting a lot of good value out of such little time!

Yup. 6 meets. Three very small “qualifying meets” for kids with the potential to qualify for states. After that was our class championships (class meaning school size). There was a last chance meet to qualify. And this weekend is the state championship. Very small meets. Very restricted. No spectators allowed. But at least it was something. I’m hoping the spring is a little more “normal.”

I have issue with getting my new throwers to glide far enough to reach the front of the pit. Are there any specific drill that focus on movement. I have quit a few new throwers. Its tough to have them all engaged in a 2 hour training period.

Yes. Keep watching this series because there are a few drills that go over getting more distance across the circle. It’s a very common issue with newer throwers. If you have a bunch of new throwers you should have them all do drills together at the same time like you might see at a track and field camp.
