Good clip. I started with a 12 lbs sledge hammer I had laying around to practice. Just made my first gada styled hammer using a junior sized basketball filled with cement. About 24 lbs now. Can feel the burn now.

Excellent video coach. I agree with your assessment that each large jump should be associated with a good volume of solid training. I didn't jump from 10lbs to 20lbs until I had at least 6 months of training under me. Now, a year has gone by since then and I am debating on whether to jump to a 25 or a 30. I can do about 100 Hanuman complexes (50 each side) in about 5 minutes. Would it be wise to make the larger jump to 30 or be more conservative and take the modest jump to 25? Thanks for your help and your excellent education.

It sounds like you can do a 30lb if you can 20lb for reps. This is why I like the Onnit Quad Mace because it feels like 30lb (when it's 25lb). It's handle is longer and lighter being made of wood making the distal weight feel even heavier (as classic Gadas from India were made). Reinventing the Steel Mace is a bad ass Pantera reference! Perhaps Steel Clubs from Hell? or Far Beyond Kettlebell is next? All bad jokes aside, great content!

🤘🏼Thanks🤘🏼I was listening to that album during a mace workout and had to call it that in tribute. Believe me, I’ve thought so many titles like that. Lol That band alone saved heavy metal on so many levels in the 90s.

Is there a big difference between using a wooden gada or a steel mace if they are both 10 lb?
@CoachVikingVaughn3 жыл бұрын
With its function not much, but with durability yes there is huge difference. If you to do this longterm -- just get steel.

I’m up to a 20 lb mace and can do 5 sets of 360s in each hand position (100 total) I wanna get myself a kettlebell. What’s a good weight to start??
@CoachVikingVaughn5 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, for kettlebell beginner male I would say 16-20KG if under 200lbs. Then if over 200lb a 20-24KG kettlebell would work.

How do we get the mace with the celtic knot on it?
@CoachVikingVaughn2 жыл бұрын
Sorry that that mace is custom (so are the racks). I sanded off the black paint to expose the steel underneath and then had a friend paint the head with the triquetra symbol.

I want to buy my first steel mace. A ten pounder. What is a good brand?

Onnit is mainly the go to with steel maces, but there are many others as well I feature in this Steel Mace Training FAQ article here: www.coachvaughn.net/2020/05/05/steel-mace-training-faq/

@@CoachVikingVaughn Which do YOU prefer and why? I want good quality. Buying cheaper stuff just to get started never pays off. I notice the two other brands you mention are about double the price of the Onnit. Why is that? What's the difference? Better fit, finish, design? Better grade of steel? What?
@CoachVikingVaughn3 жыл бұрын
I prefer Onnit steel maces because I like the knurling and thick handle diameter. I’ve had them for 5 years now and they’re still in good shape . Apollo, Agatsu, and Wolf Brigade have raised their prices greatly since I posted the FAQ article/video. I like those because they go heavier from 35-55lbs. Wolf Brigade’s however doesn’t have knurling, but has a pommel end instead (with a much bigger mace head).

I blew my shoulder out but I’ve been lifting for years. Would you suggest a 10lb or 15lb to start?
@CoachVikingVaughn4 жыл бұрын
I think you’ll be fine with a 15. However, I don’t recommend 360’s for beginners (especially with a chronic injury). This workout linked below focuses on getting your lats stronger with handling the mace’s asymmetrical load: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWLEiICvpt1nm5I&app=desktop If your shoulder is also still stiff I would heavily recommend Indian clubs to help rehab it. I wrote a whole article on my website with much more content: www.coachvaughn.net/blog/2018/7/25/best-indian-club-drill-for-shoulder-health

I really wish they still made the "Celtic" 15lb'er...
@CoachVikingVaughn3 жыл бұрын
It's not hard to make. I used sand paper to get the black matte finish off to expose the steel (also easier if you have a sand belt or handheld electric one) and then had a client paint that triquetra symbol on there.

@@CoachVikingVaughn oh? i thought they were made this way for some reason like maybe i'd seen someone else with this same style but perhaps mistaken. otherwise only seen a couple other guys make theirs all orange or green... personally i've been thinking about the possibility of having silicone covers made for the heads to make it easier to clean the blood off.
