I am 70 years old and been a gym rat from the 1960's/ I am now trying to transition into kettlebell work and the heavy club and most of all the mace. I have done enough work over the years with free weights in body building. Now at this stage of the game i want to build a stronger cord and total body strength. This will help me to live longer and not having to see the medical people as much. My body is really loving this type of change and it asks were have I've been. thanks for your input about the differences in mace and sledgehammers. i will continue to train for the rest of my physical life. IT IS THE ONLY WAY OF LIVING.

I'm 12 years behind you and feel exactly the same way. Once my dad retired at age 66, he started walking as much as possible. He is 5'10 and he weighed 230 lbs. Now he's down a couple of pants sizes and at age 80, he's a beast. Good Luck!!

Way to go! If you take an advice: work on your balance as well. That's a game changer.

I'm glad I came across this I was wondering the same thing. What's the big deal with using a sledge instead of a mace. Question answered. Thank you.

I've never heard of someone complain about the shape of equipment. I have hex dumbbells that work the same as round ones. I have a round kettlebell I've seen people with a kettlebell shaped like a gorilla head. I've worked in construction for a few years and have never seen a sledgehammer break. I've also been a gym instructor and PT and have seen gym equipment break all the time. I saw a Mace on Amazon go for $70 and a sledgehammer the same weight go for $27. If you buy a Mace you have a very specific piece of workout equipment if you buy a sledgehammer you have a new tool with a thousand uses and a very fun workout. Your point on wanting a smooth handle is fucking weird no one cares about a handle. I use to do pull ups on door frames and lift stones and plenty of other people do to. If you want a rounded handle sand the wooden handle till it's round enough and wrap it in para cord. You made some some really odd arguments in this video. You have a line of maces but admit you had to borrow the hammer makes me think you're bias and I assume you want to push the mace so more people will download your ebook

I know, the audacity I dare try to educate people. I should try to be more like you and write book worthy comments to show how butt hurt I am with no subscribers on a ghost channel. Good luck getting strong with a 7lb sledgehammer. You’re clearly getting more of workout being a keyboard warrior 👍

@@CoachVikingVaughn Yes the audacity to point out somethings you said on an open platform and help people see the other side of your points using my years of experience as a personal trainer. Using an account with no uploads doesn't lessen my points. Just because I deleted the videos I uploaded when I was a teenager still doesn't take away from the points I've made. It's not a 7lbs hammer it's a 20lbs hammer I have. And yes I have gotten strong using it. I've reached all my fitness goals 😂 I still use it to this day even though I bought it 9 years ago as a 20 year old starting a new job in construction and Ive had dozens of clients walk away smiling and sweating after great training with it. It's a fun way to exercise that I feel more people should try and you seem genuinely offended by that. You literally have "viking" in your name I thought you'd enjoy the idea of swinging a hammer around 😂

You make a great argument and I tend to agree. More importantly, I bought a $25, 8 lb. sledge from Harbor Freight yesterday to get started on mace training and it is very obvious while I swing it that it twists along with the oval handle being less than optimal. I assumed this to be the case going into this option. This works for me because I’m impatient, I needed a sledge anyway and am ordering 3 maces. I do not recommend using a sledge as a permanent substitute. Making a gada out of concrete would be cheaper. I’m loving your videos as I learn. Thanks for posting.

Swinging a sledgehammer out of curiosity is totally understandable in the start (especially if you’re not sure about buying a mace yet). But yes, over time it’s like trying to eat soup with a fork if you want to move forward training it more often. Thanks, and glad you’re loving the videos 👍

@@CoachVikingVaughn 10 lb. mace arrives Wednesday. Planning to order a 15 in a month or two along with a 5 if my kids or wife want to join me. Your book came in today and I plan to recommend it to the 5 people that read my FB posts. lol

Barbell weights are round so they can be moved around. The bar becomes the axel and the weights the wheels. They thus can also be picked up and dropped without concern of the bar changing rotational orientation.... Kettle bells are swung between the legs and racked. A cube would not be ideal for either of those movements and would likely cause injury.

Not a bad video tho I use the sledge not because I had it for my construction job but I tend to do slow reps so each swing is like slow motion, tire striking is fast rep for me since I'm more experienced with it

you're right a sledgehammer cannot replicate a mace. However it can replicate a Mugdar or a Meel which are a different beast to a mace all together and in some countries IE the UK (where i live) maces/clubbells haven't really caught on same with Mugdars and Meels however you can get special made for the gym sledgehammers which are cheaper than the average mace you get here (plus postage cost), and given I live in the poorest city in the UK I've got to take what i can get

Huh..? What does round versus rectangular have to do with speed of movement ?? Surely you are not moving a mace, or a kettle- or bar- or dumbbell at a speed that would make air-resistance relevant, and certainly not with the weights involved -

It's called physics buddy (geometric shapes). Force and velocity plays a huge role into shapes and why ballistic swings (cleans, snatches, jerks) variations build athleticism and strength with a planned program.
