How do these compare to Onnit? And do you happen to know where onnit is made?
@dcartier16927 ай бұрын
Another thumbs up for the Retrospec 10 pound. When shopping for a 7 pound for my wife, Retrospec was out of stock (Amazon in EU) so I got a lighter - 2.5 kg (5.5 pound) - “Power Guidance”, which I would place above Retrospec in quality: invisible weld joint, beautiful finish, excellent knurling and metal end cap. Recently being out of range of Amazon shipping, and wanting to move up in weight, I purchased a 6 kg (13.2 pound) and 4 kg (8.8 pound) labelled “CLUBBELL”. Very inferior, with messy weld joint, irregular finish, knurling as an after thought and plastic end cap. The most irritating aspect, however, is the balance - they have proportionately lighter handles than the Retrospec or Power Guidance (very thin walls on the steel tube, I guess) making flow moves that rely on handle momentum more difficult; though challenges can provide benefits too. Thanks for this excellent comparison providing a baseline for expectation!

Hey Coach Vaughn, love your work. (Mechanical engineer here.) When you say 'cast' - they're not cast. The head is steel, turned on a lathe. The handle is a bit of tube that's been knurled on a lathe. The handle is welded to the head, not cast. That's just how this manufacturing process works. (Kettlebells, by comparison, are generally cast steel, but maces are fabricated by welding the two fundamental components together, and - for completeness - heavy steel clubs are generally turned from solid steel round bar on a lathe.) This is just an FYI, for the sake of accuracy in future. I am sure if you asked Onnit or any of the other manufacturers, they would confirm this. All the best, and again thank you for your excellent content.
@CoachVikingVaughn2 жыл бұрын
Okay thanks for the info, ya I got in the habit of saying “cast” mainly from looking at how kettlebells were made and, now remember one of my other engineer clients (Palmdale,CA is all aerospace engineering) telling me about lathes with maces. Thanks for the feedback - will be sure to put out more in the future 👍

I started with a 10lb retrospec and upgraded to a synergy for a wider diameter handle. It's the best mace I've tried so far, which isn't many to be honest. Cap is plastic, weld is nice. I have a 20lb yes4all. Plastic cap, sus weld, gnarling still shreds my hands. And scored a power guidance 20lb which is well crafted and has a steel cap.

I tried to order a CAP mace on Amazon and it said they don’t ship that to my area in checkout (that was first to see). Then I ordered a Garage Fit one…and it’s been two weeks and has not come. So there’s a lot of bad management from these companies. But yes, I’m big into steel caps for mainly the longevity. Incline Steel Mace was first I saw plastic caps with years ago and rust came pouring out it. It’s a the biggest sign of cheap mace.

Great review, I was told that set for set Mace is very similar to onnit Maces from length to handle diameter from 10 lb up any thoughts? Can you a comparison 10lb onnit Mace to TACFIT Steel Mace 10lb handled diameter? Steel coating? And knurling? Which is better.
@CoachVikingVaughn2 жыл бұрын
I’ve only heard from friends say that SFS had smaller diameter handles, and then started using the same Chinese production houses as Onnit to correct that issue. So can’t fully verify that - but am planning a part 2 with this including more brands on Amazon. But the handle diameter is the same with TACFIT and Onnit. TACFIT feels rougher in a good way with their powder coat with better grip and friction around the knurling - as Onnit’s coat is a bit more slick and not as aggressive on the knurling side. So if you were doing more complexes with a medium sized mace…onnit be good. If you’re looking to swing heavy….TACFIT. Both are good.

I just got a 7 and a 10 pounder from Amazon by Body Sport. They were the least expensive that I saw. They have steel end caps, excellent welds and finish. My only complaints are that the knurling is a bit too aggressive and there was a little blemish on the edge of the cap end on the 7#. For the money, they're an excellent value. I'm not an expert mace wielder, but I am an experienced metal worker and welder.

Tacfit a bit more expensive, plus no free shipping = an extra $35 for the 15 lb mace vs the B+ recommended retrospec mace. I'm not going to do any tire pounding with mine, so I'm thinking the retrospec should be fine for me.

Hi, thank you for this video. At 2:41 you say that the cast of the Yes 4 All Steel Mace ''is also the worst out of the four here as you see so i don't recommend this for tire striking it's likely going to warp the handle over time because it's not a good cast''... ??? How do you arrive at such a conclusion just through visual observation? The weld on the Yes 4 All Steel Mace is certainly coarser, but from the claim that to hit a tire, it will probably deform the handle over time because it is not a good cast while the traces of machining are simply more visible. I do not understand the objective and factual basis of your reasoning.
@CoachVikingVaughn Жыл бұрын
As stated in the video, plastic end caps (3:58). This is a major sign the handle is of poor integrity from the 8 years I've bought, trained, and coached, with steel maces (specifically, this happened when I got an "Incline Steel Mace" in 2017). When the plastic cap eventually pops off from use -- this allows for more debris and moisture to rust it from the inside out. So not only with it slowly warp over time with tire striking; it will implode out the debris after every strike. You can clearly see the photos by reviewers stating these exact issues on the Yes4All Steel Mace Amazon page by clicking on the 1 star reviews for factual basis. The Onnit steel maces I've used have taken a beating for those 8 years with me and training sessions because their solid quality end caps. Secondly, do I really have to say a company that doesn't even use actual photos of their steel maces (more so, used mine ripping off my steel mace rack 1:45) and uses poorly edited photoshopped ad images . . . is a crap company to buy from?
@stephenn5675 Жыл бұрын
@@CoachVikingVaughn So you're saying it's going to slowly warp over time because it's going to rust from the inside. Ok, that makes sense. To avoid this, I will grease the inside of my 4 All Steel Mace. The advantage of a removable plastic cap is that you can ballast the Steel Mace by putting stuff inside, and replace the plastic cap with something else that you screw. Thanks for your good work.

Trust me, I buy as much USA made stuff I can, but when I got into maces & clubs back in 2014 - Onnit was the only choice. I actually looked into making my own USA made steel maces, and economically I would go bankrupt in less than a year from material costs. It’s why you only see adjustable maces & clubs being more popular in the US, and the average cost of them is $300-400….which in my opinion is just overboard for a simple tool. So ya, many are gonna take the China made $50 mace with free Amazon shipping every time.
