I've had treatment resistant major depressive disorder for a very long time. I also suffer from insomnia. Ice baths have made a huge difference in my mood and sleep. It's not a silver bullet, but anything that can help you feel better about yourself, more self control, confidence and better sleep is huge. It's a weird thing. I have to talk myself into doing it every time. I don't enjoy the build up, or the bath itself, but I sure feel so much better afterwards.

I used to work at a coffee shop and the customers would always ask what I drank because I was always on 10 from like 5am but I don't drink coffee, it was always cold showers at 4am which absolutely sucked I'm too lazy for all that now, but totally cranked me up, I would get out the car Singing and banging my music at 5am, frost everywhere taking my jacket off. Body just gets used to it, discipline! I've been meaning to get back into that rythym it lasts all day. Really difficult to get back into when you can snuggle in bed till the sunrise though! For those who also haven't heard of brown fat: "Brown fat breaks down blood sugar (glucose) and fat molecules to create heat and help maintain body temperature. Cold temperatures activate brown fat, which leads to various metabolic changes in the body. Most of our fat, however, is white fat, which stores extra energy. Too much white fat builds up in obesity." National Institute of Health

Why would the snow even matter when you are plunged into freezing water? Getting out out probably feels a little warmer until the wind blows. I remember submerging my leg into freezing water before I was taped up for soccer and again after our practice and games. After 30 minutes my leg was useless until it warmed back up but, I definitely did not feel the cold weather as much while playing.

Used to only take cold showers all year round but can’t stand to be fully clothed in the cold! Look at this guy though…he obviously pushes through to stay healthy no matter how bad he feels and it just confirms some people are freaking super heroes and some are just NOT, like myself! This is really interesting because as a young fella (40 yrs ago) I could not resist the temptation to go for a dip at any time of the year, two I can recall was swimming in a river in the high country in the middle of winter and one swimming in the ocean, same in middle of winter. The ocean one was that cold it was like geting hit with a thousand tiny hammers, but got used to it after a short time and the feeling afterwards was exhilarating.

Um.... will hof is cool and all but um... there is a small country called India. There are a few people in this country. They came up with some stretch exercises and some breathing techniques. @@baronmunchhausen6682 You are right. White people need help with accessibility. What I'm pointing out is the lack of awareness and depth in the western world at large. One guy (Hof) learns fire breathing and horse stance and charges people to follow his course. No harm. These two small activities change peoples lives. Now imagine if the dam gates were opened and the west adopted more and more techniques and followed from the root. The source! Not just a guy who can make some money but a real teacher who can show you a whole world view shift. A view of being human not a western or white person who needs everything watered down and seemingly empty. Connection to the absolute truth. @@MissWobbles its meant to trigger an altered state of awareness & stress response. The brain then has to prioritise certain functions as it senses imminent threat. Then with a sustained length of time in the water the brain makes certain alterations to the stress response so you calm down. Which eventually programmes the brain to cope much better under stressful situations. Less strain on your heart etc. In the long run it makes your system able to run more efficiently with less steep spikes in hormones & more able to stay grounded & more focused in the Freeze, Fight, Flight state. You gotta push past that. It takes me 7 minutes for the pain to subside then it’s totally relaxing. There’s the initial shock, then ankles wrists and clavicles ache like crazy for several minutes, then nothing. I have done 20 minute sessions many times before I really feel my body temp drop and start to shiver. My baths have only gotten as low as 39 degrees Fahrenheit though and there’s a major difference in ten degree intervals of temp so i can’t speak for your specific situation. All I can say is I’m a totally average dude and i still fear the initial dunk and I still hate the aches yet somehow doing it just gives me relaxation, satisfaction, and a little confidence.

It’s at least another motivation to take a shower if you ever get depressed /self sabatoge. The distress tolerance you learn from it is part of dealing with fear. The other side is knowing how you are overwhelmed (resources to deal / vs / demands on you) and. To break that down, and then you need to deal with the fears on the other side of it, and shame and social comparison being like “I’m X yrs old I need to be here already” kinda stuff. You also got to feel things and find the need in it. And just process and move through it.

A couple of months later, now I'm showering with 10 deg Celsius and I'm pretty comfortable when I'm doing it. Start With something that you could tolerate for a week, and start gradually to lower the temperature in the further seasons. And you will see that you can do this. 😉 And relax when you are doing it. I tried an ice bath but I'm not quite there yet. That really was hard and something I need to work up to . However, I have one of these same black tubs in my backyard.
