I love Coffeehouse Crime, but there was more to this case that had a couple of good comeuppance type of moments, esp involving Laura. She was insanely jealous of Jennifer and obsessed with Colton, even getting his name tattooed after being busted while awaiting trial. Colton did have a crush on Jennifer, and was always offering her drugs to entice her to come over. When Laura was in jail awaiting bond, she was recorded telling her grandmother and a friend how Jennifer and her family deserved everything they got. Jennifer's parents, the prosecutor, and the judge "are going DOOWWWNNN!" (you havta hear the recordings). And the best part was that Laura appealed her sentence and got a new trial. The prosecutor played the earlier recordings, and the jury doubled the original sentence. Laura's parents and grandma are just as despicable, as they had a Justice For Laura campaign going while Jennifer's parents were trying to grieve. Colton was remorseful and was known to be a blackout drunk & speed freak waving pistols around. He seemed more sincere than Laura. The pic in the toy area was at a Mexican hotel employee's home, who called the cops as soon as he could, hence the quick bust.

i understand it may seem forever for police to legally go in to the apartment. However, they have to follow that process of a search warrant for them to not violate the suspects rights. (i know he shouldn't have rights) but the last thing they want is to go in there without a warrant and end up catching the suspect and in the end the case being dismissed due to them not having the legal right of going into the apartment.

The motive that prosecutors were not aware of at the time was that Colton was in love with Jennifer, however, she did not feel the same way towards him. Colton had previously threatened Jennifer with a knife in front of a friend who had to intervene. She was very scared to be alone with Colton. There is a suspicion that she was taken into his apartment unwillingly and possibly at knifepoint. Also during the autopsy of her severed head, it was found that someone, possibly Laura had shot a bullet into her head through her open neck. If Sharon hadn’t told Colton that she had called the police he possibly would have had time to dispose of Jennifer’s body but he didn’t get that far and fled before he could finish the job. It’s a heartbreaking story, especially the fact that poor Jim had to find Jennifer like that and will forever be haunted by the image. My heart goes out to the Cave and Sedwick families. Poor Jennifer, she was just starting to get her life sorted out only for it to be cut short and in such a horrific way. Thank you Adrian for covering this case. Thanks, for covering this tragic event that took Jennifer Cave from her loved ones. I was there for Laura Hall's retrial... she was first given 10 years in prison for her part... This was because they couldn't prove that she had help murder Jennifer. But they know that she helped with her body, and fleeing to Mexico. (In reality, there are many things you didn't have in the video, and that's a good thing...) So during the retrial, Laura thought that she would be found not guilty... But, during her prison calls to her mother, she showed no remorse and was threating to Jennifer's family... These recordings were played for the jury, and based on these and other factors, she was given the max jail time of 11 years. I didn't know Laura was already freed as of 2018 - - - (but it's been over 10 years since her retrial.) This is both truly tragic, and sad.

The most plausible scenarios I can work out in my head for this murder taking place all involve a jealous Laura either waiting for them in Colton's apartment when they got home or else arriving at the apartment and not being happy to find Jennifer there. Those scenarios also make the way Laura assisted him to flee the country much more plausible as well..
@solarose78202 жыл бұрын
I think she just helped him cause she was so infatuated with him.
@FlameFlickers2 жыл бұрын
@@solarose7820 I think you're wildly underestimating how shocking it would be to walk into someone's apartment and find that they had a dismembered body in their bathtub. There's a world of difference between being infatuated with someone and being willing to stick by them in a situation like that. Also, it's unlikely he would have even let Laura into his apartment if the murder had occurred when she wasn't there.
@andy-wz1fi2 жыл бұрын
If Laura did it on a jealousy attack Colton would most likely say so instead of the bs story about passing out, as he never tried to protect Laura during his trial - he even said she was the one to mutilate the body -, also no physical evidence points to her actually doing it/being there when it happened and psychologists later attested that she was obsessive with their relationship to the point she would do anything he asked from her - including breaking laws like helping him flee - while Colton was much less interested in what they had
@FlameFlickers2 жыл бұрын

My guess/opinion Colten in his drunken state tried to sleep with Jennifer, she turns him down gets shot. He Panics and knows Laura would do anything for him so essentially recruits her for help.
@MfPuppies2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I mean he was blackout drunk, she was obsessed with him and treated her like shit but he still slept with her. I'm sure she was jealous of Jennifer due to the fact he was such good friends with Colton. So yeah I think Laura done it not Colton. Would it be more likely she walked in after the crime or that he woke up after blacking out and made to believe he did it. What time was his trip to the store? Any CCTV footage or did the cashier notice if he was intoxicated? What exactly were the details that prove Colton to be the killer? What was his motive? Laura's obsession would be a fine motive and would be why she seemingly had no problem "helping" in the clean up and getaway plan. Looks to me like everything went to her plan except when they got arrested? Maybe if I look into this case I will get my question answered and have no doubt that Colton is Jennifer's killer.

I don't understand this friendship with someone who was obviously in somewhat of a dark place and why did she seem to feel so responsible all things considering. Was she just a poor judge of character? I'm not blaming the victim but there are holes and all I can think is this guy was a manipulator and he manipulated her. This guy wasn't worth 1 second of this girl's time. God bless her and her devastated parents. He doesn't deserve to ever get out of prison!

Yeah I thought the same, at least that she shot her. The rest does seem plausible, or that he thought the police would blame him anyway, given his gun was used, so decided to dispose of the body. I guess we'll never know for sure but the question remains, why would she otherwise help him dispose of a body, cover up a murder, when she admitted he didn't threaten her? Who would do that? No-one who wasn't involved
@escopeto78492 жыл бұрын
Sound scenario. Colton was high and drunk but he would need an opener to do the kill. The ex looks to me like an Amber Heard-type deceiver, she would've at least conked Jennifer on the head or stab her before pushing her boytoy into further horrific things.

laura's interview really didn't sit right with me. I don't know this case or any of the people but the story i kind of think could be true is that laura saw jennifer taking Colton home while she was waiting outside his apartment stalking him for a booty call. She flipped out thinking Jennifer wanted to sleep with him, killed her and put her in the bath while Colton slept before leaving and going home to change, then returning to the crime scene where she could wake Colton up and blame him for the murder. Again I don't have a clue, just talking sh*t but the way she was describing Colton telling her about a body just didnt seem real. Either way i think she was more involved than she claimed.

It’s kind of a wild leap to think that Laura was the only murderer based on her awkwardness in the interview clips we saw. I don’t think the mother got the address out as clearly as we heard in the clip, and the operator’s human anyway, maybe she didn’t catch it. I’m sure most calls aren’t about murders and hence aren’t as distraught and panicked.
@boondocksdragon89592 жыл бұрын
It sounded like Jim was trying to spare Jennifer's mother the shock of what was in that apartment. He never told the dispatcher that she was dismembered or even that she was mutilated in any way until after the operator had asked about CPR, and even then, he simply said it was a "gruesome scene" or something kind of nondescript like that. It's an understandable confusion this time, but I totally agree that so many times, the dispatchers we hear on these stories seem almost oblivious to the intensity of situations requiring their attention.

Poor Jennifer. If only she would've stuck to what she said she originally had planned for that night (going to bed early). i have told my boys, all in their mid 20s. helping others is what we have to do. but you dont have to be doing it at the cost of your life. help others but stay safe. if you think your life is in anyway at risk, contact authorities immediately and find the others,professional help. sitting at home. i see my oldest, 22 at the time, walking past our house with a total stranger. turned out to be a homeless guy. I quickly threw on my shoes and chased after them, they got to the end of the street before I stopped them, asked what was going on. My son wanted to buy this guy dinner. I am so proud of that part, however the homeless man, wanted him to come with him and go to a specific restaurant. didnt want just cash. I gave the man 20, told him to enjoy a nice dinner. to think about his choices to take my son. told him about 3 places he could go to get help, no questions asked. however if I ever saw him leading my son away, police would be involved and or more issues would arise. year later. same guy was arrested and jail for murdering a local young man, homeless guy took every thing the kid had on him and tried to run. I say this so you stay safe. MOST people who need help dont want to harm you. however some dont care and will. and you have NO IDEA how to figure out who will harm you and when. Drunk friend at a bar? call an uber, or taxi. pay the fair and send them home. your life is worth so much more than an uber fee. you are not mean or selfish, protecting your life.
