No doctor ever saw the issues he found. I get more and more bed-bound every day without that surgery but I feel more for their children than myself. They’ve lost their mother and father. How can I really complain. I hope Dr. Shamji never gets released. He destroyed so many people with his selfish actions. No one belongs to another. I was thinking the same thing. Death penalty will not truly get justice for the people they kill because it won't bring them back. But I'm for the death penalty for serious crimes that can 100% be proven with evidence for things like murder and sexual assault. People like that do not get better or rehabilitated. They will continue to do more self serving behaviors if they are released. And sadly many do get released only to reoffend and ends more innocent lives. @@steviejrr I just want to point out that abuse doesn’t always start right from the off or violently. It can start years into a relationship and with little psychologically manipulative comments that may not be easily recognized in the moment. It’s not always clear cut. For example, one of my aunts dated this guy for close to three years and he gave no indication that he was capable of abuse. A few months AFTER they were married he became verbally and physically aggressive. He did a 180 once he felt that he had “secured her” and thought she wouldn’t be able to leave him. She did end it after a couple of weeks which is very quickly all things considered and managed to get out. Still it was almost three years in that the abuse started and if the situation had been different and she more dependent on him or especially if kids were involved that would have made it even more difficult.

Shamji's father was a renowned thoracic surgeon in Ottawa and was also affiliated with the University of Ottawa. While Mohammed Shamji was awaiting trial for the murder of his wife, his father attended a retirement dinner for a colleague and during a speech he made an incredibly inappropriate comment about domestic violence in a laughing manner. He was subsequently suspended from his position and ultimately resigned. It would appear that Mohammed Shamji learned much about how to treat his wife/women by how his father brought him up.

I left an abusive spouse, it was escalating. But you never believe it will lead to murder. Still, I was afraid enough to go to a shelter and lived there 3 months with my kids. Unless you've been through it, leaving can be almost impossible. I never judge those who keep staying because it was very traumatic on all of us leaving our familiar life and becoming so poor. People tell women to leave all the time, but then they look down on them for needing public assistance. The story is long, but the courts also won't give custody to the abused parent unless there's proof the abuser has harmed the child. So I would've stayed there if had to send them the to be alone with him as he got drunk and violent at night. Every night. My only option was to make an agreement with him, he could have everything, the house, the car, the furniture even, in exchange for him signing the agreement to giving me custody and he got only supervised visits. I also had to pretend to be his friend so he wouldn't think me his enemy. I agreed to the lowest child support the court would allow. So he wouldn't be mad. He agreed and so I could know my kids were safe, but we had nothing. Starting completely over was extremely hard. I never really achieved the success I had built in life until that point, starting from below zero makes it so hard, especially when you now have children to care for. I look back now, and see it truly had all the signs that my life and my kids' lives were in danger. I'm glad I left. But leaving doesn't give you back your life. An abusive relationship that involves kids and redoing your life changes things forever. It's so much better to never get into one. I know they aren't always apparent up front. But be so very careful, if you see any signs, trust me, RUN.

Do you think a third world country would pass up the oppurtunity to hire a world class surgeon just because he lacks some papers or something? He seems highly intelligent I think he can work himself around their system very easily. In third world country there's even a genius boy in india with no formal training that performs surgeries so I think that says alot that they don't quite have the same system of needing everything documented like in western countries. That would not be possible at all here since you need years and years of training and have official license before you are allowed to practice medicine.

It's a typical manipulation case. These men (and women) can be very clever and using tactics to get their victims to come back or remain by their side. I should know. It happened to me. The b'stard used every tactic to manipulate me and made out I was going mad. Thankfully a sharp-sighted colleague witnessed me being verbally abused and got me aside to management, who told me to get help. I found the strength to call my mum and dad (divorced but amicable). When I was told at work to "f off out the effing house and never come back" (before his usual "I'm sorry - let's talk" - usually that ended with either a verbal tirade or worse), I decided enough was enough - this time I had my key. My parents picked me up, took me to safety, and then when the ex was out at his night-shift, we returned along with my brother and his friends to get my cats and possessions out of that place. It's been just over eight years since I escaped him, and I won't look back now.

Unfortunately a typical symptom of a narcissist is that they can be very charming and manipulative. After the police case with him, you can see how apologetic he was and how he twisted his way back into her good books so she would drop the charges. It's sickening! But that's what these master manipulatorscan do to their partners. I managed to convince a British work colleague that her partner (happened to also be Muslim) was a narcissist. She never saw his behaviour as narcissistic before I spoke to her, but upon realising, has now managed to get out of the relationship. Sometimes it's good to listen to an outsiders opinion...

I am an MD originally from Toronto. I heard about this case first hand from medical friends that knew them. It is a horrible event all around - everyone loses and no one wins. I am impressed with your research on this case - even reporting in the Canadian press did not trace and document the long history of DV and betrayal in this marriage as you did. Hiding the signs that were clearly visible and obvious to people close to Elena, does a huge disservice to future victims of DV. Even an educated and independently financed woman can keep putting up with horrible treatment and abuse and people who know this can turn a blind eye. You correctly point out that as horribly as Mohammed acted, his incarceration is a huge loss to the patients in his community, especially in a socialized health system. We can only hope for the best for their children who must be terribly traumatized by the inexplicable loss of both parents at such a young age. Very well researched and excellent reporting on this case. I personally hope Elena”s story is heard by many young women who remember it, particularly if they become involved with someone like Mohammed.

As a Croatian, this case hit particularly hard for me. Elana actually declared herself to be Croatian, whenever she was asked about her nationality. An interesting detail here is that Mohammed's mother disliked Elana so much, that she once, in a fit of rage after an argument, pushed Elana down the stairs. The fall left Elana with only a slight spinal injury, but she could've been killed right then and there. Elana's mom begged her to press charges, but Elana didn't want to because, as she said: "How can I? She's his mother." And, although Mohammed saw Elana's third pregnancy as his way out, he wasn't too keen on her having their 2nd child. He even wanted her to get an abortion, but she said that she would have the child with or without him. After the birth of their oldest child, he attacked Elana in a fit of rage, almost throwing the child into a river they were walking by. Today, the oldest daughter keeps asking her grandmother if their father will come and kill them and is begging her grandparents to take them to Croatia. Only the youngest son asks the grandparents about Elana, as his sisters are too heartbroken and don't feel emotionally strong enough to ask their grandmother or grandfather about her.

The moral of the story: do not be so needy that you need to be in, or stay in a bad situation. This applies to men and women both. There is nothing wrong in being alone to get to know who you are and what you want in life. I simply do not understand this “Noah’s Ark mentality”. and the need to be part of a pair. Don’t get me wrong, coupling is the “normal” desire of most folks and I am not just speaking in a sexual connotation only. The adage “better alone than poorly accompanied” should be remembered when choosing a mate. Choose wisely.

Id say theres a difference between being needy and being manipulated. Needy implies its their fault for staying even after being abused. Manipulation is what abusers use. Most are phenomenal at it and are charismatic enough to keep you trapped. No victim “needs” the abuse. None of them stay in abusive relationships for the abuse. Most just feel they have no other options or still have hope. Its the type of situation you have to experience to understand.
