I had a couple of guys renting out my basement for years. They were heavy into black metal. I lovingly referred to them as my basement trolls. Best housemates I've ever had. They decided one day that they were going to teach me about black metal (It failed horribly) so it became a running joke in the house that they would just pop into whatever room I was in and yell "Who killed Mayhem??" and I would immediately reply with "Burzum killed Mayhem" because that is the only thing I could remember from that one day. I miss those guys. Nothing like walking into your kitchen at 9am to find a guy in corpse paint, wearing the usual metal attire but with the addition of a cute flower covered apron doing your dishes lol

I feel bad for Dead, Hellhammer, and Necrobutcher. Sounds like they just wanted to have fun, be different, & make music, even if they were angsty/edgy kids. Poor Dead…he needed real help & suffered in silence. The 80s-90s were a rough time to have mental health struggles.

this case is so ignorantly covered in general and rife with incorrect information, and I love coffee house crime but I figured he'd incorrectly cover it as well but i was somewhat pleasantly surprised that he did include some usually uncovered information, but varg did not burn down churches because of Satanism, satanic beliefs had absolutely nothing to do with it,varg felt Christianity blatantly destroyed Norwegian pagan cultures and the original religions of Norway so he burned down the churches because the churches and early Christians desecrated early Norwegian holy sites and burial sites...absolutely nothing to do with Satan and varg was not a Satanist,on top of that I think people should watch re-uploads of vargs channels upload about the early black metal scene and his relationship with euronymous theres alot more to it than what people say, varg is not a fucking neo nazi I think people really ignorantly portray him,he's opinionated as hell and has very old fashioned traditional values but he's not a nazi and euronymous was an absolute piece of garbage and this is not me being a fan boy because I like burzum and mayhem equally they were both incredible bands, but anyone who takes pictures of his dead friends suicide for kicks is a grotesque human being, also to correct one point you made...euronymous didnt make those pictures his album cover, dawn of the black hearts was a Brazilian mayhem bootleg album and people in the scene got ahold of the photographs and used it as the album cover it was directly euronymous himself

The photo of Dead’s body was not used by Euronymous, it was used by someone else to make the bootleg live album “The Dawn of the Black Hearts” and that Bootleg would eventually get an official release with higher quality audio and unreleased live footage dvd under the name “Live In Sarpsborg” with Necrobutcher on the cover. The band has already said that they REALLY hate that photo(s) and Necrobutcher said in an interview that he was planning to kill Euronymous himself because of it.

More "fun" details about said murder: the man killed was homosexual and it's widely thought that Faust committed the murder as an act of hatred towards him (I believe his side of the story is that the man came onto him and he killed him out of revulsion, but who knows). Second wave black metal was an absolute mess of hatred and bigotry, and some of that seedy underbelly still persists to this day.

I got the album Deathcrush when it was first released and together with the record was a coupon that said a photo book was initially planned to be included. However, as the photo book was not at the time completed, the coupon could be sent to the band and they would send the book out once it was completed. So I sent the coupon to the address with a letter commenting what I thought of the album. After a while I got a written letter back from Euronymous. This exchange of letters continued for a few more times when it suddenly stopped. I didn't really know what was happening with the band as this was a time before the internet and it wasn't until a number of years later when I finally had internet access that I found out he was killed. In the letters that I received from Euronymous, he actually came across as a nice person and to this day I still have the album, the letters and a photo that he sent me with one of the letters.

A couple things you got wrong: The Dawn of the Black Hearts is not only NOT a Mayhem album, but it also came out in '95, 2 years after Euronymous' death. The Dawn of the Black Hearts is a bootleg tape from the colombian scene. Now you might be wondering, how did they get Dead's photo to use as a cover? Euronymous had sent copies (not known if all of the same or different photos) to many of his penpals around the world, one of which in Colombia. That might also mean that despite Euronymous' father having burned Dead's photos after Euronymous death, there might still be more copies of the set out there. Euronymous didn't open the front door and followed some blood trail. Instead he had climbed through a window because he had no spare key, window which was of Dead's room so he immediately came across the scene. Varg is heavily suspected of having set fire to Fantoft, yes, but he technically was never proven to have been the perpetrator which is why that burning wasn't accounted in his sentence. The church burnings also weren't in the name of satanism, but rather as a retaliation to christianity. The satanism part came as a mix of lies of their own for shock purposes and widespread media misinformation. Ironically you could say that the lie became the truth, because after all that misinformation some copycats started doing the same in name of satanism thinking that's what the movement was all about. Varg didn't claim he killed a man in Lillehammer, but rather that one of them did which was true. I'm not sure where you got the "it's yet to be proven" part from, it's easily verifiable that Faust has been sentenced for it and the details of the events are also known. Varg didn't snatch Euronymous' knife, Euronymous never even got to get one even though he did try. Varg had a swiss army knife in his boot which was what he used. This one is a bit of a nitpick, but the guy who stayed at Varg's apartment was simply a friend that was already there when Varg and Blackthorn decided to drive to Oslo. He wasn't a roommate. They supposedly let him stay because he wanted to finish a movie they were watching. Some of your pronunciations were off, but that I think it's perfectly understandable.

Also, I enjoyed the movie Lord's of Chaos. Especially cuz I found out just before watching it, they chose to cast a Jewish actor to portray white aryan supremacist & "race-mixing" opponent, Varg Virkernes lol. Whether it was intentionally done to offend his beliefs or not, a person who is so offended by the mere existence of so many people / places / things is bound to be triggered quite a bit. But this one was particularly frustrating to him, because that casting decision was made on top of the very anti-varg and pro-euronymus composure of the film.

Sir, you burned down ancient churches, stabbed your friend to death, and left him in a stairwell. Women don’t _want_ you to like them. I also feel so bad for Dead. He needed help so badly, but he met Euronymous instead. I often wonder what he would have gone on to do if he’d gotten the support he needed before it was too late. I’ve seen “that” album cover and it haunts me, even more so knowing that Euronymous delighted in it. Dead didn’t deserve to be defiled like that. Even so, Euronymous didn’t deserve what happened to him either. It’s a terrible case. btw I've also had roommates who were so obnoxious that they made me want to sleep outside lol

@Huwhite Devil this is fundamentally untrue. Blackthorne of Mayhem is alive (the one who was present at Euronymous' apartment the night of the murder) Ihsahn, Samoth and Faust from Emperor are alive. Atilla, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher (the remaining {contemporary to that time period} members of Mayhem not yet referenced in this post) are all alive, the duo from Darkthrone are both alive (Nocturno Culto and Fenriz) Demonaz and Abbath from Immortal are alive, Satyr and Frost from Satyricon are alive... This list is just the guys who hung out at Helvete and it's still not even close to all of them, it's just to prove the point that the only two who died are Dead and Euronymous. It's far quicker to list those who are no longer with us than it is all of the Black Metal Inner Circle who are still here. Several did prison time aside from the two murderers (Varg and Faust) but otherwise they've managed to avoid loss of life.

Some corrections: While Euronymous did take the picture of Dead's dead body, he wasn't the one to use it for album art. The picture was sent to a pen pal he had in Brazil and that pen pal used it to release a bootleg live album. The album wasn't even released until two years after Euronymous had died. Also you mention that Varg found it suspicious that Euronymous wasn't dealing with the contracts in the shop because it was outside of shop hours, but the record store had already closed by then. Euronymous closed the record store a few months before he died.

I really appreciate the none sensationalised coverage of this case from you. As a member of the Norwegian black metal scene since the early 2000s I can say that anyone I've ever met says that Varg is crazy. He is a talented musician, and Burzum is among the best BM bands I've known. As long as you can separate the art from the person. I listen to the music, but loathe the person behind it. Most people in the BM are good and level-headed people, and those few people do not represent us as a whole. When I joined the scene in my teens, I did not experience any judgement from people outside of the scene. Many of my friends worked IT jobs at big companies, showing up in Mayhem or Burzum t-shirts without any issue. I am sure that Varg murdered Eronymous with malice. So many things point to that. He claimed self defense, but common sense debunks that. Not only did he drive from Bergen to Oslo to meet the person he was "afraid of" alone, but he hid his tracks. Also, when acting in self defence you do not run after the person down a stairwell, continuing to stab them instead of running for your life.

It's honestly really frustrating how deeply Varg's influence permeated into the genre too. Black metal, more than any other metal subgenre, has a gigantic problem with Nazis and bigots, to the point where "national socialist black metal" is a subcategory of it that gets brought up a lot. You have projects like Nokturnal Mortem, Absurd, Peste Noire, and of course Varg's own work in Burzum that very explicitly promote hate, and even bands that seem like they would otherwise be safe end up being incredibly sketchy. It's hard to argue that without Varg being such a large presence, we might never have seen a rise in that type of lyrical matter. And it's doubly sad because black metal can go to a wide variety of different places. I'd even argue the Satanic aspects are some of the least interesting: within the same genre you can find the whimsical shoegaze influence of Alcest, the cosmic meanderings of Blut Aus Nord, and even explicitly leftist groups like Panopticon and Dawn Ray'd that stand in explicit opposition to NSBM.

Vargue was just a student of Euronymous regarding these aspects. Also i really doubt they are pushed in today's black metal though i am not the biggest fan of black metal as a genre but I can't bring to mind a specific band that does it anymore at least a mainstream one. Point is the white supremacy and Satanism prejudices regarding black metal were created and promoted entirely by Euronymous in the genre. He even wrote a book with his views about it saying he didn't consider any non Satanist to be black metal artist. The notion that these things are general problems of the genre is completely false.

Alright so as someone who has spent way too much time fixated on the early norwegian black metal scene, let me give a few quick corrections. 1: The idea that Mayhem used a picture of Dead's body as an album cover is a common misconception. That album, Dawn of the Black Hearts, was actually a bootleg live album, not an official release. The fact that the picture made it onto that album is still a mark against Euronymous though, as it goes to show just how much he was passing those pictures around. 2: Varg wasn't a Satanist, and didn't burn down those churches for Satan. Varg's is an Odinist neo-nazi, as later mentioned in the video, and the church burnings were according to him revenge for the Christianization of Norway. 3: We don't actually know what happened in that apartment, or who started the fight. That's all Varg's testimony, and Varg is a notoriously unreliable narrator who was trying to spin the killing as self-defense. That does get touched on later in the video, but the framing of the actual section on the murder felt a bit off. Also, the knife that was used wasn't one from Euronymous' apartment. I remember someone set fire to the old wooden door of our church 20 or so years ago. It was replaced and within a month it was set ablaze again. The priest wasn't fucking around so he had the new door fireproofed and installed cameras. The culprits came back and tried again. The community couldn't figure who would do such a thing as the church was a cornerstone of the community. Everyone was confused when it turned out the black metal group that hung out at the defunct record shop was behind the arson. They also admitted to setting fires at other churches as well. Needless to say, after they were caught, black metal was viewed VERY negatively for years in the area. It doesn't help that, a few years later, a member of that same community murdered his girlfriend.

Varg burned down the Stavkirk as revenge for the conversion of “pagan” Norway. The irony is, Stave-churches have many of the same architectural elements as the old Norse “pagan” temples, so by doing so, he was actually destroying a surviving, physical archaeological link to the “pagan” past.

In the incident where Euronymous took the photo of Dead, made necklaces of his skull, and used it as an album cover, Necrobutcher was SOOO upset, he cussed out and left Mayhem. Strangely, when Euronymous was later murdered by Varg Vikernes, Necrobutcher returned to Mayhem. The sad part of all of this is I liked Mayhem and I LOVED Varg's project Burzum. They brought knives to gigs, smashed beer bottles onto people's heads - these people were not even moshing they were chilling by the side - with the reason "this person is a nazi sympathiser" when the poor guy wasn't even part of anything except that he was the organiser's assistant and also a father. These kids moshed while holding on to knives. They also tried to burn the hang out venues of other older punks, sometimes boasting about it on social media.

He knows that but he clearly doesn’t care. That’s leftists for you; they will lie as long as it advances their political agendas. He chose to use it anyway in order to mock Vikernes and to get other brainwashed leftist lemmings to think it was the real Vikernes. This is the mark of a real coward. The first thing I noticed that was unusual about that bizarre footage was the obvious American landscape in the background; Vikernes lives in the French countryside. And for the record, I am no Varg fan in any way. I agree with probably 70% of his politics, but I am an Orthodox Christian and I find his mindless rants about Christian theology laughably inaccurate as well as absurd. Like pretty much all neo-pagans he unknowingly repeats Protestant concepts and more modern-day reformist heresies, and then claims that is what Christianity as a whole is; I have always said that neo-pagans and Protestants, ironically, seem have an awful lot in common in that regard. But that is a different subject altogether. What is equally ironic is that is the exact same thing that this channel did to him when it mocked him by using false footage of someone else and claimed it was Varg. There is no doubt that Vikernes is a rather intelligent fellow, but he is embarrassingly one-dimensional, with the stunted maturity level of a perpetual adolescent. I have actually met and spoken with people who knew him in his youth and some people who interacted with him online and he is an extremely stubborn man. If you even slightly disagree with him on just one thing, he immediately reacts with all-out anger and then blocks you. He is essentially 50 going on 17. Look up his treatment of Tom “Survive the Jive” and Marcus “Golden One”. I’m no fan of neo-paganism, but you couldn’t ask for nicer, more pleasantly even-keeled fellows. Varg carried out a childish attack on Tom and even encouraged his fans to attack the guy on his wedding day - all because he got married in a historic Anglican cathedral. They even went so far as to belittle his wife and make fun of their traditional wedding attire (I guess LARPy costumes and wolf skins would have been more appropriate for Vikernes’ tastes). Again, that is the sheer mark of a coward, not to mention it is also effeminate as all hell. What grown, adult fifty-year-old man does that?

Varg tho sick in the head and obviously suffering from mental illnesses and a overall gross person is far from unintelligent. They guy is a fantastic musician and composer whos able to play a bunch of instruments. Hes also made his own fantasy role playing game with its own mythology and lore... the guy is smart...

It's insane to think of how many in the rap industry have been killed going back decades as we glimpse into this metal band with this crazy murder.

Lord, in the last 3 days a couple rappers got killed; but these days anyone can go on Uribe or "cringe" tictard" and say they are rappers aka Sideshow bobs two bastard twins the "Island Boys"! Two be bonifide rapper you should at least have received like minimum of views or renown to be considered professional. Funny I kept trying to type bonifide spell checker would change it to homicide! The list of murdered rappers would prolly be 6 videos at minimum

Has there ever been a comprehensive in depth video series about all the Rappers who met their demise via the gun? Like the old wedge live by the sword ; die by the sword!

That’s not insane at all. In fact violent crime is extremely common to African Americans. 1/3 African American men are convicted felons of violent crimes. 60 percent of the violent crime and basically 12 percent of the population

I was a fifteen year old hard core metal head when this happened and I remember it vividly. I was too young to understand back then. But watching it now has had quite an effect.

As a metalhead, i am glad you covered this, the whole black metal scene around Norway was so wild, also it's such a shame it came to all this cause these people were such talented musicians, what could have been so great turned all so tragic in the end

I am a lifelong metal head, and read the Lords of Chaos book in the late '90s, but I feel like I still learned new things in this video, great job

Thanks for bringing up a very important detail that very seldomly comes picked up - the five year age difference between Varg and Euronymous. At this age, it is massive and imo contributes a very important patricidal explanation to fatherless Varg’s blind rage.
