The amount of people in the comments defending him too, no matter what your stance on the police is he abused his girlfriend and child, and did all of this because he viewed her as his property, I have no doubt her and her new partner would of gotten shot whether she said he was a police officer or not.

When you say it like that….hmm 🤨🤔. My father and my ex husband were like this. They were ALWAYS the victim. I remember once just shaking my head and whispering to myself “what can I do differently”. It had NOTHING to do with me. He was, and still is, an addict who makes poor decision and poor decision. My son, who is in college, said to his father “Dad, you need to get your life together. I mean, you keep making the same bad choices”. I was so proud of him, though it was sad to see the child, be the adult. I, only, write this bc I am hoping that any woman (or man) who keeps looking inward and blaming yourself, can take a step back and think “No, it is not me”. Trust your instincts. Narcissists are very good at playing the victim, over and over. Then manipulate the significant other to believe that the fault resides with them. ❤❤

The Karpman drama triangle is a social model of human interaction and it maps a type of destructive interaction that can occur among people in conflict. The triangle of actors in the drama are persecutors, victims, and rescuers. In Raoul's case, he is always the prosecutor until someone starts to question his controlling, blaming, critical, oppressive, angry, authoritarian, rigid and superior behaviors, at which point he quickly assumes the role of a victim which in this model is not intended to represent an actual victim, but rather someone feeling or acting like one.

That's actually a very simplistic viewpoint. There are different factors to consider, personality being one of them. Some people are naturally able to reason through their upbringing while others are far more damaged. It's not always a choice. That's not an excuse for bad behavior, but an explanation that society could learn from.

I've not been watching for longer than the first minute, but saw your comment & had to say yes that is a huge issue with not only the KZbin videos but also the mainstream media that sometimes will lose focus of the reason for the reports, & that is the victim. Sometimes it seems like the mainstream media news & coverage shows like dateline or more so the entire network like cnn & fox, both who get into the nitty gritty details of the perpetrators like they're trying to give excuses for the crimes rather than just reporting on the history of & the reasons for why they did what they did, giving excuses for the reactions and what made up the decisions they made rather than just giving facts of, and its almost like they are trying to get the public/viewer to feel sorry for them but forgetting about the actual victims and how they are either no longer here because of a stupid person who has stupid reasons for doing what they did, while sometimes they even victim blame like they were in the position, in the wrong place at the wrong time because of their own bad choices, which can sometimes be true but the majority of victims are victims because of the decisions & choices made by an angry person & had that one person not decided to kill or attack/attempt to take something that is not theirs, & that is the only reason why any victims have lost their lives or families have been torn apart. No matter what bad choices or good choices you & I make, if a madman is hunting for a victim, then you & I can have our lives taken only because we were at this movie theater at this time, or were at this street crossing at the same time as the people who have decided to use their vehicles as a weapon! Focusing on the bad guys is a major concern for me so I only watch the channels that focus on the victims & sharing their stories rather than just focusing on the blood, gore, salacious details & sordid secrets the victims should not have to have drudged up because it makes the story spicier!!

Raoul's first comments in the video are illuminating. He was aware of his volatility and, with some work, his fervent desire was to understand himself. He was intent to keep his family. In my country (Canada,) psych work isn't covered by some insurance companies, or at least, not without a doctor's referral. It's pricey to go it alone. I think society is coming to learn that needing psych work is every bit as important as a fever or a broken bone. It should get equal medical attention.

He didn't express desire for therapy, though. The voice clip shows he was using that "offer" to go to therapy as a way to manipulate his victim into accepting more abuse. He was an adult, if he truly wanted to seek out therapy he could have done so at any time. Empathy for people is so very important and is a wonderful thing, but his expressing a desire for therapy was nothing more than an abuse tactic used by abusers across the globe every day.

Came here to say this. There is a word for it: Hoovering. Saying the things they know a victim wants to hear to get themselves back in, typically right when they notice the victim is thinking about leaving. "If I'm at fault myself in any way" tells you already that he didn't believe he was doing wrong. Those cameras weren't for him, either. They were to keep an eye on her. Telling himself he was being targeted allowed him to believe that a. He was doing nothing wrong; b. He was the innocent victim; and c. He was the center of focus of other people's worlds

As much as the term "narcissist" is thrown around as a fancy word, that wouldn't be the most important part IMO. He was not as intelligent as he thought and he simply lost his marbles, thinking the whole world was after him. It's more delusions, coupled with substance abuse A narcissist wouldn't be aiming to die after a rampage. Not if narcissism means among others, extreme selfishness. While it doesn't excuse what he did, some professional psychological treatment would've really helped him

Excellent video as always. As someone who was 15 and in school just outside of Sunderland at the time I vividly remember the communal anxiety while he was at large, along with the repeated warnings we received to remain vigilant. You always do a great job at focusing on the victims, which really helps to distinguish just how abhorrent the actions of people like Raoul truly are. It's really interesting to see your coverage of a case so close to home. Thanks for always putting out such exceptional content!

I remember when this was in the news, but can't recall many of the details, and had been wondering whether this case would be covered by any of the true crime channels I watch. Thank you for covering it!

Longer format is always tricky, however you have nailed the pacing here, and ofc there is always your lovely voice and candence. Another fantastic video.

We are loving the longer video, Adrian, thank you for your extra hard work on this tragic case!!! It's awesome to see Nero too!!! So sad about the victims, can only hope Samantha is as well as possible after this nightmare, it's also so sad about Samantha and Chris - her perfect man!! Thank you again, Adrian, for this longer video and hope Nero is ok!!

I am usually not a fan of longer videos. I like the 20-25 minute stories. However, this story really needed the extra time and I appreciate you giving it the space necessary to develop.

Great job Adrian, possibly the fairest assessment of this case I've seen, I wonder if people actually realise the psychological damage done to a child when they are "rejected" by a parent , self esteem is an essential aspect of every human personality, it's actually what makes us tick as adults and self esteem grows from the love, care and pride that ones parents show, we can tell just how important this is as RM's last words were the wish to have had his father in his life, it was probably an all encompassing sadness for him that neither parent gave him any love and without that love monsters are made.

I loved the longer video this time, I love all of the details you include and that you tell us any info about the people involved from a current/years later aspect. I'm also the type of person who would love it if you did a podcast reading books to fall asleep to, because your voice is so soothing, though, so I'd probably like a longer video time regardless. 😅

Adrian, this was a brilliant review of this case. Being from another country I wasn't familiar with it until it was covered recently by another true crime youtube channel (she is based in the UK ). You provided some really informative details that she didn't cover. She did a great review but yours provided details that were imperative to the case.
