One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is that he was already under suspicion and had been brought in for fingerprinting & DNA because a few of his neighbors had called in and said that he should be looked into in connection with the murder. So I wonder if he would have turned himself in if he wasn't already being looked at.

While I didn't know Austin myself, I ran in the same circles as him and had many mutual friends. Let me tell you, NONE of them were very surprised. This was in my home town. We were all devastated for the loss of Jessica and, as high schoolers ourselves, absolutely disgusted to learn who killed her. It was all we talked about in the halls. We expected some middle age man to be caught as her killer. I was in art class when another student interrupted peer critique "JESSICA RIDGEWAY'S KILLER HAD BEEN CAUGHT!" He read the short statement off his phone and when he said "Austin Sig" my heart dropped. He was one of us. The monster was one of us. This will forever be a core memory for me. Before we knew it was a high schooler that killed her, we used to go out after school to watch the elementary school kids walk home, to keep them safe. After Austin was caught, the parents immediately rejected us. Some acted like it was our fault. This case is close to my heart. It still hurts.
@dawfydd
@dawfydd 2 жыл бұрын
Its true though bullying is at the center of many of these incidents and the adults will place blame onto highschoolers for it but where is the solution to fix it? when will teachers get a decent wage to help children grow, the parents don't want to have to pay more for public school so they are as much to blame for the wackos created by this bad system, they just need somebody else to blame.
@michellementh9651
@michellementh9651 2 жыл бұрын
@@dawfydd What? Are you seriously blaming her mother right now because she didn't take her to school herself? Being a helicopter parent makes kids grow up to be neurotic adults, fearful of everyone. While we should remain vigilant, we should also be able to feel safe in our own neighborhoods. People get abducted within blocks of their homes rather than a mile. It happens all too often and lots of parents can't feasibly take their children to and from school every single day. She was taught to be vigilant, to scream if someone approached her. She may have thought initially that Austin was there to walk with her. Like the OP here said, they watched the younger kids walk to school often to make sure they were safe.

I'm so sorry you and your friends were blamed and ostracized to an extent because of this psychopath. You and your friends did what you could. The tragedy of a terrible crime like this is the impact on the wider community as a whole. Walking to school is something many of us have done and still do in our daily routine. A whole group of kids lost the freedom and ability to experience those simple daily things when he brutally took Jessica's life. Parents worry about their kids being away from them, and kids become scared of living life normally. We become increasingly more insular and scared of being near others for fear of what they "could" do to us. @@terredee Thought nothing to do with the case, two of my colleagues were criminals. One in fact was arrested in the workplace, and another was a rapist. The first male who worked as chef in the kitchen used to play practical jokes on me and ring me and pretend to be someone else. Looking back now, this is kind of weird behaviour. The irony is that we used to laugh together but today I think, perhaps he was manipulating me and targetting me for sadistic reasons. The second one the rapist, 'he was just annoying colleague' but nothing special as many male colleagues can be annoying. Now looking back every male colleague will not be trusted

I live in this community and was in high school when this occurred. The murderer was friends with my older brother back when they were in middle school. This case destroyed our community, but brought us together in a whole different way. I remember exactly where I was when I found out who did it. I was a junior. We weren’t supposed to be on our phones, but we were. We all started seeing the news articles. A girl got up and told our teacher, and she proceeded to write Austin’s name on the board. We were released from school that day and school was cancelled the next. They brought in counselors for us to talk to. My family and countless others met at the local rec center to start the search. They loaded us on school buses to various areas near where she went missing. Daylight to daybreak. Thank you for covering this case. We miss Jessica more than anything. She was a bright, beautiful, and funny child. I still think about the morbidity of this case. I still see purple ribbons hanging around the neighborhood. Chelsea Park has now been renamed to Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park. Lots of purple, as she would love.

I disagree, I left home at seventeen and faced the big bad world, by that age I could cook,laundry clean, sew,iron change nappies ,bottle fee,children and burp them, I raised my sister from the age of nine years old. To many children masquerading as adults in their 20s, 30,40s The world is not a nice place and you a great disservice to a child mollycoddling them, my sister is a casing point. Has everything thing she could have wished for and because of our nine year age gap she got a lot more than I did. I have never been a worry to my mother, I don’t drink, smoke, gamble or take drugs, yes I have suffered from depression so I know about mental health problems but still I never got into any addictions, well chocolate if that’s classed as an addiction, even though she was not a good mother I still have a sense of duty to care for her in her 80s even though there is only a seventeen year age gap. My sister has always been a worry to us, two children out of wedlock and always on social security and holding her hand out for help, now living with another waster and I wash my hands if her Then after everything my mother did for her my sister stopped talking to her and keeps the grandchildren away Unfortunately for my mum I never had kids Tough love is the only way to prepare your children for the world, I know more than most people that it can be a mean place to exist in

My little sister had a childhood friend who lived in that neighborhood. Parents, especially, were effected by her murder. I remember my mom sobbing into my dad’s chest, begging God to find who killed Jessica. Well, they found him. Everyone celebrated - some teachers even dancing on tables in their enthusiasm. I don't exactly think sleeping (in the most innocent way possible of course) with your parent is too odd, not like cuddling or kissing. Happening to be laying close to someone while sleeping isn't sexual, I hope my daughter feels close enough to me to still be affectionate and want to be around me as a teenager. In this case I do feel like maybe they had more going on, his sexual interests as well as the overtly-close relationship with his mom, usually killers who go on to sexually assault victims were molested as a child, kind of gives off vibes like his mom was grooming him his whole life.

Having worked in the prison system, I was what I called, “ The worlds most paranoid mother.” I did not allow my children to ride the bus, walk to the store, go anywhere in the store without me. I didn’t let them go to public restrooms by themselves until they were 9 or ten and the boys always went together. My daughter usually went with me. Total protection is impossible, but I did my best. Seeing children allowed to be where they can’t be observed gives me chills.

Thank you for covering this tragic case. 💜 It reminded me of the Somer Thompson murder. Somer was walking home from school, kidnapped, s.a.'d, killed, and thrown away. There is a local garden in her name, and a memorial tree at a nearby park. Her killer was caught, given life behind bars, and moved due to the severity and notoriety of the case. Like Jessica, Somer's favorite color was purple and the county adorned itself with purple ribbons and balloons in celebration of her life. May Jessica, Somer, and all victims of these tragic cases rest in peace.

Per the prisoner's code/jailhouse code of ethics, he is at the bottom and considered the most loathsome and detestable amongst all convicted criminals. Unless he spends his life in solitary he will live in constant fear of the jailhouse justice that awaits him. No amount of transfers from prison to prison will save him from that.

You are absolutely right. I have worked in corrections for nearly 20 years and I have seen first hand what happens to inmates that harm a child in any way. There could be the worst murderer on the planet but once they find out a child has been hurt or killed they immediately become enemy number 1 and they will get you. I have caught these attacks as they were happening and I have seen only the aftermath. I bet if any sick individual that has the thought of wanting to hurt a child crosses their mind they would change it after seeing some of the things I've seen.

Then she would send him over to us to ask us to take him. It was only a mile and I thought the whole thing was a massive imposition. What could possibly happen in that sleepy neighborhood only a mile away from school? My sister and brother had walked to that same school all by themselves, why couldn't he? Well, this was eye opening. This video left me in tears.

The neighborhood was quiet and calm, no one who lived there would have ever thought this could happen. My son went to the same school, and we lived only blocks away from her at the time. Everyone was looking for her, and it was a massive tragedy for the community when she was found 😞 And Mindy, there was nothing wrong with her behavior in my opinion. Austin had finally found something that he enjoyed and was seemingly doing very well with. As none of the other passionate criminology students murdered anyone, why would his mother think he would do this? To her, he had found a constructive outlet for his morbid curiosities.

I would agree with that. I live in a village and I have to walk on a country lane to the train station on my own and I regularly do that, so I take my bike and change my route regularly. Just being alone where are there are cars in an isolated area increases the risk even in the countryside. Only last week I had a lone male offer me a lift in his car. You are doing a great job being aware of predatory behaviors, just be sure you are talking to your child about predators and the tricks they use to manipulate the vulnerable. It's nice you get to walk her to school but predators are everywhere and you want her to be knowledgeable about following her intuition, what to do if she's approached or touched. Children need to know what to do if something happens when you're not there.
