“Feel the fear and do it anyway” is how I have to live, it’s not a coping mechanism. I’m anxious about all things. Anything from taking my dog out for a walk, or going to the post office. Unfortunately rexposing myself to these things never works because the reason I’m anxious about them is a bad prior experience that could happen again at any time. “Sitting with it” is what I’m always forced to do, and it never goes away. It honestly sounds like he’s addressing the regular anxiety of normal people: aka the kind that really does settle down. Going into an anxious situation for me doesn’t get better the more I expose myself to it...when it’s over I’m just thankful I survived-this time. I’ll have a pounding heart in my throat ready to jump for hours and hours until it’s over. If your anxiety can settle down in 90 minutes, you’re one of the lucky ones.

Emiliaphilia you just nailed in the head, im exactly the same. All videos I see, seem to be addressed to people with just normal anxiety. Mine is on another level, probably like yours, unlucky us
@joesmith3896 жыл бұрын
I am the exact same. It’s like PTSD. Sure, I “survived” the trip to the grocery store, but I felt like my world was spinning and I was going to faint; further pitting that fear in my mind. Exposure therapy works if you do it constantly on an hourly basis only. My “aha” moment was when I accepted that nothing bad can actually happen to me. Anxiety is physically harmless. Once I realized that, and realized that I don’t give a shit who sees me shake or whatever, I was free. I don’t mind what happens (ever) and I don’t care what others think. Surrender to everything, because nothing really matters in the grand scheme of things anyway). Feel that fear without judgment. It’s a blessing. Notice the feelings and move on with your life. They’re harmless. Enjoy them. Those fearful thoughts mean nothing. It’s just chatter. Enjoy every moment of life. Our perception of everything is so exaggerated it’s stupid lol. Watch Wonderbro’s vids to see more. Don’t resist any feelings. Make them come! What we resist will persist. Make them your friends. They can’t hurt you. They can be your greatest teacher. Tell them to bring it on! Soon, you will lose interest in them and they will fade away. It’s the fuel you’re giving them that keeps them around.

It feels good to know im not alone. Everyday events that people seem to do with no thought or worry is like a life threatening event for me. 20 plus years this way and its hard to find any relief. Somedays are bad and thats ok..and somedays are worse. Thats how it goes for me. Until i sleep, get to my bed and home..i dont feel safe. I often wonder why i was cursed with this dissorder?? No one seems to know or care. Good luck guys💗💪. Were stronger just for enduring what we do and not giving up.

Emiliapocalypse You need PTSD therapy Emilia. The “Rewind” technique is a quick highly effective treatment. Whereabouts are you & I’ll put you onto someone? My email is; bradrid@gmail.com I’m in BRIGHTON & Maidstone & offer “Rewind” as a treatment for what’s called “Involuntary recall” which sounds like what you have. And you’re right Emilia the only (but very real drawback) of CBT is that the mind has to be in a calm, settled state in order for it to engage with us & us with it. If your “involuntary recall” is agitating your mind CBT can add to your fear response not reduce it. Once you’ve addressed the involuntary recall you can engage with CBT. My number is 07914 681995 & my name is Bradley Riddell & I’m a registered member on the BACP’s registry of approved Counsellors.

I suffered from almost disabling, "High Anxiety", many years ago. As a type of solution, I tried making appointments with my problems - to stop thinking about them all the time. But when the appointment time came up, I found that my problems didn't seem too serious and that my mind could sort them out (without a lot of suffering). So I knew then, that if I could develop a suitable approach I could eventually overcome my "High Anxiety".

I think that the concepts work. In life the jumping out of a plane example is a good one. The only point in life the plane jump increases in difficultly, so as our experience increases, many times the challenges increase in proportion.

This sounds more like a description of exposure therapy than CBT. Exposure to the feared situation beyond the peak and into the reduction of anxious sensations repeatedly until the ‘body’ (as if it exists independently of the mind) learns not to react the same way. The cognitive part in CBT is the fact that it’s a person’s expectations about the feared situation (their perception of what will happen and how likely they think it is to happen) that results in the triggering of the anxiety response. Not every kid on their first day of school is anxious, not every kid expects it to be a negative experience. Some kids are excited, same as some people when they first publicly speak, or fight a fire or jump out of a plane. Not everyone reacts with anxiety, that is a terrible overgeneralisation. If people learn to identify their expectations (aka beliefs) about what will happen in situations they are fearful of and anxious about they can challenge those expectations in a number of ways. Once those expectations are changed and the person genuinely no longer expects that ‘bad things will happen’, or that bad things may happen but are very unlikely and that in the worst case scenario if they did happen the person could respond and deal/cope, anxiety can be significantly reduced or eliminated.

CBT is not for everyone. What they don’t tell you is how dangerous and pervasive it can be. I was depressed, but still okay going in to CBT. 5 months in and I graduate next week. It’s caused the most severe deep depressive episodes, scary suicidal ideation, and resurfaced childhood trauma. I can’t seem to shake it off, and this weird emptiness tension in my brain is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. I feel like someone knocked the wind out of me and I’m fighting just to breath. I can’t seem to control it either. I’m so scared of the uncertainty I’m actually planning a talk with my family about what to do with my son should my condition continue to deteriorate. Be careful and consider the side effects!!! CBT was the biggest mistake of my life!

Thank you! I really enjoyed your talk because you made it really relatable to every day life and offered very logical steps to help overcome anxiety. And you didn't look nervous at all!
@royspier49715 жыл бұрын
It sounds great. Makes a lot of sense and in many cases is effective. However, It often fails. For example people despite understanding the logic are willing to face the challenge. They know that anxiety will be reduced if they look it in the eye but they avoid doing that. That is where CBT can sometimes be lacking. There is a subconscious reason for the avoidance. There is a hidden reason why someone can't go shopping in a supermarket. In this case treating the symptom will not be enough. Treating the resistance becomes more important. And this also addresses the initiation of the problem. The graphs, though being valid in many cases don't explain how it all started. Yes the person has a false belief (this elevator will plummet now) but this belief wasn't caused by conditioning (once they were in an elevator that nearly fell). It is a part of the complexity of their psyche (their self confidence, self perception, belief that people will help them and many more factors). CBT doesn't address this complexity and therefore may be effective in some cases but will be ineffective in others.

Try not to use distraction therapy though. It only delays the inevitable of facing your fears. Be present and enjoy the beauty of every moment. Every moment, no matter what your made up perception, has beauty. Even death. Practice this and you’re free.

I don't like his use of evolution to explain our ages. Man was created whole and not lacking anything. We were created with all the faculties to start with. Imagine if we had started with all that we have today when man was created from the beginning by God and remained the same without any advancement? Life would have been boring; however when we invent and transform new things, life becomes interesting and worth living; nevertheless that does not mean we evolved. The suit , the microphone, the shoes, the electronic device etc. he is using were all invented and developed by someone however the man who invented all this useful tools himself was not created but evolved? Take the word "evolve" out of your presentation and see how much sense it would make. Say, Our body was CREATED to function like this or that but due to blah blah blah , we do experience anxiety. After all the anxiety lessens or disappears once the body gets used to the stressor. Like the example you gave with jumping out of an aircraft. We are mainly anxious if were not sure of the outcome or developing situation. We don't feel anxious watching a football match that was played the day before and just watching a replay on TV. We already know the outcome. Our body and mind already have the truth of the outcome and doesn't need to be anxious anymore. We cant change the results.

cbt is concerned with prefrontal cortex or the thinking brain. anxiety is concerned with the Amygdala or emotional brain. somatic therapy is preferred in the usa. Also people who have had years of post traumatic stress .older people need some kind of tranquiliser and sleep help. Esp peple who have heart failure. If you haven't experienced this you cant understand how it feels. CBT is useless. I have done over a year.
@scoobydoo5075 жыл бұрын
CBT is effective if applied properly. There is a great amount of research proving its effectiveness. The meaning you attach to any sort of event influences the emotional responses you have to that event. CBT helps you learn to attach more positive meanings to anxiety inducing events. Positive thoughts lead to positive mood. Negative thoughts lead to depression, anxiety, irritability, etc. It's a vicious cycle. CBT is something we can all learn.
