Instead of calling for racial healing and encouraging Americans to remain calm, President Trump's solution is to "dominate" the protestors and send the military to control the streets. #Colbert #StephenAtHome #Monologue

If it soothes your anger, she has been slaughtered by karma: fired from her job, dog reclaimed by animal shelter, national notoriety as a racist animal-abuser, and forever infamous; likely unable to get a job ever again due to her history. There are other things too, investigations for falsifying a police call, and talk of banning her from Central Park for life. Could be more but that's just what I've read so far.

There is one interesting thing when it comes to Germany and racism. Of course, mr. Colbert is right, that we do have racism over here, no intelligent person from Germany would ever doubt that. But it got better and today it is no comparison to the structural racism that lies deep within the America nation from it´s beginning. But I think, the problem lies deeper than that. We, as germans, started two world wars, we planed and executed the shoa. And all that guild will be with us evermore. But there is one thing that we did after that, one thing, that the United States had never done: We admitted, that we we were wrong. All together, not "the Nazis", because, we were the nazis. No-one else but us and almost all of us. I am not. a fan of Germany, and as many germans there is only one political thing, that we are proud of, and that is to talk, act and think antifascist. Because we know, we've done wrong. It's been the biggest lecture for this country to admit that. And it has been a long, hurtful way. So, if Mr. Colbert says, getting called out for racism in Germany is like a Jamaican telling you to put down the bong, he is right. But you can be sure that you would be surrounded by ten germans asking you why. Because many of us learned, that it is a giant leap as a nation to admit, that we were wrong and to ask for forgiveness. But it is the first step for healing.

Very well said, Sir. The first step for progress is acknowledgement, acknowledging that there is something wrong and something can be improved upon. And you put this not only into beautiful words but also in action by the entire nation. Have a good day.

I’m not seeing what is happening in Birmingham being covered nationally. I know it’s a busy news-cycle these days but it is a story worth covering. In Birmingham, Alabama large groups of all races marched and and met in Linn Park. It was peaceful. Then they decided to take down the confederate monuments in the park. One went down but the other was just too large and strong. A little history: Birmingham didn’t exist until long after the civil war was over. The city has tried to remove the monument as the vast majority of residents want. But the state passed a law making it illegal. So the city put a wall around it. The state sued and the city won in court. The state appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court and won. It was sure to be escalated to the US Supreme Court. But last night the mayor came out and promised that if they would stop trying to take it down, he would have it down in 24 hours. Some agreed - some were angry. But as crowds moved through the streets away from the park a lot of damage was done by a very few. The mayor made a strong and angry announcement that included a curfew until further notice. So tonight was to be possibly very eventful. But so far all that’s really happened is that a crane was at the park and the monument is dismantled. And a go-fund-me was set up to pay the fine that will be levied on the city by the state. And in no time they far exceeded the amount needed. Scores of volunteers showed up down town today and started working to repair the damage done to businesses last night. And now the city that is in love with itself and each other has a reason to be proud.

If you can. While some of us are wondering if Trump is getting a head start on burning the country down in spite when he loses, others are expecting that he's trying to make it bad enough so he can declare martial law and postpone/cancel the election. People have caught on video guys in black uniforms leaving pallets of bricks and spray paint on the protest route. Originally it was believed they were cops, but they might be mercenaries working for Betsy DeVos's brother, Erik Prince of Blackwater infamy. Prince has been contracted to do "security" -- aka spying on, infiltrating and trying to start trouble in liberal groups -- by the Trump administration.

Dear Mister Colbert., I was not born here. But as a kid of an US Solider, mixed of race, growing up in Germany, let me ensure you that your comment about Germany is wrong. They do have a horrible past!!! But nowadays noone is marching along tanks on their way to work anymore. They don't raise their right arms to say good morning or to hail anyone. Do we have racists over here? Of course , sadly like any where else. But Germany is not all about that anymore for decades!!! And even if they won't agree with the politicians at least they don't "vote" a criminal racist into the leading job. I am looking up to you, I love your show and that you are using your voice to wake up America (hopefully). I just wanted to make clear that Germany is so much more than Nazis now. And remember, I am black (mixed). Berlin, Hamburg, Fulda, Munich, Kassel, Stuttgart everywhere peacefully protesters last weekend, by the 10.000. I am a HUGE Colbert fan and the wit behind all your politically charged jokes. I am an American living over 20 years in a big city in Germany. As part of the minority community of America, I was deeply hurt, offended and enraged over what happened to George Floyd.I have experienced more racism in my homeland than I have ever experienced here! Racism definitely exists here but most Germans, due to their history and their overwhelming reminder in school of it, live in a constant state of humility almost to a fault und are sometimes even too tolerant. I did NOT appreciate how you portrayed Germany at the beginning of this segment. It makes it look like an otherwise racist nation now protesting against racism. Many Americans are globally ignorant and truly don't know nor understand what is happening beyond its borders. Because I appreciate your intellect and your ability to depict the frailties in American society through humor, I felt the need to make you aware that feeding into yet another common American misconception of the world is beneath you. I hope you understand. - still a very big fan! :)

Here was my take: He used a historical reference of a bad time, then juxtaposed it with images of Germans protesting against racism. He was showing the potential for progress. @Major Thought Ahead If more 'thought ahead' they would have voted for Hillary in 2016 and seen if Bernie or Liz or anyone had managed to build a coalition rather than a half-bot mostly-destructive cult by 2020. We only needed to hold the line and follow through on the Obama stuff last time, but we could not afford to lose. Now we lose... Everything we couldn't afford to for three and a half years running. We're set back decades. And still just trying to control the damage. And Bernie still has no way to get any promise done. And don't get me wrong. I'm very progressive, but neither this nor 2016 were my first rodeo, as they say around here. We couldn't afford to lose the last Presidential against the Republicans in any way. But we did. We're still paying the cost. As is our future. And as is our planet. We can't take more damage to our nation or world and expect somehow a viable civilization will come from the ashes, never mind one we progressives would like. You need to know how systems work, and where they don't.... fix them, don't inflame and further break them. Sometimes it's too much easier to scream 'Revolution' than to really actually educate people, really care for people, really actually embrace those different from you instead of taking the easy route and trying to incite and or use them... But breaking things is easy. For some, it's fun. But fixing them or building them, ....that takes skill and *care* and *work.* And that's not so simple. Or abstract. Capiche? Some things need to be dismantled, but you need to know how it works and how to replace or improve them before you go blowing them up. Civilization is at stake. There just aren't enough allowed to participate in it lately. And that goes for those raised in bigoted ignorance even if they seem to be feeling their power now. THey don't know how to govern or do things either, despite the image they claim.

@@nula14 My pleasure! I also thank you, as a German. It's so important for both parties that the horror of such past events are AT LEAST recognised. That way, the victims have their feelings also validated. And generation after generation, I have always seen Germans express regret, even from actions that weren't even theirs anymore, for example with the younger generations. With Americans, all I have seen was a giant cover-up. I can only wonder what is being thought in American History class. If you (readers of this comment) are white and you still don't see how people of colour feel in America, I also highly recommend watching the Netflix-documentary "13th". There are numerous other examples of documentaries on systemic racism (and that's what makes it so disturbing), but that one really stuck by me.

Bullshit. The whole monologue was about Trump. If after all this time anyone still expects that Trump will give speech to "soothe the nation", they are either a dumbfuck or (more likely) just after high ratings pretending to care about minorities. Colbert is so out of touch he didn't even feel the need to ask the opinion of his lead musician who has a much better idea about how it's like to be a black man in America. The racist joke on Germany was downright offensive, whoever wrote that doesn't deserve the job. This is what separates these "hosts" from Conan. Conan knows his place and what is appropriate for him to say and so he did not spend more than two minutes talking about it or express his feelings and instead asked someone who knew.

Michelle Cusseaux was changing the lock on her home's door. Tamir Rice was playing in a park. Walter Scott was going to an auto-parts store. Bettie Jones answered the door to let Chicago police officers in to help her upstairs neighbor. Philando Castile was driving home from dinner with his girlfriend. Botham Jean was eating ice cream in his living room in Dallas. Atatiana Jefferson was babysitting her nephew at home in Fort Worth Eric Reason was pulling into a parking spot at a local chicken and fish shop. Dominique Clayton was sleeping in her bed. Breonna Taylor was asleep in her bed. And George Floyd was at the grocery store. #SayTheirNames #BlackLivesMatter

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, Stephen. I’m a 74 year old White grandmother living in San Antonio. I marched with Angela Davis in the 60’s and I’d be marching now except for COVID and my lungs. This country ISN’T the kind of place I want to live in yet. The man in the White House has unleashed hatred and made racism seem “okay.” I mean if people hear the president confirm it it MUST be okay. It breaks my old heart. And today when I read that he picked up a Bible and walked to a church I thought Oh No! He’s going to let the reporters think he’s going in to PRAY! But oh NO! Lol HE DIDN’T EVEN GO INSIDE! It was just a PHOTO OP! They just took photos of him in front of the church! I practically fell over! There is NOT a genuine bone in his body! He can’t be real for an instant! He is fake thru and thru. NOTHING THERE! No substance! None! He will subvert anyone and anything for his own purpose, his own ego. I’ve never hated anyone in my life before. But that men, that detestable man in the Oval Office I loathe, detest, despise. Thank you, Stephen, for giving us a hint of the words we so sorely need as a nation. I even longed for W’s words after 9/11. Some weeks ago I listened to The Queen as she spoke to her subjects about coronavirus. I took some solace there. But I LONG for SOMEONE to speak to us as a broken nation. John Lewis: we need you NOW! 🙏🏼

A few things there: A: That's a low bar if I ever saw one B: We are fighting against hard right movements in our politics to this day. It never really stopped. Just in the last 3 years a new hard right party emerged running on Nazi rhetoric (sometimes verbatim) and was elected to many of our states' parliaments, and even our federal government C: Even some "normal" conservatives are at least flirting with the idea of working with that right wing in the future. Luckily our parliamentary elections are direct, so the pushback from the public is felt stronger by the parties on the receiving end and our liberal-left Green Party is gaining traction to counteract that motion, but it's still a struggle.

So... I never comment, but I’m upset that Stephen said racism in the US must be bad if even Germans criticise it... As if he is trying to downplay the American problem by relativising it. It is BAD because this form of violence against black and brown people is currently unparalleled, at least in the Western world, while still being tolerated and defended by some of the members of the white majority. The rest of the world sees this very clearly and is disgusted by the cruel deaths of innocent African Americans, and they expect the United States to do much better. Definitely, racism exists everywhere, but you don’t have to fear for your life because of the colour of your skin everywhere like in the US.

They're not ordinary people from the 1840s, you know. They separated themselves from the general society because of its depraved, immoral habits. They didn't approve of how our ancestors (that's yours and mine, no theirs) were exploiting slave labor, murdering Native Americans, committing domestic violence and numbing their consciences with gigantic quantities of whiskey. Every thirty years or so, they stick their heads out: 1870: "Okay, they've abolished slavery, but they're still drinking whiskey like it was water, beating their wives like drums and murdering Indians." 1900: "Still drinking whiskey, maybe not as much. Taking a lot of opium. Still beating their wives. Only quit killing Indians because they ran out of them. And for the love of God, don't eat this stuff they call 'canned meat' . . . ." 1930: "They definitely beat their wives less, but now they make them work in offices. They made whiskey illegal, but they're drinking more of it than ever, and they have something worse than whiskey and opium put together. Cathy Weiss You are right! I noticed that too. What a disgusting woman ! She needs to be put in Bellevue Psych Hospital. The man did nothing wrong. Dogs were legally required to be leashed, and he asked politely. I am SO glad nothing bad happened to Mr Cooper. She gets herself so energized by her racism that she can barely speak and is swinging the dog by the neck using its collar (an apostrophe between the “t” and the “s” means “it is”). In my opinion it is perfectly correct that she was fired, and the dog was removed from her as well. The next day she issued an apology but for me it is “too little too late “. If something had happened to Mr Cooper, she would have been guilty of causing any injuries or death that might have happened to Mr Cooper. She is a really disgusting example of an uneducated, privileged white bigot.

As a German I completely agree Germany is not free of racism. But making it the subject of a stupid Nazi Germany joke in context is pretty low-brow, even for the Colbert joke authors. Please consider for the future how much you want to root around in the past for joke subjects. It might bite you on the rear harder than you like. Please consider that Germany's current constitution contains human dignity as its first, inviolable article. While the US constituion contains some basic human rights that have to be defined by being a US citizen. As such these rights do not apply to ALL humans, just to US citizens. Isn't that something to think about?

That joke is hilariously ignorant. If I (born in Munich, a former temporary New York resident, Berliner since 1990) didn't now better, I'd say: See? The ignorant American again. We know the type! But I do know better. There are plenty of curious, substantially interested, cultivated Americans. Still, I am sincerely p****d at those never-ending Germany-equals-Nazis and/or look-how-harsh-and-always-screaming-that-German-language-is jokes. As RustyDust101 said, that's gonna bite sooner or later your a**, folks. That's when a critical mass of those who understand the stupidity degree of those remarks is reached; remarks by people that have just watched way too many Hollywood Nazi movies and read way to little history books. I look forward to the moment when the audience has changed and goes WTF? on a large scale degree. I also hope I'll one day witness debates on topics like the comparison of constitutions (and the way they are lived by respective societys), as RustyDust101 proposed. Maybe one day there is even a considerable amount of Americans that knows that Germany had its first democratic revolution in 1848 (failed, alas) - at a time when the US genocide against Native Americans was in full swing, while the US's economic growth was still based of the exploitation of slaves, in full swing that one too. The second German democratic revolution then, 1919, duration: five days altogether; successful. And the third one, 1989, in East Germany. VERY successful that one. Those events are very much part of our history and our culture. They might explain much of the obvious stability of the post-1945 German democracy, couldn't they? Maybe one day enough people will come to know and understand why contemporary Germany, compared to other larger European nations - like France, Italy, the UK, Poland - constantly has the lowest nationalist/populist election results within the last decades. And also, why historic Germany had 12 years of fascism while Italy (21 years) and Spain (39 years) started much earlier, and had it much longer. Until then, I laugh at you, the ignorants. Excuse me, I can't help it.

So many illegal acts by the police against aboriginals but the one I remember most was some aboriginal people being detained in a patty wagon and that vehicle being left in the scorching heat until death (08) . I saw a white 10 yr old call an Aboriginal the N word, more than once. I saw people drive their cars past aboriginals and yell ' I'm not bloody sorry'. Or to claim you can do whatever you want and blame someone else when it goes wrong. Or to attempt to bribe a foreign government just for the announcement of an investigation so you can personally attack another person. Or serve at the whim of your adversary while disillusioning the people who were your allies. It's actually a point of admiration the world has for Germany. They were at the epicenter of a catastrophic piece of human history, but not only did Germany manage to gradually move past it, it managed to heal itself AND used it as a means to grow. We always pay attention to the awful shit the regime did back then, but we often overlook just how many of their own countrymen were tormented, trodden upon and executed. It's for that reason that I look at the patterns shown in current events, and the words of the Tronald Dump, and just get a cold shiver. If not for the sheer number of people who can still see the bullshit for what it is, I dread to think what kind of changes he would enforce, or what kind of foreign action he might be tempted to try.

I'm a Minnesnowtan. I live here blocks from where riots broke out. I heard the screams of "I can't breathe !" A lot of stuff has happened in the days since George died. Looting took place in places all over Minneapolis and St. Paul, many of it done by people from out of state, a precinct was set abalze, as well as a few other buildings. Yesterday, while protesting on Highway I-35W a trucker in his 18 wheeler drove into the crowd. No one knows how he got into it because there were barricades for miles. I could go on. But what has also happened is that hundreds of people showed up the next day, including myself, to clean and clear away the debris. Grocery stores were forced to close so people got together and made the parking lot of Sanford Middle School a place to donate bags of groceries. That also happened downtown Minneapolis. Although yes I agree a lot of people have gone too far, and I also believe there are agencies at work that are NOT local people, I am proud of the stand (or kneeling, sitting, or lying on our stomachs with our hands behind our back) we took to say we're literally not going to take it anymore. Peaceful protests are still occuring, the cities are on curfew. Thank you, Stephen, for showcasing the commander in tweets real face during this crisis. The brother of George said he spoke with Trump on the phone. Well, he tried to. He said Trump wouldn't let him speak, and was generally disinterested in anything he had to say......Change is coming. A bigger man might have used this opportunity to start healing the rift in the country. Make no mistake, when Trump leaves his supporters will only grow angrier that their values and beliefs are not represented by the national media. Instead they are ridiculed.

*Guys, if wanna change things as they are, vote! And don't only vote blue, vote for progressives!* Corporate Democrats (the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Biden, Chuck Schumer, Obama, etc.) have been in politics for decades, and they did nothing! They are part of the problem! Since they are/have been corrupt, they couldn't do the reforms that would have been necessary! We need more fresh politicians who didn't sell themselves to the wealthy (the likes of AOC, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib)! As long as the corrupt remain in power, nothing is ever gonna change! The corporate Democrats and the Republikkkans stand for the Status Quo! That's why they must go! Get educated who's running in your state, and if there is a progressive, vote for the person! Nancy Pelosi, for example, is up for reelection this year, and against her is a progressive running (a man with the name Shahid Buttar), who is fighting for Medicare for all and who's fighting against corruption! Vote for him and support him! If we want more justice and more equality for all, we have to change fundamentally! And that can only happen, if we replace the corrupt who exclusively serve the wealthy (the Trumps, the Pelosis, the McConnells, the Schumers, the Clintons, the Obamas, the Bushs, the Cruzs, etc.) with progressives, who serve all Americans!

Ard pursued Steen in his police cruiser going the wrong way on a four lane highway (causing danger to others) and attempted to fire a Taser weapon from the window of the moving cruiser.[1] The chase ended when Steen was struck by the cruiser and dragged until the cruiser came to a stop at a median in an empty parking lot at the corner of Cervantes and R Streets. I am glad, that the late show hosts step up to the occasion and do some serious and thoughtful monologues like you and James Cordon. I am a fan of your show for years now. You bring some sanity and relief to the insane times we live in. I also happen to be a german. Personally I do not feel offended by the cheap shot in your monolgue. I think it was a cultural/historic joke that forced it's way into the monolugue because of the historical context. I think Germany has done quite well with aknowledging what horrors we have done in the past. The education system makes it pretty obvious that we do want to avoid the haunting errors from the past. We learn how racism evolves and what it can lead to, if the good majority of people are standing idle by doing nothing. All what evil needs to succeed is that good people stand idle by doing nothing. Freedom is taken from us not in a giant leap but in small steps until you notice it is too late to turn back the wheel. Therefore it is of upmost importance to speak up and protest while you still can make a difference. Trump and his nationalists are eroding the freedom of the people gradually. So it is important to speak up now and it seems already bleakly late in the process. As I said....I get why the german reference was so tempting to use. I personally do not make a fuss about it, I rather try to teach my kids being better human beings by leading through a hopefully good example of tolerance and open-mindedness. But reinforcing old stereotypes might cement pop-cultural-images in some futile minds that I feel are no longer true. I think Germany tries hard to educate it's citizen to be compassionate and welcoming. There is no place for racism in our society, although it of course exists like in every country. But thankfully the majority is not like that. I do not judge people by gender, skin-color, belief or sexual orientation. I judge people for what they do and say. Your president does not fare well in my personal scoring book and a lot of u.s.-citizens do not fare too well either. I know, the majority did not vote for Trump. But it is this majority that stands idle by and morn that their country is taken from them step by step. It is upon you all, to proove that you are better than that. Instead you let the racist minority erode the great potential of what this nation could be. The nation has lost moral leadership long ago. You dwell in glorified memories from the past. But you live in the now and here. Try to act in the now and here. 2016 is already over. If decent american citizens are bystanders while their country gets taken from them, they might find that social collapse is inevitable. Each passing day makes the cost of change for the better more expensive. So it is better to act while you still have the power of the people: "A republic.....if we manage to keep it." As your founding fathers stated. We can't do it for you, but we hope you succeed. Rest in Peace George Floyd.
