Bernadette Peters as ‘The Witch’ in “Into the Woods” was absolutely spectacular. I remember watching that on PBS as a kid and just losing my mind over how incredible she was. Everyone in that original cast was just perfect. But Ms. Peters is an absolute treasure.

yeah she broke the mold for anyone else in that role, for sure
@jochenstossberg54279 ай бұрын
Meryl Streep in my opinion, was better. She's a brilliant actress - and that matters in this show.
@Prizzlesticks9 ай бұрын
@@jochenstossberg5427 It's a good thing I'm a-okay with other people having different opinions. (◡‿◡✿) For the record, and as I said in my comment, I love Meryl Streep. She's a fantastic actress. Whether she has me rolling with laughter in Death Becomes Her, or actually almost liking Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, she's undeniably brimming with talent. And her work in Into The Woods is not bad. That movie adaptation as a whole is ...awful ... But that's not because she was bad. Heck, most of the cast is incredibly good, the play was just so mangled, it's hard to tell what is bad acting, bad rewriting, bad directing, or bad post-production... That being said, the role was explicitly written with Peters in mind, so it's natural to for her to feel the most organic in the role as it's intended. The movie version of The Witch is not exactly the same character, and the world she exists in is not quite the same world. Somehow, in trying to erase the darkest parts of the play, they've washed out most the humour. And, they've really changed the witch's storyline. Feel free to skip this, I just gotta rant now. In the play, Rapunzel winds up with pretty severe PTSD, on top of being overstimulated after a life spent isolated in a tower. So the witch definitely messed up. However, she was also somewhat right. Rapunzel's prince cheats on her with Snow White while she's at home with twins having panic attacks. In the end, she's crushed by a giant after fleeing from the Prince and the Witch both in another episode of panic. Ultimately, while her methods are wrong, the witch acts out of a place of realistic fear of the world taken to unrealistic extremes, and she loses Rapunzel in the most tragic end possible--a terrible example of self-fulfilling prophecy. So she's already lost everything important to her when Last Midnight begins. The entire song is built around her character's morals and themes and is as much a condemnation of her own failures as it is of the rest of the casts', hurtling towards her epic end, caused ultimately by her own fatal flaws. But the main message is 'who's to blame' doesn't matter--what matters is fixing it. Rather than participate in a witch hunt, her final act, with nothing left she really cares for, is to metaphorically burn herself at the stake so the others will either knock it off and fix it, or get what they deserve. It's brilliant. By giving Rapunzel a happy end and removing most of their relationship, it not only weakens Stay With Me, Lament, and Children Will Listen, it makes The Witch seem more like a butthurt sociopath than a grieving mother in Last Midnight. It also makes her role as a voice of reason in Act II moot, because if there's any chance of her reconnecting with her daughter, she's not going to literally throw herself to a giant for no reason. In the play, she has literally lost everything. In the movie, it's kind of a weird choice that completely contradicts her whole story. So anyway. It's hard to say whether I'd like Meryl Streep as The Witch, because she didn't play The Witch, as far as I'm concerned. Whatever character she did portray was fine, but I think she was hindered more by bad writing decisions than anything else. Unfortunately, Sondheim writes very deliberately and intricately, building songs and narratives that seem suspiciously simple ...until one small thing is changed sends it all crashing like dominos. ┐(´∀`)┌

SAMZIRRA Yeah, there’s no guarantee it’ll be any good, though. And not to be a downer, but if anything it’s guaranteed to not have the budget the old one had, won’t be hand animated like the old show, nor have a 35-piece orchestra score the music, because cartoon shows don’t get that kind of budget anymore (and it was a comparatively expensive show even back then). Heck, we don’t even know if the old staff and actors would be working on it (and my guess would be: probably not). It’s just wishful thinking on my part.

By over 16 years. On February 28, in 3 weeks plus 2 days, she will turn 70 young, with no suggestion of her age and her appearance having crossed paths for decades. On May 13, Coal Bear will turn 54 (relatively) gnarly grizzled years old, continuing to settle into his potty mouth John Chancellor persona. Assuming that Coal Bear first watched on Broadway in 1984, which is when she headlined with Mandy Patinkin in Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George (for which performance she received her by then THIRD Tony Award nomination, at that time, Miz Peters was 36, Coal Bert 20. By 20, Miz Peters had already received the Theatre World Award, which goes to the most outstanding DEBUT performance on Broadway, playing the part of Josie, sister to George M. Cohan in the original production of George M!, based on some of the life and times of the then-legendary Broadway performer. Cohan himself was played by Joel Grey, then 36 (from Cleveland! and still alive at 85! as dancers so often live long), best known for his role as M.C. in the movie version of Cabaret, and BTW father of film star / dancer Jennifer Grey. Despite that George M! was mostly panned by critics, it won awards not just for Miz Peters, but a Tony for Joel Grey for best performance and another for best choreography (among other awards centering on its dancing and music). So Miz Peters essentially had conquered Broadway by the time Coal Bear first watched her on stage, and was by that time the same age Joel Grey was when she debuted with him. I cannot believe it's taken this long for her to come onto Coal Bear's show, nor that they failed to do some music and dance number together. I expect this to happen the next time - get right on it, Mister Music Jon Batiste!

One day many years ago when I was a background actor in Los Angeles, i was a stand-in on the television show, Ally McBeal for Peter MacNicol. This show was filmed at raleigh studios in manhattan beach california. It required a long drive on the 405 freeway. And you never knew when the 405 was gonna be clogged up But it was best To assume it was always going to be clogged up all the time. So I got there at least an hour before call time. I was the only person waiting in the waiting room until a lady showed up who I did not recognize at first. She had the most amazing smile and she did smile with me before she went to her book or whatever she was doing that early in the morning. And it was only a few moments later I realized I was sitting next to Bernadette Peters. Right next to her in the next chair. No one else showed up for at least thirty minutes. 30 minutes alone With Bernadette Peters. I did not say anything. Because it was not my job to say anything. You never forget moments like that.

Especially her exquisite SKIN that had me do a triple take from right next table to hers right after a show. This was during the LEGENDARY original run of Into The Woods .. cocktail / dinner hour. I had to restrain myself from prostrating myself ... kept eyeing her glistening skin. Now, I was in my VERY prime of beauty at 22. I am Korean, with that so called "glass skin" that keeps getting mentined around me. I was bowled over by her beauty and magic. Basically. Yep. Oh, gosh, I so love Stephen and Bernadette. My idols.

OMG I had such a crush on her when I was younger. She is still so gorgeous all of these years later.
