The intervention ended that Civil War, and caused 72 civilian deaths. They didn't land troops, they just send 260 aircrafts and 20 ships. Ukraine was invaded by 100 thousands of Russian troops, and already caused tens of thousands of civilian deaths, all because of Putins irredentist views. He falsely claimed Ukraine was governed by neo-Nazis in an attempt to justify his invasion. The Russians have been accused of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court. Oliver Stone - one of the all time greats. I'm sure that documentary is a work of art as everything this man has done is. It's a bit strange to see the US public behave in this way - but there's been an uninterrupted decline in quality of education and public information over the decades, especially after the USSR demise. In a way - the way the US public is responding to a civil and demanding discourse about the complex and sophisticated current affairs is a stark reminder of the USSR public "reactions" to the same thing during the heights of the USSR. Funny how things change. To paraphrase... "who won? who lost? it's a funny game, man... it changes all the time"

So interviewing the leader of one of the most powerful countries and making a movie about it is propaganda? I think it's quite the opposite.. I would've been more satisfied, if Oliver Stone had chosen another show to talk about his film..
@mistym0rning7 жыл бұрын
Interviewing the leader of a country and making a film about it is not propaganda. No one is saying that (at least Colbert certainly isn't). But interviewing the leader of a country who has a history of human rights abuses, suppression of democracy and freedom of the press etc *without* challenging him much or pressing him on some of these issues and past behaviors does make it seem like it's just an opportunity for Putin to portray himself as a sympathetic character without being challenged very much. I'm sure Oliver Stone had no intention of making a biased film (either positive or negative) about Putin, but if he found him so likeable and respects the guy it seems he's unable to see some of the darker aspects of this man's leadership style and call him out on it.

@@mistym0rning BS. Doesn't matter do you like him or not, he is a head of the country with more than 140 million citizens and must be treated respectfully by this fact already. It's just normal civilized people behaviour. USA has huge proved history of racism, mass shootings, "war drugs" failures and non sanctioned wars abroad "for the name of democracy" etc. I don't hear any American present being asked about it not only with pressure, but just asked. No double standards please. If you put pressure of your own looks while interviewing somebody, you simply don't have a chance to hear their point and loose time. Interviewer is the person who can listen first and then to ask, just to make person know what part of their opinion is more interesting for the audience. Mr. Stone is professional. That's it.

If you asked an American about one thing Russia has done that is bad.. i bet you most American's can't even name one thing. It's just tacitly accepted in our society that Russia is bad. It's strange. Anybody who dares to question why don't we improve our relationship is immediately dismissed as an enemy of America. American's have been brainwashed into an imperialistic state of mind. They have fully bought into American exceptionalism. I say that knowing full well that Russia is guilty of bad actions.. But I am more disturbed by how we behave here.

I watched this entire episode as I usually do but made sure to see the Oliver Stone interview that seemed like it wasn't even going to happen because of how there was no time left. I have to say that this interview was very odd to watch! It seemed that right from the start Stephen set a tone to undermine Oliver Stone as either being not legit or a Putin support which would mean anti American. This being even more evident with the odd groans from the audience that played out. I have to say that this interview seemed more like the old Colbert from Comedy Central; the interview is how I would see Bill O'Reilly giving it. I would hope that if you got Stone to come on again you would be a little bit more neutral in tone and let him say what he needs to say.

It is the first time that I've seen this interview, and before I do an in-depth research on the movie and Mr. Oliver, I'd like to say that I found him to be astute and considerate of his words and posture. I don't think people realise that being considerate and respect is something we all should have towards one another (even when disagreeing), more so when speaking with the head of a country! Now, I admit that personally, I would find it hard to keep such a calm demeanour as Mr Oliver did if I were to interview Mr. Trump, simply because of the image he displays (way of expression, body language, blatant disregard and disrespect even for those against his points of view), notwithstanding his policies and/or actions. However, when the parties share a mutual professional demeanour, it becomes a whole different ballgame, which I think was the case of Mr. Oliver interviewing Putin, as he said: "he respected me and he respected my work". It's not sugarcoating, or being a sell-out, it simply shows you are an educated person with good manners. (Please don't use pitchforks when coming after me)

I find it interesting when people with a little more nuanced understanding of the US role in the world get this kind of reaction, even when it comes from liberal standpoints, such as Chomsky or Oliver Stone, in this case. It was funny when Trump answered "what, do you think we are so innocent?" when answering to Bill O'Reilly's accusations on Putin. As a 'liberal' myself, I was with Trump on that one. Maybe the only time. Doesn't make you think that when public figures, technically opposing to each other, (such as Colbert and O'Reilly) agree on this Manichaeism, on this definite, devilish enemy, something is wrong? There are really the good and the bad, and that's it? Putin is no saint by any means.. but then again, what is Saudi Arabia? I truly appreciate the US, but what did Washington done to my country (Brazil) from 1964 to 1985? I don't think most Americans know.

Oh yeah, this is so less talked about considering US's recent exploits, that I didn't even remember that Brazil too was a victim of a never ending list of coup d'état's arranged/supported by US. Funny thing is in this case so called Liberators of Peace and Democracy supported a military coup leading to a dictatorship with no consequences (as obviously they didn't go there just preferred to grow their weapons market by supplying more and more of them). Sometime I feel like actual reason for 2nd Amendment was to grow their economy by bolstering these companies

I was a fan of Colbert, and Oliver and Stewart, and needless to comment on the others, but this show is little more than insulting to the work of 2 years dismissed on a bad joke, throwing cheap blows of semantics on a a guest. I mean, Colbert has always had his awkward sense of humor that we can see in his interview with Eminem, but this was mean spirited and biased to the limit, and detached from the situation of the world. He (Putin) pulled Russia from the debris of the fallen Soviet Union, restored the country into a global power and saved Crimea with a political referendum and without a genocide a la US, he prevented the complete destruction of Syria, like it happened with Libya, and Irak, and Putin still is open to dialog and this Colbert , being now a propagandists, decides to make fun of a serious situation that can have an impact on so many people, because he wants to feel funny.

It's been genuinely disgusting seeing how American mainstream media behaves in terms of articles, news reporting, and interviews. The amount of disrespect on the part of the journalists/interviewers has been disenchanting, to say the least. Coming from Eastern Europe, I expected a free, respectful press - what I found was worse than in my own country, which is not exactly famous for its freedom of speech conditions.

Here's the thing, Stephen Colbert was more respectful of Trump when he was on the show, he treated him like a child, than he was of Oliver Stone. Anyone who's done their research on the Cuba Missile Crisis, the Cold War, WW1 & 2 and what is going on RIGHT NOW will find the Putin Interviews extremely interesting. They date from 2015 to Feb 2017, so you get Putin's response to the outcome of the US Elections. I think Stephen's shitty attitude towards Oliver Stone was an attempt to discredit him and the interviews because the Putin Interviews shed A LOT of light on MANY things and like I said if you've done your homework, played some serious Chess in your lifetime you know what Putin has to say is pretty much accurate, even his supposition... Stephen Colbert once again showed himself to be the classless piece of shit he's become while Oliver Stone maintained the high ground with poise and grace

As a European (Polish to be exact) it really bothers me how easily the society is manipulated. I can relate this to my own country where it is perfectly enough for half of the nation to make a stiff opinion based on JUST one mainstream media source. I believe that to make a decent opinion you need to consider the arguments coming from both sides. It really bothers me how they laugh when Mr. Stone is trying to express his own views. What more can I say... my high school teacher used to say that it is the domain of stupid people to ridicule things they don't understand. Ps. Apologies if my English is bad. That got tense. This is an unfortunate interview. I value what Oliver Stone does with his interviews and his documentary work, even though I sometimes don't agree with it (as a Colombian, I disagree with his positive image about Hugo Chavez), however, Mr. Stone is absolutely right here, Stone as as interviewer and documentary filmmaker cannot go to Putin and insult him with questions, like he said, he has to be polite.
@lorrainepaul59282 жыл бұрын
I think Americans have long become inured to 'polite and respectful' and only view such attributes as weakness. Look at the posturing of Biden towards China. " "If you don't do what we say there will be consequences." Good heavens if even my neighbour said similar to that to me and my family, I would give him a rather impolite answer, what he/they could do with their threats.
