"Cold" Air Intake Mercedes E Class W212

This mod was done on a 2011 Mercedes E Class W212 E300 with M272 engine.
Was very disappointed in the sound difference of the cold air intake setup since the induction noise only comes above 4000 RPM. Might go back to factory setup once winter is over.
The size of the intake outlet from the air box is 80mm but I actually used a 3.5" intake and aluminum pipe with an 80mm to 89mm silicon reducer hose (3.5"=89mm) since the 80mm isn't as common of a size as the 3" or 3.5" for aftermarket intakes.

When driving at speed, ambient air will be flowing through the engine bay. He won’t be sucking any hot air above 30mph. What he did wrong was not seal the intake boxes

I can't imagine letting my engine get to this point, If it did, I'd be washing it before anyone had a chance to see. My 04 Jeep WJ is like brand new compared to this.

That installation is not cold air. The original design is pretty cold already as it scope air face on. What you modified pulls air in the engine bay, which is hot air.

@@Swervv092 yes but he is a scientist so he means it wont take 100% outside air, now it will take about 70% from outaide thru the ram air and 30% warm from inside the engine bay.. im sure the scientist means that

during hot summer days engine compartment is extremely hot on jeep WK with same engine. so this is not a good idea in terms of intake air volume.

I was wondering how this would increase sound. Whether it is pulling cold or not… isn’t this creating more restriction to airflow with the additional filter vs the factory which is just a hollow piece of plastic tube.

better to use stock system and just connect a hose from your cabin AC under dash box to your air engine intakes before the filters of course for a true cold air intake

I was thinking of doing this on a w207 e550 primarily for sound purposes im sure whatever performance gain or loss is minimal with this. But is the sound quality good?

Sound starts very quiet compared to my other cars and mainly hear it over 3K RPM but I would say still worth it. I have the factory filters now on for summer due to the weekly sandstorms I get and I do miss the sounds. But since you have a bigger engine your results my differ.

I have the M278 4.7L Twin Turbo but on the cabriolet. I would *not* recommend doing this. If you must have an increase in intake sound just replace the OEM filters with say K&N. Keep them in the stock location, however. Exposed filters in engine compartment are, regardless of air flow/ ducting, a bad idea. On the same vein (and I realise this was not your question), I would look at a full exhaust or, failing that, a muffler delete/ gutting. The V8 engines, both NA and Turbocharged have great potential for exhaust note improvement. Be aware that with filters you will only affect intake noise under load, not overall exhaust note and all the independent testing I have come across concludes that filtration (and therefore engine life) is always at least marginally reduced. >> Not worth it IMO.

It sounds very good, but is it good for the engine? Do you have any engine lights after installing?

Is it better for the engine? I don't think so. Is it bad for the engine? most probably. No, I didn't get any engine lights. If its going to harm anything I believe it will happen over a long time like damaging the MAF sensor. I will be putting back the stock filter since I'm not happy with the noise increase, its not load enough.

Delete the mufflers for more sound but these cold air intake will decrease horsepower sucking in hot air making the engine work harder.

I’m no mechanic by any means but I can assure you this is a downgrade. Not only are you exposing heat from the engine, you also limit the actual intake of air. Additionally to making your engine work harder, you would also need to upgrade your exhaust and likely tune the car to see any really improvements from intake. I suggest upgrade the air filters to K&N and prioritize the exhaust before considering this. Still looking for a good exhaust for my W212 AMG coupe. Stock r nice but want a little more rumbles and pop when turbo kicks in.

Ive been also thinking about cutting a grill into the hood like you mentioned but just to get that extra air flow im not sure if ill take that route tho. Also kinda worried if it would look a bit much.

We get weekly sand/dust storms, this is actually cleaner than your average engine bay around my area since it was cleaned a month prior.

@@vanism1974 Good question, I only have these filters during the winter months and put the OE filters back on during summer. The main thing that changes my MPG is the outside temp and how much I use the AC, those filters don't have any noticeable effect on the MPG in comparison to the AC use and outside temp. I get 21MPG during summer and 25 during winter of mainly congested highway use.

Bad idea..... Merc engines already run on the hot side for effieciency.. This mod makes it run even hotter...... OK you get a bit more intake noise, but less power and increase in engine wear as it will run hotter..... Oil gets even thinner therfore less protection....... Leave it as originally designed.

it's not about getting fresh air. it's about the temperature of the air. the air intakes are close towards air being pulled from outside, sure. but, originally, it was a more sealed system. that air intake will also be pulling in hot air from the giant metal hot thing it is near... this seem like it was better stock. sealed air flow coming from outside where it will be cooler than the air in the engine bay.

There are filters with oil and without, this one is with out. Although I'm thinking of getting an oiled one soon. The oil wouldn't damage the engine but there is a chance it will damage your MAF sensor. If oil getting into the engine is a concern then the oil separator on those engines would be a bigger concern since they damage the intake manifold.

Well, this isn't a Porsche. It would be obtuse to believe that all intakes are designed as efficient as a rear engine air cooled Porsche running on a dyno. Granted, sucking in hot from the engine bay isn't ideal, it still may improve performance depending on the vehicle. In the vehicle, yes the intake pipe is large 80mm BUT the inlet that draws in cold air is really small, approx 1.5"w x 2.5"h. I forget the surface area but its like sticking a straw in a garden hose. Without hard data, it's impossible to know which is better. More hotter air or less colder. For + or - 5hp does it really matter?
