The Pub rock scene in Aus in the late 70’s early 80’s was absolute fire. If a band could not capture the crowd they didn’t get gigs. Bands like Chisel and AC/DC learnt how to entertain as well as being great musically as well. They played live night after night and honed the craft. For me Chisel were the best band live. How I miss those Friday nights, not the mornings after with your ears ringing and head pounding thinking never again only to do it again Saturday night 😂😂🎉

And that is why Jimmy Barnes or Barnsey as he is affectionately known is my number 1 artist. He may not be the lead on every Chisel song, but he always adds the falsetto when Ian Moss sings. He’s been in the industry as a teenager and at 67 is still rocking it. He has sung with many artists before including Sam Moore, Tina Turner, played with Joe Bonamossa, INXS, John Farnham and so many more. He took over singing in a band called Fraternity from Bon Scott of AC/DC fame, before he joined Ian Moss, Don Walker and Steve Prestwich in the band Orange, who later changed their name to Cold Chisel. It was before I can remember, but I believe that was at the suggestion of Jimmy’s older brother Swanee when he joined Fraternity. This link shows Fraternity winning a Battle of the Bands competition in 1971, back when Bon was their lead singer, and he plays the recorder of all things. The other bands include Jeff St John and Darryl Braithwaite in the band Sherbert, who’ve all had hit singles…kzbin.info/www/bejne/n33LfayIh8hnbbs

Jimmy Barnes was always the lead vocalist but Ian Moss did a few songs on vocals as well. Jimmy Barnes also went on to have a huge long solo career with loads of hits well worth listening to. He was also given a call by Eddie Van Halen to join Van Halen but knocked it back which then Sammy Hagar took it on.bthanks for the reaction

I see this performance as primarily a duet between Barnsey’s voice and Mossy’s guitar. The whole band is so tight, but those two steal the show. Cold Chisel was blessed with abundance to have both Barnes and Moss with star quality lead vocals. Some songs they duet, other songs they swap who is lead and who provides a back up or comes in later to provide extra texture. There’s a lot of blues/soul influence while some songs are just pure hard rock. Breakfast At Sweethearts even has some Jamaican. If you are a guitar guy you need to hear Barnes collaborate with Joe Bonamassa on “Stone Cold” But if you’re surprised by Barne’s range in singing style, you would probably love John Farnham, who also duetted with Barnes a lot over their careers. Starter song has to be a live version (but not the Aria awards) of the two of them singing “When Something is Wrong With My Baby”, with Johnny Diesel on Lead Guitar and ending a capella harmonies. Then John Farnham doing Led Zepplin’s Black Dog as a mic check with his band, not meant to be recorded and never sung in concert , but a sound guy hit record on one of the mic checks. Then John Farnham doing Granada with Anthony Warlow to blow your mind with Farnsey’s range. Farnsey’s version of AC/DC’s It’s a Long Way To The Top, with the Melbourne symphony orchestra blows the roof off the stadium. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Farnham Concert has an extremely varied list of absolute bangers, from the sweet and haunting “One”, and “Help” (Beatles) to You’re The Voice and “Long Way…” Barnsley shows off his high notes in live “Chandelier” by Sia, with haunting lyrics knowing about Barnsey’s alcoholism and struggling to get sober. Returning to Chisel, the earlier, shorter version of Jaenalle is great, and you have to find both Chisel and Farnham’s versions of “When The War Is Over”. You need a lyric sheet to follow what Barnsey sings in Khe San - about a Vietnam Vet with PTSD who can’t fit back into society after the war. It’s not an easy song to like on first listen, but that outro hook sinks deep and the more you play it the more it slaps hard.

AC/DC were playing in Sydney pubs early 70s and beyond. Cold Chisel came to Sydney from Adelaide. I think the first time I saw them was late 1980 and then many times until they split in 83.

They started in Adelaide pubs and used to sing in bikie pubs and if brawl broke out he'd be in their sharing it around Jimmy probably knocked off a couple of bottles of spirits before performing Jimmy and Ian where both lead singer's Jimmy left later on to go solo and Ian keep band going and Jimmy would come back and forth If you what to listen to him in he's 50s look this up Jimmy barnes and Joe bonamassa Stone cold amazing vocals and two amazing guitar solo's Jimmy's still singing today had to postpone he's concert tour to have hip operation which he's recovering from but will be back soon Cheers mate his 1 of two ledgens of their era and as popular today

It is great, isn't it? If ever a band captured the essence of a song ,.... As said below, the pub scene was awesome back then. There were so many good bands. If you couldn't perform you couldn't get the gigs and about the only way to get a recording contract was to develop a following from your live shows. This performance of Wild Thing was exceptional but not too much out of the ordinary, I was fortunate enough to see almost every one of the top bands live in a smaller venue with crowds of 50-250 people. Imagine, if you can, what it was like to see a performance like that in such a venue. The atmosphere and energy was amazing, Looking back, we didn't know how lucky we were. We could go out almost any night of the week and catch a great act.

When this band got going Ian Moss was the lead singer and guitarist extraordinaire. When Jimmy Barnes was 16,1/2, he came along and joined in as the other lead singer. Mossy wrote Bow river so took the lead, Barnsey did a lot of leads as well. Barnsey wrote you've got nothin' I want after the US record execs were nasty to him, so he told them off. Other band members were also song writers. When they broke up, it was at their peak, they were worried about giving the fans less quality. Barnsey put out his Soul Deep solo album. Mossy did Telephone booth, Tucker's daughter etc... you should hear him do Georgia live in their last concert. They did reform later a few times. It's all about the music. Jimmy was born in scotland, grew up in Oz, messed up kid. He used to drink A lot in earlier years. PAUL hogan was commanded to say shrimp on the Barbie, to get the usa on side. As you said we don' t say that. Also prawns on the barbie ruins the taste.

These guys were/are huge in Australia, a young Jimmy Barnes actually replaced replaced Bon Scott in a band called Fratenity briefly when Bon joined AC/DC so yea you picked up on the pub rock connection for sure. Cold Chisel didn't work the States like AC/DC or later like INXS did to break internationally they broke up in 1983 & didn't reunite until the late 1990's. On pure talent they were probably better than those bands but you know music is subjective.

That's cold chisel for ya, they always played the 💩 out of everything and gave it their all. Few bands are better live than on record, but my favourite album is still their first. So many great songs on there, but I love one long day the best. Every time I see someone reacting to them, specially this version of wild thing, I think to myself, "Prepare to have your mind blown!"🤯 😂 Yes, I'm very patriotic about our Aussie bands, they have a flavour all of their own, I recommend listening to Chain with black and blue, rose tattoo with rock and roll outlaw and bad boy for love, Stevie Wright singing Evie (a 3 part rock song with a story line) and black eyed bruiser, then the 60's band he was in called the easy beats with Friday on my mind. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs with Mamma, or most people I know think that I'm crazy, or children of the sun. Billy started very young and ended up as a true blue Aussie legend, who dipped his toes into many different music genres and his last album was made in Tangere with a middle eastern flavour. Oh Fatima and since you've been gone are my personal favourites that you can try out, if you wanna explore more of course.

Before the 1980’s all our bands had to pass the pub test to get noticed. If you weren’t any good, you didn’t get a second invite. If bad, you could be booed and heckled off stage....... if really bad ( or someone’s girl friend liked you too much ), you could be bashed senseless in the car park. Even international acts had to pass the pub test, but in concert. The Beach Boys managed 2 or 3 concerts of their 1960’s tour before being booed , heckled and threatened all the way back to the airport ....... they couldn’t play or sing. lol Jimmy Barnes is Australia’s most popular singer ever, even though John Farnham is regarded as the best and by many as maybe the best ever world wide...... of course we don’t consider opera singers, do we. I mean..... they can’t rock or even swing. lol You nailed Jimmy’s voice.......he prefers to crunch granite in his throat, but uses a softer , sweater voice for slow ballads etc and can even go as high as many great female soul and blues singers when doing the back up singing. You would like Jimmy’s duet with Tina Turner, doing her big hit Simply The Best. I prefer his duet with John Farnham covering Sam n Dave’s When Something is Wrong With My Baby...... bluesy American soul done to perfection by 2 white Aussies both born in Britain. Also doing a live cover of his own song, Stone Cold , with legendary blues man Joe Bonamassa on guitar..... filmed in Joe’s own private recording studio with his “ house” band. lol

Jimmy Barnes will never be anyone’s backing singer 😏 He’s always been the lead singer who graciously steps aside occasionally to allow the lead guitarist Ian “Mossy” Moss who happens to have a great voice but a smoother voice than gravel rock voice of Jimmy who then takes the higher harmonies on those tracks. They are without a doubt unequivocally Australia’s greatest live rock band and adored by Australians which is why Jimmy wasn’t worried about getting out in the audience cos if anyone tried anything the whole auditorium would jump them. They played out gigs in late seventies before becoming so huge and revered that they had to take it to sellout concerts in massive crowd capacity venues and did 3 hour shows because they are so down to earth and such good blokes and wanted to give their fans a great night and they effing rock !!!! 😂
