The penetration was maybe the same on both, but the tanto left a much bigger hole for the same depth of penetration... so I think you actually proved it's a lot better in this case.

I don't own this particular model of knife, but I do own several with the 'secure-ex' sheaths. I have found that they do not dull the edges of my blades if I press the spine into the sheath as I insert or withdraw the knife.

I do the same with all of my sheaths. Leather will dull them pretty fast as well, unless you are a bit careful. I don't see it as an issue.

At night, I was approached quickly by two unidentified large animals while remote camping in the mountains. You can imagine my thoughts as these two sets of glowing eyes (headlight) bore down on me. I had a spear I carved from stick, spray and 7" bowie knife close by. I instinctively grabbed the spear to keep distance and never thought of the knife. As they ascended the dry creek bed 5 feet in front of me I noticed they were two lost hunting dogs. Knife is good but think about a spear also.

The clip point is better for flesh imo. However if one may also need to open food cans, pry etc then i would recommend the tanto b/c it thrusts well enough while also being really strong. Your absolutely correct on sheaths btw. Wooden scabbard is the way to go. I make custom compression fit wooden scabbards for mine so they dont rattle &/or fall out w/o a retention strap.

Mora's 12C27 takes micro rolls relatively easily during wood or hunting jobs in their 22 degree angle. I sharpen my Clipper by hand and make the bevel a little convex. So my Clipper's angle will be 25 degrees or so. I feel like 28 degrees of the Robust is too large for the light Mora knives. It reduces its handiness. Batoning knives should have both 4mm thick at least and 30 degrees unless it is a super steel in my opinion. Thanks.

The Tanto penetrated deeper and it had much more resistance because of the larger blade to begin with. imagine the wound left behind by both as well. The Tanto outperformed it.

I think, its ok for this particular model: 64 HRC, for 1055 - you can penetrate a tank with this knife, and nothing will happen. I bought that blade like a spare tanto exemplar in my collection. And its still very brave. After my problems with MTech 676, I really was more respectful to Cold Steel. GI is my best tanto, better than Recon T, MTech 676, Zero Tolerance and all the other models. I don't know, why do you so negative about this. This is a good friend in extremal situations. Thank you for your work!!!👍

Its blade length is 7.5 inches. We have 6.000 brown bears on this island. I have ever met a bear 3 times in a 100 yard range. All bear hunters carry a stabbing knife for the case. We have more than 5 bear attack accidents annually, and a couple of people are killed. It is proven that all the survivors carry a hatchet and smack the bear with it. I am assuming a very close fight where I cannot smack but only stab it. A single stab will make it away. I am real serious. Thanks.

30 degrees means 15 degrees per side. What I say in angle is just from my estimation based on the fact that factory V edges are 40 degrees, Mora Clipper andle is 22 degrees, and Mora Robust angle is 28 degrees. I am thinking 30 degrees is right for wood jobs including batoning. 25 degrees is right for game dressing. Thanks.

For a good penetration test, try using a stack of 20 or so pieces of cardboard... after a few stabbing tests, you can count precisely how many layers the knife penetrated. As always, great video.

If you have to have a knife only for bear defense rather than a firearm, consider one you can lash to a pole and use as a spear. A cord-wrapped handle would be superior because you could use the cord to lash it to the pole. Staying out of reach of the bear would be of highest importance. Also good for wolves. Thanks for the video, very informative as always. ~A bear hunter

The Secure-Ex sheath hasn’t changed much at all, it dulled my cold steel master hunter after drawing the knife out a few times. I ended up selling the relatively new knife partially because of the soft handle, aside from the sheath.

I'm glad you did this video, I have never understood "American tanto", Japanese tanto makes sense, American tanto was made by Cold Steel to look cool but I don't think it's better. It takes away smooth slicing from the blade in exchange for no penetration extra. It also makes the knife harder to sharpen and harder for multi-purpose uses. Bad design imo. BTW I would enjoy seeing a video in the future for beginners to convex a secondary edge knife or folding knife. It is very useful for me. Thanks

I'm assuming a bit longer blade than you do. 5 inch blade seems the best to kill a man in a single thrust, and 6 to 7 inch blade seems the best to give a bear a decent damage to make it away. Anyway nimbleness is the most important thing as you think. GI Tanto is light for the size and nimble enough in my opinion. Thanks.

I've heard the story of an olympic fencer trying to touch a bear with his rapier. He wasn't able to. Bears are incredibly fast and I doubt you'd stand a chance with any knife. I hope you'll never have to find out. The GI Tanto is a neet knife for the money, I use mine for box opening mostly. Totally agree on the sheath, just like the BK 14 sheath, it's a shame.

Hi Doc, what do you think of the Silky Nata as a small axe for bushcraft ?, as far as a G.I. Tanto for Bear Defence, I dunno Doc, I wouldn't attempt a Bear with a .45 a.c.p. let alone a knife, Doc, I think you need to lay down heh heh heh.
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 9 жыл бұрын
The Silky Nata is made for forestry people to cut branches off the trunk. They use it at a high position and its blade has a progressive angle to its handle. So it should not be very useful for batoning. For general chopping it doesn't matter though. Thanks.

Using a 4" blade against a bear would be like poking Mike Tyson with your baby finger. You're only going to make him mad. With a knife you will get one shot, if you're lucky. Best to make sure it is a deep penetrating thrust that is able to damage major organs. "Fighting a bear" is a misnomer. No man is capable of fighting a bear. You have a chance, with some luck, if you use a large knife. It has been done.

G BRONCO What hate? I don't hate the USA, it's the "modified tanto" that I find disgusting. It's a design that sacrifices the belly along with cutting power for no increase in performance. It's also called "American tanto" or "Murican" if you care about proper pronounciation. There's no "A" in "America", no "P" in "psychology" and no "W" in "sword". "America" is pronounced "Murica" and modified tantos suck, these are raw facts, nothing hateful about them.

"Tanto" style knives (which are nothing like a Japanese Tanto at all) have very strong tips given the wide angle though they don't have a monopoly on wide angle tips. They're especially good at slashing clothing when compared with pretty much any other type of knife (except maybe a karambit), though most tanto knives are pretty small and not meant for slashing so it's pretty futile. But that's pretty much their only advantage. They're mostly just a "tactical knife" gimick.

Not correct what you are saying! I also have the Secure-ex(r) sheath. It DOES not dull the edge at all. If you put the knife correct in the sheath, the edge will never touch the sheath inside! The sheath is a special design. If you are rubbing the knife in and out very fast in all directions like a complete idiot.... yeah, then you are fucking up the edge. So stay honest against Cold Steel and the people on this channel.

You seem to be a fine craftsman, but I CAN ASSURE YOU, you most likely will NOT get close enough to a Brown bear to stab it, our native hunters the American Indian people who used edged weapons only as a last response, if they were fighting from a attack where the bear is on top OF them, this is generally a suicide defense to take the bear to death with you because the bear will likely kill a man if he gets a hold on him! FOR fighting or protection or hunting Native American Indian people used Spears and Bow and arrows. BUT THAT'S a BEAUTIFUL, PRACTICAL, EFFECTIVE DESIGN. Very nice!
