Having fallen thru the ice as a boy skating on a local pond in january - i remember very well what that water feels like. Lilly, it hurt to watch you do that. I however did not have a fire at my disposal. I had to walk about 2 miles home with temps in the teens. Even after wringing out my pants and shirt and coat and so forth, everything froze almost solid on the way home. One of those things in life you never forget.

Standing on one freezing cold, bare foot, on un-level snow covered ground, while leaning forward with both arms outstretched with both hands rubbing and warming your other foot over a fire...... The dexterity and balance that took after being in ice cold water!... 9 out of 10 people couldn't do that. You more than passed the challenge Lilly; you 'Surpassed' it.😉

I believe you'd been better off getting out of your wet clothes before embarking on your fire building. Those few extra minutes in those wet clothes could have really caused your extremities....especially fingers and toes.....some harm. Once the wet clothes are off, doing some running in place, as fast as you can move your cold legs and, some jumping jacks would help get your core heat back up some, then build the fire. If there is snow on the ground, especially in measurable amounts, rubbing snow on your wet clothes helps get a lot of moisture out, just like what Polar Bears do, when they roll around in the snow after being in ice cold water. I know we think what harm can a couple of extra minutes in wet clothes do, when it's very cold but, those couple of extra minutes could even mean getting your fingertips and toes frostbit and, even if just a small amount is present, it's very painful! That's just my 2 p's worth lol. Thank you for putting yourself in harm's way, to teach us something very important.

Lily did the challenge in the sequence that the orders demanded. She also doubled the required cold water soak time on her own initiative. I do think I would have prepared a reflector for the fire and a way to dry the clothing ASAP. Cold immersion will cause loss of fine motor muscle control. I was impressed by Lily's being able to coordinate her spark-striking motions; that was good enough for me. She is promoting the show; not participating in it.

Did a double take when Lilly read the first mission 10 pushups; surprised it wasn't a hundred or something absurd. One of my school projects during high school was to interview someone who had served during Vietnam. I had interviewed a co-worker sense all three of my mothers brothers just don't like talking about their time serving in the military. One of the tests of endurance was completing 100 pushups on his first day at boot camp. The polar bear plunge and making a fire without surprise Lilly did very well.

Yes... and in a hypothermia condition, loss of focus is a natural "response", as blood flow tends to focus more toward the core, less blood flow to the brain, so consciously reminding yourself to remain focused is a very pertinent piece of advice.

not only that but cold can be a shock t othe system, your breathing comes more shallow and your body reacts in ways you might not be realizing or comfortable with. You might not know your your body reacts so you cannot prepare for it. Keep calm, and focus on what you need to do to survive.
@degen83

***** Right, and if you are really cold you will shake uncontrollably, which can make tasks like taking your clothes off or putting more clothes on or starting a fire very hard to do.
@jfbeam
@jfbeam 7 жыл бұрын
The best advice is to always carry a set of dry clothes -- "space bag", but don't bet on that saving your life as you could lose your bag in the river/lake -- which its' good to keep your firesteel in your pocket. (and, if you know you'll be around water, wear wool.) Her card explicitly had her set up a fire pit _before_ falling in a river. Her "falling in a river" was _PLANNED_; in a survival situation, your falling into a river won't be. Collecting the wood for a fire after being dunked is orders of magnitude harder.
@degen83
@degen83 7 жыл бұрын
jfbeam Right, and if you do get dunked in water your fire starting implements might be too wet to get a fire started. Just be aware of where you are hiking and plan accordingly.

Once I flipped a canoe in Northern Minnesota in October. The air temperature was above freezing but the water was very cold. It took some time to get the canoe to shore - I clung to it so as to not drown. I made a fire with my primitive fire kit (flint, steel, char cloth) and used dried ferns for most of the tinder. I then stripped naked, wrapped a blanket around myself & huddled by the fire. In about 30 seconds I went from near hypothermic to completely fine!

yeah, but what would the point be of doing that? it make great sense for taking a polar bear bath, but otherwise? As for river crossing by wading... well, I think most does not remove all clothes,. even if some may remove certain parts. And river crossing by wading a frozen water in the winter is to be avoided anyway IF possible.

She had this "mission card" from a tv show and followed it. Of course, it will be a lot harder if you have not that preparation step in the "mission". I think everyone understands that and that this was not intended for full realism (with full risks). As for training, I think it make perfect sense to go step by step and increase realism in a controlled way. It would not make sense to start training with full realism and unnecessarily risks. Add one evolution at a time, increase realism step by step, and you mitigate risks. To me, going maximum realism in the first training evolution is unacceptable and will probably not work well as training, the goal of course being to deal with real life situations.

Born and Raised On North Vancouver Island, and let me tell you, in the wrong time of year, ALL the wood can be wet haha. You have to find the real dry stuff under the big trees, by the base of the tree. You want Ceder to start the fire, and Fur to burn (here anyways). I was not judging her performance here, I just don't understand why they would make it a half challenge haha. You can collect that wood, even when soaked, it does not take long. I bet it is easier to do this, than process bigger stuff. I don't think there would be that much more "risk" involved, in a controlled environment/situation, like she is in. She is a woman I know would survive if she was lost, and you don't see that very often anymore. Finally a woman that is not in "Selfie" mode. She did good though....I liked the vid she did where she got dropped off in the bush for a couple of days. Does anyone know if that spot was near Nanaimo/Victoria?

Cool video :) BUT most people wont have a premade fire to light up when falling into cold water. Do it the other way around and ill be impressed, Cheers from Scandinavia, awsome to see Austrians on the tube.

" I think anyone can do this challenge ". I am pretty sure most would chicken out regardless. Don't forget that the video clearly shows she got a "mission card" from a tv show (game show whatever) and followed the instruction on that card. Not much else is claimed here. As for training goes, it makes great sense to start simple in a controlled environment and then increase realism step by step, the end coal being a high degree of realism. It would be poor, unprofessional, training if one started out with maximum realism in the first evolution.

Eh...just have some spare clothes and a blanket in backhand if you cant get the fire going, pointless having a premade fire done. And regarding jumping out in cold water, why do you think most ppl would have chicken out? Fairly common to do so, atleast here in Scandi. But I get your point about the wildcard, she only did what the card told her too, but then again...its a pointless quest in my opinnion.

Eh... Hej, I live in Sweden and yeah I think many people can deal with colder conditions or think they can, but are the Swedish beaches full of people bathing when the sea water is regarded as not warm and pleasant enough? No, we are very few there by then (granted that the lower level accepted by many is way lower in some other parts of the world). Even if there are still a lot of people on the beach itself, you are likely to see a handful of old timers in the water and a few very young kids playing at the shallow end. Humans are convenient by nature. If it feels too inconvenient, most would not go in, even if they could do so perfectly safe (safe=like not having a heart condition). I think some would even hesitate to jump into really cold water or from a second floor building if their lives depended on it. I guess that is instincts not countered by training. Could also be fear blocking motivation and/or rational thinking. In most cases I would say it is a matter of simple being too inconvenient. It is just easier to not do it when you have a choice.

Outdoors Eh. Very sorry to hear that. Generally speaking, I feel that titles or parts may sometimes be miss leading and one has to make a judgement call out of the context and/or full picture. Hope you reconsider. Anyways, I think a very large majority sees this for what it is. She doesn't claim this to be a full instruction as you seems to imply.

I was looking for this comment!! If you were thrown into this situation you would be lucky to even have dry wood around to gather let alone a ferrocerium rod or tinder to start the fire with. The big question is could you do all this and dry your clothes off too? Lot's of if's!! However props to you for doing this, I would have a hard time getting in the water to begin with. ;)

I too was looking for this topic to be broached. It's one thing to jump into 35 degree water for 20 seconds when you've already got your fire all ready to go 10 feet away. I guess in an ideal situation that's how it would happen. Quite another thing to jump into the same water with absolutely no preparations for a fire done prior to the immersion. I'm thinking exponentially more challenging.

Damn... at 7:12 you really have some strong triceps and trapezius muscles. Respect. Do you go to the gym or is that just from living an active lifestyle?
@Clark1050
@Clark1050 6 жыл бұрын
Im not saying that she's obese in any way. And just because a person got defined muscles to a certain degree doesn't automatically mean that you're strong af. The muscles themselves are not superdefined, but you can clearly see the entire muscle, but nothing more than that. You can't see the long, lateral or the medial head of the tricep very good (e.g). Go stand in the mirror, push your entire arm into your body and look. You will get the same result as her at 7:12. Different size though.

@hzh hzh actually thats where you are wrong bodybuilders are only building show muscles as they are called in the medical field its the working muscles underneath that are the true strength. bigger doesnt mean shit. I guarantee a blue collar worker aka construction worker, laborer, etc etc will be far stronger then a gum rat

When I watch you cut wood out in the forest it made me feel sad because I miss my youth. I'm still "youthful" so I continue to do what I can to enjoy the outdoors!
