Sable, that "red wood" is cedar. It's a cedar chest. Companies like Lane used to make them and possibly still do. Girls used to get them as "hope chests" to put in items they would need when they got married, like quilts. They were really popular in the 50's and earlier. And, as others have said, cedar keeps moths away.

Hey Cole we had some 18 row folding corn heads and we got rid of them because of these reasons. The first thing that goes out and is a big problem is the hinges that fold the headers down and if they break then your stuck not picking corn till it’s fixed. Also when your on the road your road speed is slower because of all the weight on the front. I would say try and find just a standard head and not a folding.

Sable, the reason why chests, closets, and so on, were made out of cedar, is because the woody smell would keep mothes out without having to "stink up" stored bedding and clothes with mothballs. Leave the "red wood" untreated. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FIND!!!

Don't paint or coat the inside. The cedar wood has a nice smell to it if left alone. Also, don't let the sun shine into the box interior or the cedar will slowly shift over to more of a brown. And be careful sanding the outside of the box if that happens to be cedar too. Cedar is very soft and light weight and will sand away to nothing pretty quick.
@nurseratchet26343 жыл бұрын
Love the cedar chest. Just be aware the older ones can be dangerous. Young kids like to play in them, and they become trapped, and suffocate.
