My puppy is arriving in 2 days! I am sticking with a collar initially because he is tiny and I don't want to invest in a harness until I've had some time to see his habits. I found a super light lease by Coastal at my local pet shop. THANKS so much for mentioning the the dangling pet tag issues - I hadn't thought of that - I will definitely purchase a silent one.

I prefer the harness. Did not think/know about the tags being so close to the ears. But what to do about a rabies tag? A girlfriend said you only need to get a certificate that you don't have to have the tag. So that might resolve that issue.
@HowToTrainADreamDog11 ай бұрын
Yes, just in case you need to show it, you can have the certificate. There are also products call tag silencers that keep the tags from jingling.

Great video, some things I hadn't thought of. I don't like using a crate in the car as it's huge and awkward so I prefer to buckle my dog in in which case he'll be wearing a harness as I don't want the seat belt attached to his neck only. I also prefer a harness for long line work in the event the line hits a snag while he's running, I wouldn't want the line attached to his neck. In hot weather for swimming and walking I prefer to just have a collar on him.

We just got a cane corso 8 week puppy is it ok to use harness? We must change to a collar after?
@lyndagabriel65392 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, I love your videos and will definitely do your course when my puppy is more than a glimmer in the parents' eyes... One thing I can't find anywhere: it will be a yorkie, so tiny/delicate and I'll use an appropriate harness. But logistically... I'm in a condo, will be taking the elevator down countless times a day... during the day, is it safe to keep it on when I'm around and when she's having her quiet crate time? Or should I figure out how to scoop her up, get her to the elevator, harness her in the elevator, for all those trips outside? I would really appreciate your input.
@HowToTrainADreamDog2 жыл бұрын
Hey Lynda, great question. We advise against leaving the harness on while your puppy is going about her day, as it can get caught on things and be dangerous. You can work through some cooperative care with her to make putting her harness on an easy task. You can join our online course for additional guidance from our trainers on how to teach this to your pup! 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/

Im thinking of switching to a harness mostly for all the extra options, fashion and the stance that its not nessesarily the tool but the training behind it. so if I can train my dog similarly to using a collar, I think harnesses look cooler so I will give it a try and see if its a good fit.

Hi. Good video. However I have a question: I don´t have a puppy. I have an adult dog, doberman and he is so sweet and hardly ever pull. And I do love the retractable leash. Which collar should I use for a retractable leash? Thanks so much
@HowToTrainADreamDog3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricardo! We do not recommend retractable leashes, even if you don't have a puller on your hands. Check out this blog for more info on why these are not safe for you or your dog: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/no-pulling-puppy-tools-to-walk-with-ease/ Click the collar link for our favorite collar!
@ricardourroz93223 жыл бұрын
@@HowToTrainADreamDog I am so sorry but I 100% disagree. As anything the problem is not the tool is how you use the tool and if the person handling it has common sense. If there is traffic (people or dogs) and you let a long leash, well... come on. Common sense. A car is a great tool or a super dangerous one, depends who´s driving it. Accident happens because people are chatting or checking their cell phones and not paying attention. Not because of the retractable leash 🤦🏼♂️ Tanks anyways.

There have been several coyote incidents in my area, so I'm going with a harness. Do you think the coyote vests are actually effective or just gimmicky?
@HowToTrainADreamDog3 жыл бұрын
Prevention is a better strategy rather than getting all the way to the point of a coyote attacking and then moving away. The spines on the harness will likely bother the pup and increase the heat. So I'd go to other areas where coyotes are not present and of course never let the dog out alone.
@lyndagabriel65392 жыл бұрын
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Unfortunately, coyotes are now urban animals and everywhere... at least in the capital city in Ottawa... they are just geniuses at being invisible. I'm also worried and I will be very vigilante with my new puppy, but I appreciate the cons for the specific harness and will not choose it.

my puppy is not a puller,she's lazy as hell! Sometimes when I'm potty training her she would just lay and I have to carry her
@HowToTrainADreamDog3 жыл бұрын
Actually this isn't lazy ... It sounds like your pup is not quite ready for all the “scary things” of the outside world. This is common for this age of a puppy and the limited amount of time he has spent working on leash skills and being outside. The behavior you are seeing (laying down, refusing to move) is called pancaking and is a common sign of a puppy being overwhelmed and scared. It’s important to listen to a dog’s body language - that’s how they are communicating to us. If we push our pups past their comfort zone, we could create some lifelong challenges with new things and new environments. When we see this behavior it means it’s time to work on leash skills at home, then slowly increase the levels of distractions. You can then change environments to places that are outside but still very calm, like your backyard or the garage and eventually working in your driveway. This could take weeks or months and should only progress as your pup is 100% comfortable. Knowledge of canine body language will be important so you know when it’s time to increase the distractions. During this time, decompression walks might be the best way to get your pup some exercise. Take a look at this recent blog for all the great info on leash skills. The actual training games, as well as lessons on canine communication, are covered in the online course. www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/leash-training-a-puppy-to-walk-without-pulling/ 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/

Harnesses do not prevent pulling. Harnesses are designed to encourage pulling. If you want to prevent pulling use a head harness, which is also safe to use with puppies.
@HowToTrainADreamDog4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for commenting. With proper training any dog can wear a harness and not pull. All 3 of my dogs can wear a harness, collar or head halter and they have been trained not to pull no matter what tool is on them. Teaching your dog where you want them to be and reinforce them for being in the right position at your side can help!

I use a harness for my baby chihuahua. He doesn’t pull at all. He walks perfectly and it’s only been a week since I got him. Just walks next to me or behind, sometimes wanders off but if I call his name he follows me. It’s all about respecting the dog I think. He knows I’m his leader, I feed and protect so he naturally follows 🤷🏼♀️
