In this KZbin video, I discuss a book called "Drug Use for Grown Ups" written by Dr. Carl Hart, a psychology professor at Columbia University who is a drug user. The book argues that drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin, and psychedelics can enhance people's lives and are not as detrimental as commonly believed. Throughout the video, I summarize some of the points made in the book, including Dr. Hart's own experiences with drugs and research that supports his views.I also address the societal and cultural beliefs surrounding drug use, including the historical and current racial disparities in drug policies and enforcement. I share my own thoughts and opinions on the subject, as well as some personal experiences with marijuana use.The video concludes by questioning how people can reconcile their personal beliefs and experiences with the evidence presented in the book. I invite viewers to share their own perspectives and engage in a discussion about this controversial topic.

I've been diagnosed with cyclothymia, and have found that heroin has helped me during periods of agitated depression. I've never really found it to be that addictive, either. After all, heroin is really just a pro-drug for morphine. Hart's friend is absolutely correct: opioids are some of the safest drugs on the planet, as long as you're careful with dosing. They're basically non-toxic as well, with no noticeable comedown or hangover. I've used the drugs covered here (heorin and meth), as well as plenty of others - and can confidently say the drug itself is rarely the culprit in addiction/destructive use - the drug use is often self-medication for some other psychological problem. In my case, I have used several such substances for different purposes, heroin for the reason stated above - as well as methamphetamine to treat my ADHD. I can't stand doctors for the most part, and prefer not to have to beg for prescriptions - I've found that if you have knowledge on a topic at all, you probably know more than your doctor (and your doctor will very openly resent you for it).

Do you take any supplements? Some who have taken heroin says phenibut and kratom, can be comparable to it. They’re relaxing. Can’t speak to how it compares as I’ve never tried heroin. I’ve had drinks with L theanine. Helps with anxiety. Tried kanna and euphoric AF, but very altered thinking. L tyrosine is also meant to help with focus and stress. There’s more I’ve taken mixed with others in relaxation drink or supplements that helped. Just throwing it out there. Don’t know when you took these, or about where young got them. I’m sure you know there’s fentanyl in all the street drugs now. Not sure if anything like that would be of any benefit to you. I know dealing with doctors can be difficult. Also good point about the heroin being so close to morphine. If heroin doesn’t have any use than neither should morphine. It’s also been suggested opioids be used for depression, but it’s very controversial, as you can imagine.

@@stupidveganworld I have a good source for heroin - not worried about fentanyl. I've used kratom, and find it fairly comparable to heroin - I call it heroin 0.5 lol. Most people find it less addictive, and it's certainly less dangerous. Yes, I've actually found very low dose heroin to be good for depression as well. It is, however, very difficult to find the perfect dosage for this, as the dose seems to be only slightly above the threshold dosage (and no higher). A very low dose of opiates are fantastic for making everything just seem a little brighter, which really is the perfect cure for depression haha... I haven't used phenibut, so can't comment on that. L Theanine seems to reduce the jitters from higher doses of caffeine if I remember correctly, but that's all I know really.

@@tabor503im not trying to be on that attack here, I'm certainly open to this type of drug use, but dr. Harts assertion seems to be that self medicating for mental illnesses is the true cause of addiction as opposed to the molecule itself, and isn't that what you're saying you do? Also, I think theres a lot of value to what hart and morris have to say, but its risky to only listen to the experts who you want to believe. I agree we need to reform the public perception of drugs and Ive got friends that do the "hard" ones, but at the same time, we shouldn't overcorrect; addiction is real and devastating, and its good to be vigilant about it whether the addiction is to something legal or not.

Dr Gabor Mate, a palliative care and family Dr, who is now a trauma and addiction specialist days that it's mot the drug, but the underlying trauma and emotions that the person who becomes addicted is trying to hide. Many eat without having eating disorders, many work, without becoming a workaholic (me), many drink wine at dinner, or parties but don't become alcoholics. He looks at their ACE scores, or later stressor in life. Poverty, a sudden extreme chronic illness, etc. A quote he says, "let's not ask why the addiction, let's ask, why the pain" I love dr Gabor Mate and Dr Hart for their knowledge and open mindedness to look deeper

This is an old video so I hope you realized by now that when you question the safety of street drugs, that is solved by regulating street drugs. By having your methamphetamine regulated and quality controlled. By having your heroin quality controlled and regulated. Having these street drugs properly labeled by dosage with warning labels etc. Just like the marijuana now that is legalized. And just like alcohol always has been.

Drugs, as we all know, are very queer things: some parts are presented with appalling vividness, with details worked up with the elaborate finish of jewellery, while others one gallops through, as it were, without noticing them at all, as, for instance, through space and time. Drugs seem to be spurred on not by reason but by desire, not by the head but by the heart, and yet what complicated tricks my reason has played sometimes in drugs, what utterly incomprehensible things happen to it!

Carl heart is merely saying his job in research is to keep people alive and telling people that they shouldn’t do something is outright against what in Air Force airmen went and joined the United States military to do which is defend the constitution and the rights to liberty in the pursuit of happiness even if that does an adult utilizing mind altering substance

Reality will always give you drugs or something better with a delay. The only thing that seperates real life from a dream is that in a dream when you go lucid and you intend to experience something, it just appears immediately. In Finding Nemo, Marlin loses his son. He is caught by a fisherman uh or a scientist and he's like taken away on a boat and the point of the movie is that we're trying to find Nemo. That's what Marlin wants to find. His son. Now the problem here is that Marlin doesn't know how to find his son but he just knows Beyond The Shred of a doubt that he's going to find his son because he's a dad and he lost his only son. So his whole life he knows for a fact, his heart and his mind have come into Union, they've both agreed that 100% we're going to find our son but I don't know how. So this is the same for you with your goal. You want something 100% for sure without a doubt but I don't know how I'm going to get it. That's okay normally you don't have to know how to get something. All you need to know is the first step. This is exactly how reality creation works. You hold your goal (P Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sydney) in your mind and then you trust that the universe is going to take you there in its own mysterious way. Trust the universe that it's going to bring you to your goal but you won't know how. On the surface it's going to seem like everything is falling apart but once you look back you're going to say oh I actually needed to go through that failure because now I'm successful but I couldn't have been successful without that failure. You say oh this is going to bring me to my goal and you just kind of affirm to yourself that the Universe looks out for me and that the universe is on my team and is helping me manifest what I want. You want to be like Dory. You want to have radical trust in the universe and you want to hold in your mind your vision. That's why she keeps repeating P Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sydney over and over again. Hold your vision in mind and trust that whatever happens you're gonna be brought there. That's how you create your reality using your imagination. Go after your goal in the same way that you go to get the post from the letterbox. Stop imagining the post to be a problem and simply put one foot in front of the other in the direction of the letterbox. Any goal you have if you can think and feel about it the same way as you do when you go to get your post from the mailbox then it's a done deal. (P Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sydney) 📬📮

As a 62 year old woman who is now prescribed mixed amphetamine tablets for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and, who has taken street methamphetamine here and there through my life (not regularly) for partying, and at one point every day in my early 20's, I will tell you street methamphetamine is completely different than my prescription of mixed amphetamine salt tablets. This us why some with ADD respond better to Ritalin (timed release meth basically) than to adderall (amphetamine salts.) As a nutritionist, and personal experience, I understand the meth molecule crosses the blood/ brain barrier different. My NAET practitioner and my chiropractor muscle tested me, and both showed Ritalin would be better for my than adderall. 😊

thanks for sharing Tammy. Ya it's curious b/c in his book Dr. Hart mentions people can't tell the difference, and I suspect that might be if the drugs are taken the same route? I'm guessing in your youth you were smoking meth vs now you're taking it orally. Do you think the different routes of administration account for the differences in experiences or something else?

@A_Psych_Nurse no, I've never smoked it. From a biochemical standpoint, look at the structure of methamphetamine vs amphetamine salts. The meth crosses the blood brain barrier. Methylation has to do with lipids. Lipids being fat. I really like Dr Hart, and have listened to and read a lot of his stuff, but this is one thing I completely disagree with him on. I've known a couple of people addicted to methamphetamine who say amphetamine salts do nothing for them.

i wish i had the organic chem background to have an opinion on this lol :(. Both of them must cross the BBB to some degree though if they are having psychotropic effects, i'd think (unless they were somehow having an indirect effect but I'm sure this isn't the case--e.g., some meds might effect your electrolytes which then has an effect on the brain, but I'd wager both meth and amphetamine definitely are crossing the BBB)@@tammyrobinson1613

I’ve done Meth a bunch of times, in my opinion its not bad but it is dangerous. It is very potent and ment to be taken very carefully, I believe it’s more dangerous when smoked and especially injected cause it’s harder to control and monitor your dose that way. Which I believe is many peoples mistake. It’s also not a good idea to take it very often, two days a week is way too much…this because the down side of meth is not so much from the drug itself but the extreme lack of sleep and appetite that come with it. Sleep and nutrition is extremely important for one’s well being. it would be very bad thing to be addicted to meth,it can for sure fuck your life up if not taken responsibly. And you need to be able to handle the feelings of uncomfortableness the day or two after it wears off. Which If your careful with your dose and don’t over do it really isn’t that bad.. hangovers or worse. For me I never got addicted to meth, it’s a great time but by the time the ride is almost over usually the next night, you feel pretty exhausted. I prefer taking long breaks from it. I don’t see how people stay up for days or even do it twice week. To me that’s crazy
