Yet Nebraska STILL came to town and jammed it down your throat. 6 games were played without an easy Heisman winner at tailback (Lawrence Phillips) had he not been a thug. His replacement was a true freshman. Those scores would have been even more lopsided had Phillips played (see Florida game). Nebraska had 0 (ZERO) sacks allowed FOR THE SEASON. All time best!

I have watched it again on KZbin but nothing beats the eye test. I honestly thought Florida was going to win that game going into it but what I saw on the field was insane. It was like Nebraska was a college team and Florida was a high school team. The pure physical nature and size at that time of that 95 team Nebraska team on offense and defense was clearly a factor. That Nebraska team had 18 different ball carriers that year and 9 dudes with at least 185 yards rushing. To put things into perspective, Ahman Green ran for 1086 yards that year in just 12 games and only had 22.4% of the teams carries! 627 total rushes for 4,398 yards equaled a whopping 399.8 yards rushing per game. 51 total rushing TD's combined by 10 different revolving-door RB's. Nebraska's run defense was astounding also (341 attempts for 862 yards allowed, just 2.5 yds/rush) during the 95' season. For a team that made other teams throw the ball early and often, they still only allowed just under 50% completion-% and an allowed 103.00 QB rating (college rating). Ridiculous numbers won't happen again, even in college football. To top that all off, Nebraska special teams kickoff team allowed just 16.1 yds/ret. (65 returns for 1,059 yds.)

And how many fumbles did Nebraska lose in total? Nine. Nine whole turnovers from the ground. And to think Nebraska had the best offensive line is an understatement. FOUR of their starters were new. Fullbacks. Nebraska utilized them so well in their offense, and nowadays you hardly ever see them. Had Phillip's not get suspended for the majority of the season Nebraska's rushing totals would be a lot higher, and a better chance for a Heisman win for the Cornhuskers. And Neb's NCs in the 90s came against their 1st, 2nd and 4th weakest schedules. in 25 yrs of bowls, Osborne only beat 2 coaches that had a winning bowl record when he played them. 95 WAS NOT one of them. LSU passed for a lot more yards (402 per game vs 142), but the Huskers didn't have to pass, they just marched down the field with 7 yards per rush. The Huskers didn't allow a single QB sack the entire season LSU... sacked 35 times for 221 yards. ( or was that their opponents? It's worse if I grabbed the wrong LSU stat) The Blackshirts had 20 interceptions, or 1.7 per game. LSU had 17 or 1.13 per game. The Blackshirts allowed five punt returns for 12 yards over the entire season, or about 1 yard per game. LSU allowed 9 returns for 117 yards, or about 7.8 yards per game. The Huskers averaged about 2.3 punts per game. LSU... 3.4 punts per game. The Huskers never had a procedure penalty the entire season. LSU had 24 total penalties. In the championship game, Nebraska held Florida to -28 rushing yards, 7 sacks, a safety, 3 INTs including a pick 6, set the championship game record for 524 rushing yards, set the Fiesta Bowl record for points in a quarter (29), and held Florida to less than half their season average of yards (only 269). 95 Nebraska was beyond unreasonably dominant. There really isn't any comparison.

@javierhernandez64 honestly I know NB was real good. It caught my attention as a young knew comer to college football. But no disrespect to those older teams but these younger more athletic kids are faster and more physical at almost every position on the field. The game has changed also. The type of rough house tactics that we loved in the old days have been eliminated from football today. Even though the football players are still physical they are smarter because they have to know when to be. LSU's 2019 Championship team was wayyyy before its time and it could've played vs USC's 2004 team, Miami's 2001 team, and yes NB 1995 team. First off, Pete Caroll and USC didn't even wanna play satan, I mean saban's 2003 LSU Championship team. We were ready for USC then, they didn't want it. But the 2019 team would beat those other good college squads. I'm not gonna disrespect them by saying they get blown out but they would lose nonetheless.

You are absolutely spot on in this evaluation. The 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers are the greatest team since Rutgers and Princeton first played this game in 1869!! When evaluating a great team, you must evaluate all the criteria. Offense, defense, starting talent, and depth. It is that last component that separated the Cornhuskers from all their rivals. NO TEAM COULD GO AS DEEP INTO THEIR LIMITLESS BENCH AS NEBRASKA. In the Fiesta Bowl, announcer Jim Nantz mentioned that during one series, Nebraska had plays made by players normally on the third team depth chart!! More good players, especially in the trenches, than any other team. In this game, Nebraska also had entire units of backup offensive linemen playing as well. Nobody could tell the difference!! Not one or two spots. The entire line!! Power, speed, and most of all, unlimited depth. They are the greatest college team ever assembled. In the most important category of all. Quality in numbers.

Let’s also consider that LSU is playing in the toughest division in the toughest conference in recent years. Also consider that Joe Burrow sat out almost every 4th quarter and in several games we didn’t see him after halftime. LSU could have put up a TON more points than they did and you already admitted that they gave up a lot of those points in garbage time. Obviously I’m an LSU fan but I just don’t think you can put either 95’ Nebraska or 01 Miami against the schedule LSU played this year and come up with a more impressive result than LSU put out. Computers are good but they can’t judge the way people can. Sure, numbers don’t lie but in this case, they may be confused 🤷🏼♂️

I agree... A lot of things LSU went through are overlooked... to match the difficulty of their schedule you’d have to add 3 Top 5 teams onto Miami and Nebraska’s schedule... There’s a huge difference in caliber between the. schedules... The deltas also show how much better LSU’s competition really was.... People also question LSU’s Defense not realizing the injuries they had to go through throughout the season and also having backups in in most 4th quarters... If you want a good measure of LSU’s Defense at full health compare the numbers in their last 4 games (Texas A&M through Clemson)...

Great breakdown. I would like to add that some of the close games with LSU weren’t necessarily as close as they appear. For the auburn, Bama, and Texas games, those teams were all down two scores at the end of the games and scored to bring it to within one score. While they were still somewhat close, they were all games the LSU was mostly in control of. LSU defense though wasn’t as great as it should’ve been.

Another case for 1995 Nebraska. Defensively, how do you account for them playing walk-ons and fans on defense in the 2nd half? They were up 42-6 on top 10 KSU going into the 4th and the 1928 Bugeaters were subbed in to play defense in the 4th quarter. 49-25 final. 63-21 at half against ASU. They literally only played 45 minute games until the grandparents came in to play in blowout time. One last thought. One thing that din't get mentioned in that in the national championship, 95 Nebraska DOMINATED a DOMINANT Gators team by 38 points. Prior to the national championship the 95 Gators closest margin of victory was by 11 points in two games, both times they took leads of 21 (against a Florida State team that finished top 5) and 23 against an Auburn team that finished ranked before taking their foot off the gas. 95 Nebraska was a machine, best team ever in my opinion. some of the games that year really could have been more lopsided and in the national championship game against Florida, they really could have put up 80 and they likely could have broken 80+ a few times that season, Osborne took starters out and limited the offense in the 2nd half of a few games to keep the scores as low as they were. I wish the current Nebraska teams were 1/4th of what that team was

I am a husker fan, and after this season I told everyone that LSU has the closest argument to greatest team ever with the 95 Huskers. The level of domination by both teams are on par with each other. People also forget that Nebraska did what they did with their 2nd string QB playing a significant role. I think if Burrows is not in those games LSU wins but not as convincingly. It is very difficult to compare still because this is the playoff era, and I do think the 2 should be separated. The pre-playoff era its Nebraska by far; post playoff era LSU by far. Nebraska if the playoff were in force would have also played the top competition for the title including I believe the undefeated PSU team which I do believe would have been the best match up for the Husker team. Both teams were smash football teams and played downhill. I really wish we would have seen that game! Stupid bowl game politics impeding what would have been great games back then. All I can say is for all the hype that surrounded Florida that year with their 5 wide WAC attack. Even Spurrier should know better than to go no backfield from the 1. So much for the supposed "offensive genius". He was put in his place that day by a far more experienced coaching staff.

I do not agree with your argument that LSU 2019 had a better offense, however. Nebraska put up 63 in one half against Arizona St. And look at what the Husker offense did to Florida in the championship game. It's hard for teams to prepare for the option, when they are not seeing it during the course of the season. That is why teams like Oklahoma and Michigan struggle with Army. Also, Nebraska's power attack was just way too much for opposing defenses. But, all in all, great work in making your points. Can you tell I'm a Nebraska fan--ha, ha?

@@CollegeFootballNerds I see. LSU had half of their ranked opponents come in the postseason (which makes sense). It would seem then that Nebraska and Miami had at least a fourth of their regular season schedule as ranked opponents assuming that the 12th game was also a ranked opponent). LSU with a 15 game schedule also had about 40% of the schedule was ranked opponents but only 3 of those games were in the regular season (1/4). I don't know where I was going with this 😂 but it is interesting to see that even adjusting for LSU's extra ranked games in the postseason, they played about the same percentage of ranked teams in their schedule.

Definitely got this one right. 1995 Nebraska is still the *only* team in college football history to win every single game by double digits even against elite competition all capped off with the largest national championship blowout in CFB history over a Florida team who also won every single game by double digits. It's rare enough that one team gets to the national championships winning every game by double digits but for Nebraska to then blow a Florida team away by that kind of margin over the only other team ever to win every game by double digits is just unbelievable of a feet. There hasn't been a team since then that's even got to a natty winning every single game by double digit blowouts.

I'll say this having no dog in the fight, I'm old enough where I watched all 3 teams. I agree that 1995 Nebraska was by far the best team I've ever seen. A few more things he didn't touch on, KZbin or do research on the 1995 Florida Gators team, the sent a lot of that team to the NFL, and the 1996 Gators won the national championship. But they were picked to beat Nebraska by many experts, even though Nebraska was a 3 point favorite. Any football player will tell you the worst way to lose a football game is when a team lines it up and physically dominates you. Nebraska average around 400 yards rushing a game, that's just dumb. They we're so physical that if they didn't rank either team when Nebraska played Florida#2, Colorado #3, Kansas State# 8 and I believe Nick Sabans Michigan State team was #10, but you would have thought all of those were non top 25 teams playing Nebraska. Ed Reed or Sean Taylor took a pick 6 back against a terrible Boston college and barely won like 18-7 and Miami came a drop 2 point conversion from at least going to ot at Virginia tech a team they should have beaten by 20. The Alabama LSU game was good, not sure LSU wins vs a healthy Tua. And Clemson looked like they could win until late 3rd quarter. The last thing I'll say is, when teams knew Nebraska was gonna run, they still ran, and ran for chunks. I've heard people say the right defense can stop an option attack, that was no ordinary option attack. That was an option attack with a top 10 defense backing them up, a top 3 all-time coach, and a bunch of athletes that ran 4.3's in the 40. They were so scary that Nick Saban himself considered retiring until Tom Osborne told him "you're a great coach and you're gonna win championships, we just have a lot of really good players this year. They were scary good, go ask SEC #2 ranked, undefeated Florida..... Nebraska beat them 62-24 in the National championship game, and ran for like 550 something yards, really? Again that's so good it's dumb.

This isn’t even close !!! Nebraska had a grand total of 1,200 passing yards for the entire season. They also only played against the 29th ranked strength of schedule. Tell me 1 offense that Nebraska team played against that was even remotely close to that LSU offense ?? Don’t say Florida, because they weren’t even in the same league as that LSU offense !!! Now for the reason why that Nebraska team wouldn’t beat that 2019 LSU team !! The 1995 Nebraska defense was built to play in the middle of the field between the hashmarks. They were also use to only having to cover 3 receiver sets at most during most games. That also meant that they could play with at least one high safety on the field at all times. That’s a big deal, why ?? Well that allows for you to literally have a center fielder in a sense by having that single high safety on every play, his only job is to be deeper than what the deepest is on the play. The 2019 LSU team doesn’t allow for you to be able to play defense like that. The 2019 LSU team forces your defense to spread out and defend the entire field. The leads to you having to cover all of those super talented LSU skill position players out in space in a lot of 1 on 1 situations !! Tell me who did Nebraska have that could cover all of those LSU WR’s in 1 on 1 situations all game long ?? Exactly, they didn’t have a secondary that could !! That Nebraska defense would have their tongues hanging out by the 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter because of having to chase all of those LSU skill position players around all over the field all game by that point. They would be totally gassed by then, which in turn would lead to that LSU team being able to name their points total for the game !! The Nebraska offense, especially because of not being able to throw the ball could certainly be handled by that LSU defense. LSU could walk players down and stack the box against Nebraska’s option offense without having any fear of Nebraska being able to beat them with the passing game. Remember, the LSU DB’s would be more than capable of being able to play against Nebraska’s passing game in a zero coverage scheme all game, man coverage in other words. Which means what ?? Exactly, LSU could keep the box loaded at all times against Nebraska’s offense. The LSU defense was more than capable enough to be able to slow the Nebraska offense down !!!!! Yet the question is, was the Nebraska defense capable enough to slow the LSU offense down ??? The answer is not just no, but hell no !!! The game has changed since 1995 in a big way. That Nebraska team never seen anything close to that LSU offense. There’s a real reason for that LSU offense setting the records that they did even while playing against the single hardest strength of schedule that a national championship awarded team has ever played against in the 151 year history of the sport. That reason is because that LSU offense was honestly just that damn good !!’ The 2019 LSU team basically played against a top 10 ranked team every other game for the entire 2019 season, nobody has ever done that before. Remember, 7 games played against a top 10 ranked team at the time of the game, while playing 15 total games in the 2019 season. That’s comes out to what ??? Yep, basically playing against a top10 ranked team every other game for the entire season like I said !! The game has changed since 1995 to much for that Nebraska team to be able to keep up with that LSU offense. Once Nebraska got down in the game, they never would be able to catch back up because of how efficient that LSU offense was in being able to score. Remember something here now, what kind of offensive system was both LSU & Alabama using up until 2016 or so for Alabama and up until 2019 for LSU ?? That’s right, a traditional 2 RB & 2WR set power run concept pro-style offensive system. Now tell me why did both teams quit using that style of offensive system ?? Yep, because it’s outdated and to easy to stop in todays game, that’s why they changed. Now tell me who was stopping those 2 ground & pound offense’s up until 2014 or so ??? Nobody was, but from that point forward teams did start stopping them. That’s why both LSU & Alabama changed from using them anymore. The simple fact was those offenses could keep up anymore. It would be no different for Nebraska’s option offense against that LSU team. That LSU was fast from sideline to sideline, they would’ve by far been the biggest, fastest & strongest defense that Nebraska team played against !! Nebraska played against the 29th ranked strength of schedule for the 1995 season, LSU played against the #1 ranked strength of schedule for the 2019 season. Nebraska played against 0 top 15 ranked defenses in the 1995 season, LSU played against 5 top 15 ranked defenses in the 2019 season. The number of ranked teams & number of top 10 ranked teams is big in LSU’s favor as well. That 2019 LSU team literally could’ve dropped 100 points on Oklahoma & 70 plus on Clemson had they wanted too, were that good. Everybody was gonna beat or slow down the LSU offense going into every game in the 2019 season they claimed. Yet at the end of the game it was another 40 plus points scored & 500 plus yards of offense gained by the LSU offense !!! I’m 50 years old and have been a huge college football fan for as long as I can remember. I’m telling you, that 2019 LSU team is the single best college football team that I’ve ever seen step on a college football field, bar none !!! If you said that you didn’t think that LSU team was gonna score every time they snapped the ball, well than you’re lying to yourself, simply because you know damn well that’s what you thought !! Nebraska lost 6 players in the 1996 NFL draft cycle that were either drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent with an NFL team. By contrast, the 2019 LSU team lost 20 players to the NFL in the 2020 NFL draft cycle !! This isn’t even remotely close, it’s 2019 LSU. That would be a game that the 1995 Nebraska team could’ve easily gotten blown out in by LSU !!!

One of the most overlooked parts of the 95 Nebraska team is the fact that they could absolutely throw the ball they just didn’t need to. One of the better pro style draft prospects in the country as their back up. Brook Berringer was being compared to Joe Montana and was absolutely gonna be drafted if his life wasn’t tragically cut short shortly before the 1996 NFL draft. Granted it wasn’t a great draft for qbs but that’s beside my main point that Nebraska’s lack of a passing attack had nothing to do with ability.
