No joke, I am citing this skit in my final essay in my Music History Class. I'm using it to draw a parallel between the great divide of modernism versus mainstream during the 20th century and the contemporary basic versus hipster cultural debate. They are basically the same arguments, and my essay basically takes the position of Brennan's character in this skit. You can like what you like. If listening to 4 and a half minutes of white noise is what you want to consider the pinnacle of art, more power to you. But when you look down on other people for wanting something a little more accessible, you prove yourself a hypocrite and an elitist. Am I taking this skit way too seriously? absolutely. But there are genuinely some beautiful bits of rhetoric in this that I think would be plagiarism not to disclose where I found it.

You’re right about not judging individuals for their taste, but there is a strong argument there has been a massive increase in the homogeneity of music since the US government lifted the limits on how many stations a company could own back in the 90s and Clearchannel went on a buying spree. They actually touch on one of the most important notion of sociology when they say that hipsters or people who are not “basic” have personalities that also are just reactionary manifestation of interaction or perception of their world views. yup and even rejecting doesn't make the individual any more unique or less "basic", reactionary subcultures often romanticize their own rebellion without realizing 1. as you said, their ideologies are formed in response therefor completely reliant on others and 2. individuals belonging to these groups typically just regurgitate the pre established points of view, making them just as sheepy as main streamers, even those professing individual identity still form their choices and views on a number of preset identity paths

@@rz1974 "regurgitate the pre established points of view," True for most hipsters, but in my case I never really found a "group" I felt comfortable with, not even on the internet. So I've spent my whole life trying to evaluate things on their individual merits, which of course makes my tastes a mixture of basic/hipster/super-weird, thus alienating me from all social groups. I don't know if that means I'm successfully following the middle path of the examined life, or if I'm just a gold-medalist at mental gymnastics trying to lay claim to the title of Ultimate Snowflake. But its not like I want to be different, its just really hard to find people that share my worldview.

Not necesarily. Your opinions and tastes could intersect and yet not be defined by the norm. To reject some parts and follow others in an amount expected from total randomness is the "true hipster"

@@LittleRedWhine I disagree, there is a moment in the song where the subject is given more depth, but the vast majority of the song is making fun of a woman for being basic. "Some random quote from Lord of the Rings, incorrectly attributed to Martin Luther King"- that's straight up just implying the woman is stupid. This is coupled with the video in which Bo Burnam holds a cup with 'Beyoncé is my spirit animal' on it, and wears culturally appropriative feathers- she is the target of the joke. We are meant to think that she's dumb, "incredibly derivative". It's nothing more than a white man making fun of a white woman, and hoping the "white" part disguises his misogyny.

At the same time, things aren't bad for not being basic. People aren't bad for disliking basic things. People are anti-basic for disliking basic things BECAUSE they are basic - and that's bad. Not evil, not scornworthy, but ite means that people would rather go against the flow than think for themselves. Like what you like because you like it. Not because others do. Or don't.

@@DrZaius3141 I'd argue liking basic things goes deeper than that, it's the safest path toward social acceptance. Liking "travel, music, and pizza" are introductory aspects about a personality that will ease people into getting to know you. So we shouldn't be so quick to judge.
@GreyAcumen3 жыл бұрын
@@DrZaius3141 - I'll take this a step further still. It's okay to like something basic because someone else likes it. It's entirely possible to not enjoy something, but enjoy the act of interacting with people via that thing you aren't really into. The ONLY problem is if A) you reject something because it isn't basic, and/or B) if you claim to like something basic when you genuinely don't enjoy it, just for social acceptance, and/or C) if you have absolutely nothing "non-basic" in your interests. This last one isn't a deal breaker, it's just that people aren't all the same, so if you don't have ANYTHING that you like that's unpopular, it may mean you haven't devoted enough time/energy into understanding and exploring your own interests while being genuine with yourself about those interests.
