The part of "Cathleen Calvert" (the lady in the car) was played by Shera Danese, who was Falk's wife at the time and 22 years his junior. She was in six episodes of Columbo and they were married around the time of her first appearance in the episode "Fade in to Murder" when she was 28 and he was 50. They remained married for 33 years until Falk's death in 2011. Her entire acting career existed only during her relationship with Falk. As Falk's conservator late in his life when he was deteriorating from Alzheimer's, she prevented his family from visiting him and even notifying them of his death. Thus, California passed the "Peter Falk's Law" which sets specific standards that conservators must follow under such circumstances. She is 72 years old as of this writing (2022.)

LAPD's ingratitude is stunning. Notwithstanding his outstanding track record, solving at least 69 murder cases without spending too much of police budget (his entertainment expenditure was limited to the cost of hot dogs for his witnesses for which he never failed to ask for receipt), Columbo remained in the rank of lieutenant to the day of his retirement. He could have made a deputy inspector at the least.

He didn't want any promotion. He loved his work - just the way he was. He said so many times.
@cooliod00d2 жыл бұрын
As Ivan stated, Columbo was humble and did not want a promotion. I'm not sure how exactly police hierarchy works in the states, since I'm from Germany, but my guess is that, as is true for most jobs, the more you get promoted, the less practical work you do. You tend to become a "pencil pusher", which wouldn't be a job for Columbo. He loves being "on the streets", solving cases.
@mmmoroi2 жыл бұрын
@@cooliod00d In a business corporation, sometimes a very competent sales person can be appointed as "playing manager", retaining the rank as manager (maybe senior manager) with higher salary, supervising his subordinate sales personnel, while he himself remain engaged in sales activities often responsible for major accounts. Given Columbo's unrivaled track record and contribution, LAPD could well have treated him like that, in which he could delegate his authority for supervision/administration to his deputy who can be a bean counter.
@Daremo69692 жыл бұрын
doubt it was LAPD making that determination, they would have just cut him loose. Columbo wanted to work cases, deputy inspector would have likely had responsibilities that took time away from what he wanted to do.
