This morning as you read Luke 1:17 I had one of those "burning bush" experiences. I stopped and turned. I read my patriarcal blessing, there my mission was spelled out so similar to the one of John! Now I understand my childhood, why I was born to my parents, why I was "different" from my friends. Why I was so sober and inclined to spiritual things, why I could not even stand the smell of wine (in Italy even children drink wine at dinner diluted with water), why I was interested in family history well before meeting the missionaries. It all makes sense now. Luke 1:17 is my mission: to prepare a people for the Lord. Thank you Brother Halverson for teaching me to stop and see.

I have finished all four videos that you’ve posted on the 400 years between the OT and the NT and now the two on our first come follow me assignment in the NT. I’m filled with such joy, not happiness but joy, and the Spirit is with me so strong! Now I have to go back and listen again and take notes. I want to write down the wealth of knowledge that you have and share with us! I read my scriptures but I just don’t understand what I’m reading…I just don’t understand. But when I hear you explain the scriptures I feel JOY! I can’t get enough! It’s like I’m starving! I want to write down what you say and then the thoughts that I have when you explain things. I feel like you’re saving my life brother Halverson. I can’t WAIT to learn more about my Savior Jesus Christ and my Father in heaven. I just can’t wait. I’ve never known anyone to love our Lord, our Father in heaven, and the scriptures as much as you do brother Halverson. Thank you for your time away from your family in the many hours of sacrifice that you put into making and getting these videos to me…to all who will listen. You are changing lives. You are most definitely guided by the Holy Ghost. D&C 18:15-16 15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father! 16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me! I pray for you and your family to be blessed in this world. I know that you’ll be blessed in heaven. Thank you brother Halverson and your family too. ❤

Wow! I can sense already that we are brothers and friends in Christ. I really enjoyed listening to the scriptures that you read, following along and being receptive to the Holy Ghost. There is a video produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that depicts the meeting of Elizabeth and Mary as well as a video which depicts the naming and blessing of John. My daughter and have watched the latter many, many times because she loves baby feet. at one point in the video a blanket is kicked away by the baby John and his feet slip out from under the blanket. She loves seeing John’s little feet. There are many things that you brought to my attention that I haven’t noticed before in Luke 1. You have an excellent gift for bringing the scriptures to life just like The Chosen. Oh, how I enjoy The Chosen! I am subscribed with notifications on! Thank you!

Your powerful testimony, scholarship, and ever-abiding commitment to the Savior has lifted me as well as grounded me. Yours is a voice of truth that I can count on. After listening to your comments about Mary, it made me think of a beautiful musical rendition of “my soul doth magnify the Lord.” It is from the oratorio Gloria: The Life of Christ/Jerusalem” by Lex de Acevedo. It was filmed in 1990 in front of the walls of the temple in Jerusalem. You can listen to it on KZbin. Start at minute marker 25:00 and go to 29:30. The words of her prayer and the sheer beauty of her voice make me weep every time. Surely, the Lord has done great things to all of us in our lives. I hope your listeners will take time to listen to this 4 minute gem. Thanks again for all you do!

Just started watching and thought I’d start with the New Testament. Regretting it now in a way cause I feel like I’ve missed so much learning about the Old Testament. Even so, I’ve been an inactive member for a while now, mostly by choice as I’ve allowed people to guide me away … no one’s fault but my own. I feel blessed to have family still in the church, who have recommended watching your videos; your knowledge of the gospel. It’s been a challenge ngl, listening to these videos though has given me a deeper understanding. I’m not ready to go back to church, cause I feel like I don’t deserve it. Being able to learn about Jesus’ light and life though, through these videos…it makes me want to be better, live better, if only so when I do meet him I can say I did my best to get back to how he wanted me to live. Thank you again for these videos 🥰

"That holy thing" always struck me as, "The main EVENT" that would change the world forever. I remember having this discussion with my kids when they were teens and the word, "Thing", seemed so natural to them. They had each said, "This would be the one thing that would change the lives of mankind forever", which totally made sense to me. It goes to show, I could learn a thing or two from teenagers. Lol.
@brettmajeske3525 Жыл бұрын
Language changes over time. While today the word "thing" usually means a non-person, usually either an object or concept, back at the time of the translation it could also mean a person (Shakespeare in his histories calls soldiers "things"). Originally it meant "a time for gathering" so "the main EVENT" is actually a rather interesting interpretation. "Thing" has the same root as both "time" and "tide" so that certainly works from an etymological perspective.

Sometimes I wonder if Elisabeth was really able to KNOW she was truly pregnant before Mary came. If she wasn't "regular" or even menstruating anymore she wouldn't really be able to count back, and if she was like me before I was finally able to have children, she may have convinced herself she was pregnant many times throughout her lifetime because she longed for it so much. A lot of things can feel like a baby kicking. As far as we know, there weren't any pregnancy tests. So she had faith and hope and a husband who couldn't talk. But when Mary came she not only had it confirmed to her by the undeniable Spirit that Mary was going to give birth to the Savior, but it was in a way that completely confirmed her pregnancy, also. I love this story of love, friendship and family ❤️

I like "reading" the scriptures through your eyes. I thought I knew the story of Mary, Joseph , Elizabeth and Zacharias until I heard you tell it. I like that you tell what their names mean. I especially like the meaning of Elizabeth's name for a selfish reason: my name is Elizabeth. Bless you. I am going to try to find the scripture that embodies my mission. I have often wondered why I was sent to earth. The closest I have come is spelled out in the song on page 230 in our hymnal. My mission is to scatter sunshine. I hate to admit it but I am not very fond of Patriarchal bless. Maybe some day I will appreciate it.

I also enjoy this podcast series. I was struck by the description of the four different Gospel books. A thought came to mind as we began to spend time with Elizabeth this week and Mary next week: The scriptures were written by males and translated by males. As a female, I am constantly having to find myself in the scriptures. I have several female friends who struggle with reading the scriptures because the messages don't speak to women in the way women interact with their environment. We can see the differences in General Conference addresses by women and to women versus the men.

Indeed, can we take time to be holy? President Nelson once said that "service in the temple is the crown jewel of ALL our service in the kingdom of God." For me, even just standing in the empty halls of the Nauvoo Temple, where I serve,, have become moments to savor. If we let them, even these quiet moments allow cleansing tides to wash over us which then become those 'times of holiness' so very much needed to remain "unshaken" when we are outside those sacred walls. Thanks for sharing your wife's Vegas experience.

More than 30 years ago a man from India scoffingly asked me if I believed that Mary could have actually been a virgin. I gave him the very same answer you presented. If humans can grow embryos and then emplant them in a woman, without sex being involved, it is definitely possible for God, who created all things, to take care of that. The man nodded his head and that was the end of the conversation.

Just a thought came to me as you were teaching about Joseph and Mary to Zachariah and Elizabeth. Could Mary by chance be a Levite considering Elizabeth was? If they were related.. possibly the Savior was the house of David as well as a levite.. making him king and priest too??? Food for thought?

While I really enjoyed your presentation, as someone who studied Jacobean literature/language, I am going to be a bit pedantic about the usage of the word "thing". While it is used in the modern vernacular to mean "an object", it originally meant "a time for gathering". A gathering of people from multiple clans was known as a "thing" or "thingmeet". By the time of King James the word had expanded to include people generically without the pejorative objectification associated with such usage today. Thingmeet being treated as 'a meeting of things' instead of 'a time of meetings'. It is likely that the word is derived from the same etymology as "tide", "time", and even "tense". A "Holy Thing" at the time of King James would be understood to mostly likely be a person, whereas today it sounds more like an object or even a concept. Much as the word "one" is an indeterminate pronoun, so too the word "thing" could have been used. I do not know about the Greek or Hebrew, my linguistic area of expertise is in medieval/ renaissance English and French, so I do not know to what that degree that is accurate to the Greek text.

@42:42 - Zacharias didn't just not accept what was "coming into his ears" - he outright scoffed at it and he *demanded* *a* *sign* . (Whereby shall I know this?) Big mistake. Being struck dumb was the "sign" he was given. When Mary asked, "how can this be?" - Unlike Zacharias, she wasn't expressing disbelief, she wanted to understand the "how".

And by adoption or the Law of adoption as those who are sealed in the temple to thier parents recieve all the blessings etc as though they had been born..... My children are both adopted. They bear my name and are legally mine and have legal claim on all that is mine when I am gone. God the Father recognize them as mine and has given me the responsibility for them.

Luke 1:17, He who also go before Him in the spirit and power of ELIJAH, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient in the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Elijah's power and spirit was upon John the Baptist, Jesus speaks of this in Matthew 17:11-13 The prophets ask the Lord, when will Elijah come and Jesus said he has already come, the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist and the power and spirit of Elijah. The spirit of Elijah was upon John the Baptist who led the way for Jesus and His ministry. Mormonism believes in Gods, Polytheism, that God the Father, the Son of God, the Holy Spirit are three separate Gods, Christians believe That the trinity is three persons, God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit are one God, Monotheism, the trinity is demonstrated in the birth of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God is overshadowed on Mary, the trinity is also witnessed at Jesus's baptism, and through out the bible. The Literal word used in the birth of Jesus makes one to wonder what this means; it is stated in LDS doctrine by the president Ezra Taft Benson. The body in which He (Jesus) performed His mission in the flesh was sired by that Holy Being we worship as God, our eternal Father, nor was He begotten by the Holy Ghost. The teachings of Ezra Taft Benson p7.

It is interesting to me that the women, Mary and Elizabeth, both had no doubt. Both men doubted.

Just had an epiphany about Mary’s “overshadowing” by the Holy Ghost… it’s very similar (if not identical) to Adam when the Lord “caused a deep sleep to come upon him” and took from him a rib and made Eve. If God can create Adam from the dust and breathe life into him, then why would He do any differently in the case of Jesus?

Oh my gosh! Also the fact that she was in Judah for a few months helping Elisabeth probably gave rise to most of the nasty rumors in Nazareth when she was “found with child” when she got home 😢

I always thought that Mathew, Luke and John were witness accounts of The Lord. They were written AD? And at separate times? Maybe I'm just confused. Can anyone help to explain? Matthew, Mark, Luke & John weren't there?

With regards to Mary's pregnancy? Yes...some people think about that ...the process of being impregnated. When you said about "God is one step ahead from the way we are knowing conception occurs...the process of those others gone through just to conceive, as?Science and Technology intervention for these possibilities? But as you have said..it's God's. This is Vilma the wife of late Rolando.

I don't think Zacharias's imposed silence was a punishment. It was a gift. "Here is how I will help you believe". Gabriel could have said, "fine, don't believe me, see if I care" and left, and Zacharias would have been left to his own devices, never having this amazing tool to help grow his faith. So I caution against calling his chastisement "punishment" - punishment has little purpose other than fulfilling justice, this is not that. Also, when the priest exits the temple, he is supposed to say some words (I don't remember what though). Zacharias couldn't fulfill that duty, being unable to speak. That would have made a lot of people take notice...

I would like to emphasize very strongly that sex is sacred. The idea of wicked salaciousness comes from the evil misuse of the sacred act.
