Hi Kat! I have a theatre predicament and maybe members of the cult may be able to help? Anyways, I’m the only person of color in my theatre group, and I’m constantly being told that “Im not the right look” for roles. Im constantly feeling “othered” and being rejected for roles (especially when I have to look similar to other people). I love my theatre group, but I’d love to hear your advice ☺️

I really, really hope that isn’t the reason you’re not getting the roles but I can’t say for certain it’s not without knowing the people who are casting it. Unless race is central to a role/show (like the roles in Hairspray or Ragtime) there’s absolutely no reason why a talented actress of color shouldn’t be cast in role traditionally played by a white person. As to what you can do about it, unfortunately, I don’t think there’s much you can do other then keep working on your craft. Hopefully, there are other theatre groups in your area for which you can audition. It may take some time to get noticed (especially for a young woman in theatre; guys do tend to have it easier because there are fewer of us interested in musical theatre but even then, in some areas, the competition is fierce) but the cream always rises to the top. Just commit to playing every role to the best of your ability and keep an upbeat, friendly attitude.
