So when I hear someone talk about a loved one who is gone, while I used to think "that's sweet", now I think... I don't have a word for it. But I understand it differently, and there's a certain beauty in the sadness.

I have memories that I would readily call "bittersweet", but that doesn't really cover the understanding I have for how others feel in a similar situation. But, I know that sooner or later we all come to have that understanding, maybe we don't see it as "beautiful", but we know that sadness. Whether it's a parent or sibling or close friend or mentor, there's that person that you're not just sorry they're gone, but you genuinely miss them.

That's family for ya. Some cops came for my uncle one night. I was at work and missed the whole thing, but my mother and older sister told me all about it. My uncle was staying with us and we had no idea he was in trouble. When the cops came, it was my 11 year old sister who answered the door, and on the spot lied for my uncle, "Nope, he's not here, haven't seen him.". (I was 18 and wouldn't have thought so quickly) Our fool uncle got spooked and came bursting out of a bedroom, ran down the longest hall you've ever seen in a house, and tried to jump out the window. The cops ran through the house after him and caught him by the legs as he dived out a window. What was so funny is my little sister and toddler brother were right on the cops' heels, not wanting to miss the action. My older sister had already gone to bed when she said was awakened by someone running past her door. She got up, opened the door and was stunned when a cop ran past her, then another, then our little sister and baby brother. Our mom said it was so fast and surreal, that they'd caught my uncle before she had even gotten off the couch. Later, you could ask my baby brother where Uncle Steve was. He'd say, " Uncle Stebe in jail.".
