My favorites for the year thus far: 1) probably going to make my top 5 for the year is My Favorite Thing is Monsters. I know you thought it meandered but I loved every page of it. 2) Calamity Jane. I'm not finished with it yet, I'm about 2/3s done, but this translation of the French graphic novel has some really nice line work and I think the writer builds each scene well with a lot of focus on character. 3+4) A lot depends on how these finish but both Mister Miracle and Doomsday Clock are hitting all the right notes for me up to now. Edit: I know you are also keeping up on books so I will add a couple here as well. 5) Educated: a Memoir by Tara Westover is an amazing tale well told. 6) Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. I read this on audiobook which he read himself. I am a fan of humor and stand up and this had everything I hoped it would have and surprisingly a very moving ending. 7) We Were Eight Years in Power by Ta Nehisi Coates. I think he is a better essay writer than fiction writer, and one of the best essayists we have at the moment. 8) The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein a non-fiction book about how the laws in the USA were engineered to keep black people in ghettos. 9) The Future is History by Masha Gessen A brief history and sociological study of Putin's Russia. 10) Russian Roulette by Michael Isikoff and David Korn The best book I've read yet about the Trump administration.

Hey Anatole. Yeah, let's not talk about the Monsters. We can agree that I'm the odd one, who just don't get it ;) Your 2 is by Christian Perrissin, I remember that I started to read Cape Horn and found it to be... decent, but since I never finished it... Still, I'm intrigued now to return to it! 3+4, I agree. Have to catch up on both, but especially Doomsday Clock was such a surprise hit in my books. I have completely (well, almost) changed my mind about Geoff Johns now. 6, I've heard good things about Educated! 7. Nah, I don't feel Coates. Tried it, clever guy, writes well (essays, like you mention), but his view on things I don't share and am not interested in them (anymore). Re: Colonialism, Racism, etc I'm reading Age of Anger by Pankaj Mishra right now. Not always agreeing with his conclusions but it's undeniably a highly interesting, non-western look at history since the enlightenment. And since you mention Putin, have you heard about Vory: Russia's Super Mafia by Mark Galeotti? It's about how Russian gulags birthed the now notorious mafia structures in modern-day Russia. I've heard the author on a podcast and it was weirdly fascinating how extreme and deep the history of the Vory is. I also got interested in the book by Gessen. Hey, that was fun! Thanks for the recommendations, man!!!

Cool! We have to spread the word, it's selling quite OK for a Image book, but should be read my MANY MORE people!

They really need to hook Kelly Jones up with a top level writer! Whew. glad you liked Ice Cream Man. It's kind of radical pop horror...or something! Great video thoughts as ever.

Astonishing X-Men annual was odd indeed. Though #15 was again very nice in my opinion.

Yeah, will pick it up next week from my LCS

Most of the time I think Marvel is on the right track again, but every now and then you feel cheated. Often this has to do with very poor art: this annual, Marvel 2-in-1 and the horrendous in Wolverine; Mystery in Madripoor (even though this was last minute replacement for Bachalo due to the death of his wife). But besides the Donny Cates stuff I think Immortal Hulk, West Coast Avengers, Domino and Extermination amongst others are very interesting titles at the moment.

Yes, 2-in-1 war horrendously drawn, Pichellis FF is a complete mismatch in my eyes (I've read some of her Spider-Man and liked it), whatever X-Book I was sampling (well, this is an over-generalisation, but semi-valid)... And the prices go up, the constant relaunching doesn't stop, constant events and hype, myriad of 5$-one-shots to go with them... It seems they want to milk whatever is left of the fandom RIGHT NOW. Thanks for the suggestions. WCA I sampled and it was not for me. Domino I will check in trade and Extermination had that cool BDSM cover recently, so I might go check that first ;)

The prices go up! it sounds like we're getting old ;) I guess that's also what people said in the late 80's and 90's.
@WaltsComicBookChannel6 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, we do! And it has been often debated, looks like the biggest price hike (if you count in inflation) happened back in the 90s. But it's still quite an expensive hobby compared to other media, that's for sure.

Not reading ICM, never had even heard of it, but I am going to check it out now based on your recommendation. Have you ever read Ice Cream Bus by Junji Ito?
@WaltsComicBookChannel6 жыл бұрын
Haha, no. Also haven't even read Uzumaki yet (I know I know, I just grabbed it from the shelf and put it on my reading pile. Again.). But I couldn't find it on Amazon? I guess it's not translated, yet, at least not officially ;)

Ice Cream Man looks and sounds AMAZING! You borderline spoiled it a little, but really helped selling it. Seeing you THIS excited is a rarety. So gonna read it. You bashing marvel for selling a monthly 70someting pages book for 8 bucks, i don’t really understand. For fans its a good thing. If you split it into 2 regular comics its 4 bucks. So you get more for less and more frequently. I believe that was the thought behind this. Probably a series doing well? Fans will be excited, i think. But myself, haven't read a marvel book in like 10 years, so what the hell do i know ;)

Because it's probably 30 pages of proper story, another 20 pages of fluff and the rest is just ads and bullshit. If it'd be 72 story pages that MATTER nobody would mind it, but it's nothing more than a get-rich-quick-scheme, and since the #1 issue is making the most of the profit, so the incentive to maximize is big.
