Came back to this vid after my 2007 2.Slow Beetle crossed 310k miles, I still love my little yellow bug. Just keep up with regular maintenance, use good quality parts and change the timing belt and water pump regularly and the car will last virtually forever. These are very reliable engines if a bit slow, especially with the automatic trans.

I had a 2012 jetta with the 2.slow and it got me 150k pretty much trouble free miles before someone totaled it this summer. It would have gone another 150k I’m sure of it. Way back in the days of the mk1 & mk2 golf/jetta they were considered to be one of the best engines for economy and strength, if well maintained, but nowadays I wouldn't want to own one, all this drive for technology and management of emissions has spoiled a great reputation...

@@HumbleMechanic Just passed 200k! Only complaint now... the oil coolers don't last and obviously freak you out when there's oil in the coolant not to mention it takes a lot of work to get it all out. Blue Devil sells a radiator flush with an additive to remove oil as well; my heater core started working again too! 😁 As for the fuel, Costco actually has very high quality fuel belive it or not. Then the distributor and the oil cooler, get them from autozone with the lifetime warranty. Outside of rather expensive maintenance, this car has only cost me roughly 1200 in all repairs from day one. Hell, one big upside to the MK6 jetta too, the fuel pump and heater core are also very cheap things in terms of labor which is so rare for a newer vehicle. IMO, VW went simple and boring but boring is good when it comes to repairs. Thank you so much for being an awesome source for VW information, as you know VW tries to make everything nothing short of an enigma getting any information. Oh, folks might be interested in knowing how to flush the cooling system on these. Super easy after days of research but no GOOD videos on it. I did the method of adding distilled water to my reservoir while draining from the return line.
@Gmeister515
@Gmeister515 2 жыл бұрын
@@AltruisticWarrior hey so im assuming you replaced the heater core at some point? im about to do the rear brake pads and discs on my 2012 2.SLOW, 6-spd AUTO-Magic, rotate wheels and tires, and also have to flush the cooling system. the heater core hasnt worked since i got the vehicle and all fluids and stuff were brand new also when purchased. but coolant is slightly low and now brownish pinkish in color. was going to just flush the cooling system and then read something about clogged/bad heater cores can cause dirt and sediment to go throughout cooling system so i was thinking about just bypassing it but if its not too hard to replace? any insight on that?
@AltruisticWarrior
@AltruisticWarrior 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gmeister515 if you're doing a flush, just take the extra time to replace it. Mine has meagerly worked for the last year but I love the cold... like still run the AC when it's 29 degrees outside in CO. 😆😅 I live in NV and AZ though so sidnt really care. Only reason I'll be replacing it is I have a 1 year old son. If you're already flushing, put the extra time into doing that AND the oil cooler because if you don't, you'll probably have oil in your coolant soon enough if you still have the OEM. Both the oil cooler and the heater core are stupid easy on this car compared to most. Even the fuel pump is a 30 min job. Oh but do get the OEM heater core unless you want to replace it more often. Great damn car outside of the little nagging things though. This engine is used heavily in South America and it's very well known for reliability. Also used in some forklifts where the engine can easily see 600~700k hours without a hiccup. There's a teardown video of this engine(CBPA) and it's easy to see why it's amazing.
@AltruisticWarrior
@AltruisticWarrior 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gmeister515 but yah, brown coolant potentially indicates an oil cooler that's on it's way out. They only last 80k or so. Imperative to replace though as technically when you turn the engine off the pressure from the coolant side can push coolant into the engine as when it's running the opposite is true.

Hey Charles. I totally agree about the ABA engine being almost indestructible. Awesome but gutless. The issues with 99-05 2.0 was throttle bodies not adapting and I've replaced lots of them when I worked for vw in omaha. I left in 04, so I don't know much of the newer ones. I worked for vw when vag5051 was the cream of the crop for diagnosis on vw. Too bad they can't go back to cable throttle body. Very little problems I've noticed

I was looking at a VW Jettas. I test drove a 2014 with the 1.8 T, a 2012 with the 2.5 L, and a 2013 with the 2.0 L. The 2.0 is one of the most sluggish engines I've ever experienced. I was at a complete stop, and I had to get it to about 4000 RPM before it would start accelerating. I personally hated the feel of it. While im sure its a great engine it has no power whatsoever. As for the 2.5 L and 1.8 T, I loved driving both. The 2.5 is a little heavier and has more horsepower and was louder, which was more similar to my old V8 mustang than the other two. The 1.8 T is my personal favorite. Light, efficient, great torque.

@@noplugace1628 aside from regular maintenance costing a premium because it' sport, I replaced the engine after 120k miles, replaced the transmission flywheel twice. consumes oil like a motha***** and parts on it dont last. I almost forget to mention that electrical parts on it suck, so much so that it literally burnt my car's computer. My car quickly went on theft-mode. I had to replace the wire harness around the engine and set up a new key and shortly after had to replace something inside the engine. you see these on sale often because they deteriorate after 120k miles. it's fun to drive but never in a million years, unless I can afford 3 infiniti's at once, would i consider ever buying one.

I'm pretty sure the previous owner of my AVH engine never changed the spark plugs so they looked pretty rough at 135K. I've never had an issue with spark plugs on it since replacing them (203K now). Never had a problem with bad gas or a clogged fuel filter, though I think east coast fuel tends to be better than say California gas from what I hear. Problems I HAVE had: coilpacks, ignition switchs, plug wires breaking on removal them because they become so brittle, vacuum lines, suspicious amounts of oil in the intake/manifold despite using good quality synthetic oil.

2003 VW Jetta 2.0 purchased for 500$ from a one owner. Had a misfire at cylinder four that burnt out the flex tube. Replaced all injectors, plugs and the exhaust. No further codes being thrown. No leaks as far as fluid. Sat for about two years before I even messed with it. Seems to be running well after the repairs. Interior is perfect but the clear coat is failing. Any advice on my next mods should be? Was thinking cold air intake. Thx subbed

Can you tell me where the PCV valve assembly can be found on a 2008 VW City Golf (Canadian Market)? I think it was just a simple Mark 4 that VW carried on in Canada from 2007-2010 and kept the price low while it introduced other engines in the US market. I've looked all over and can't find it, so suspect I have to take off the intake manifold to find it. Thanks

Planning to pick up an OBD1 ABA soon, gonna run it with an OBD2 harness and a turbo. Gonna have to run some heavier Liqui-Moly oil, and stop being cheap with fuel. 91 octane Shell instead of the ? octane fuel I'm getting from the local independent station now.

Hi! Mk6 GTI,2012, thanks to this car it's hurt me to hell and I can't wait to find a time to trade it in cause value has plummeted. I've had the engine rebuilt due to the fact it sucked the oil netting up the sump while also snapping the timing chain retentioner, I've watched my water pump melt before my eyes, I've actually had my intake manifold have the flaps break and blow a hole through the manifold, I've had my intercooler and turbo pipe crack on me, and I'm currently trying to save the money up for a clutch job cause the DM flywheel is making a small sound. 89k as of May 2019, stock tune. As much as I love this car......I'm never owning another Volkswagen again.

However, I replaced parts at 115K miles, like: Ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, valve gasket, fuel filter and MAF sensor - cost me total about 250$ parts - It's 2021 now and car is still on the road. The problem I could not fixed: front left ABS light is ON, changed ABS sensor as well as front rotors and hubs, still comes back. Maybe ABS wire itself? any suggestion? Thanks...

Can bad spark plugs cause an irregular idle, while the engine is running fine otherwise? I mean that in idle, the tachometer is moving up and down slightly around the 850rpm mark, maybe between 830 and 880 or something like that...Or is that normal, and these old ECUs (it's a '99, basically mk3 technology) didn't "smooth out" the signal that's going to the tach yet?

I'm debating on getting a Mark 4 Jetta VR6. I found a 2000 Jetta VR6 for $900. Timing chains and guides were done 3 years ago, runs and drives well. 160k miles, needs a muffler though. I checked it out and it was pretty rusty on the fenders and had some on the side skirts. There was a bit of oil under the car and I noticed a bit of oil on the left side of the motor (I guess technically the front) so it leaks a bit of oil for sure. I also noticed a power steering boot was leaking a bit as well. Other than that, it was pretty awesome. What do you think, it it cheap enough to pick up as a winter beater? Thanks again for all you do! You the man.

Charles, I need a gas saver to drive back and forth to work as my Suburban just isn't cutting it. I've heard some great things about Volkswagen and some not so great things, and I know very little about them outside of about a pre 1973 bug. What would you recommend? Are there any models that are still fairly simple to work on and maintain myself like I do with Suburban and Chevy Nova? I've heard several people say to get around an 03 Jetta or something similar. Any help would be greatly appreciated please and thanks.
