Thanks for the thorough video. I have a 2005 silverado and aside from the u-joints, I have had and fixed everyone of these issues. My truck has 150k miles and I love it. My brother in law has a twin of my truck and every issue I had, he had within 5k miles. All these issues are easy to fix or not extremely costly. I'll keep fixing random things opposed to paying $58k for the new one. Chevy proud.

I have owned eight shitter trucks in a row! One of which came from a ford dealer. Bought it on a sunny day only to find out the truck wouldnt run in the rain.. seriously. They wanted $165 just to look at it...sat in the dooryard til the repo man came..woulnt start for him either. After 10 yrs of no truck the girlfriend got me a 2011 silverado x cab with 80,000 miles on it. This was well taken care of and runs like a charm,, extremely helpful to watch you tell me what to look out for seeing as I havent had it up in the air yet! Fantastically helpful..please dont stop making these videos!!! Good video. People get so polarized in their blind brand loyalty that they forget that EVERY vehicle has common problems. You could make a similar video talking about F150 Triton spark plugs, fuel pump module corrosion, 4x4 hub actuators, and a whole host of other issues they have. Same thing with Dodge, or the Tundras, or the Titans.... Doesn't matter, EVERYTHING HAS COMMON PROBLEMS!

Honestly most KZbin trolls probably wouldn't even let that change their opinion lol. I'll tell you what though, living in the northeast you see some crazy freaking rust on everything. So many trucks rolling down the road with beds flapping in the wind and cracked frames and stuff. I've been to Alaska though and although you guys don't use salt your roads are tore up and rutted worse than ours. We get pot holes and crap but you guys get actual grooves in the roads. Both suck for your vehicles. I also noticed everyone has cracked windshields up there. Some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen in my life though.

Stud rutts (from studded tires) are the worst! It's only going to get worse since the state is going bankrupt from lack of oil tax revenue. Now the roads are really going to go to crap. No mandatory safety inspection either so you don't even need a windshield here. Just some ski goggles and enough balls to drive the Seward highway in a snow storm. Haha. Trust me, I have seen just that.

I forget the name of it but I visited a little town like 40 min south of anchorage if i remeber correctly that has a tunnel through a mountain to go in and out that was one way for cars and a train. they just synced it so that you could only come and go at certain times. we then took a cruise to see the glaciers. Those images are engraved in my mind.

Great video. I noticed you didn't have enough time to go into what parts you'd suggest on for the front end. I'd highly suggest Moog, they are built to last a long time. Another common problem with these trucks is the upper intermediate shaft bearing located in the lower steering column where the upper intermediate shaft bolts to the lower steering column. These bearings go bad and produce a clunking noise when turning. Most dealerships want to charge you for a complete steering shaft. Don't let them get away with charging you more money: 9 times out of 10, it's the $20.00 plastic bearing. The other thing to watch out for in the 4x4 models is the grounding strap located under the driver seat on the frame rail. This is where your 4x4 computer grounds to and if this starts to corrode, you wont' have communication between the 4x4 computer and related parts like the encoder and front actuators. The 4L60 E is weak and so is the gov loc (G80) locker. Don't hammer on them too hard, especially on the pavement. Also if you start getting a weird rattling noise coming from under the vehicle and think it's the transfer case, check the driveline and U-joints FIRST. Your transfer case is pretty strong, however, if you have the Autotrak, it's going to need an updated bearing kit and BRNY wear plate so you don't get pump rub, which eats a hole in your transfer case. These are great trucks, you just have to properly maintain them and even upgrade them from the factory specs at times. Great video though man, keep up the good work!!!

Anytime I have a 120K plus chev in here I don't bother trying to sell the updated transfer case pump wear clip and just wait till it blows a hole in it and throw a goodwrench reman in it. The only reason I say that is that I don't typically tear into the cases since after I open them up they need everything anyway and it's cheaper just replacing it. If you're a DIY guy it sure could save you some cash just installing the updated pump clip. Great call on Moog parts. That's all I use. Thanks for the input. Take care.

I'm at 300,000 miles with my Silverado had to replace both bearings in the front a arms and just had to replace fuel pump just starting to have a few issues but got to love this truck probably 1000 dollars in repairs in 19 years and vert easy to work on thanks gmc

DoctorD907 I have a 04 silverado 4.3 base model. Just had cats replaced along with plugs and maf sensor . Issue I'm having is slow acceleration. I can literally floor it from a dead stop and it takes so long to get to even 35mph which where I will kinda start to see power but even then I'm constantly in and out of passing gear just to keep up with traffic. It's even worse when towing my 5x8 utility trailer please any help would be appreciated.

+Ken Blackwood also if you do find a trustworthy shop to take it you might have some idea of what sounds like a legitimate issue if they inspect and tell you about the items they found. Anyways let us know what if anything you identify. Ask around about local shops. Check online for reviews. Steer clear of the big franchise stores and go with local small shops and mom and pop businesses that have established businesses. They are more likely to care about keeping their customers happy and only employ techs who follow their philosophy. Take care and thanks for watching.

I have 383,000 miles on my Silverado 2000. I'd love to find someone as competent as you here in my town. Can't even find any shops that can diagnose a simple "no heating" problem. They replaced the thermostat to "see if that fixed it", but of course it didn't. Still cold as can be in the cab. Thanks for your video.

Reading all the comments below makes me wonder if I will ever buy another truck in my life! (LOL) My 1946 GMC is probably the best truck I ever owned, easy to work on and maintain, might have to go back to it for my daily driver. As I wrote below my 05 chevy has some rust issues but I'm lucky that when I ordered the truck I wanted a 5 speed manual(GM hasn't made a good auto since the TH-400). Of course GM wouldn't let you get the 5.3 with a manual tranny so I settled for the 4.8. Thank God that happened as I don"t have any issues with the manual tranny and the 4.8 has been trouble free. My 4x4 was ordered without the electric push button bullshit actuator. I figured for 800 bucks I could reach down with my right hand and pull a lever about 6 inches. Again thank God I'm a tight ass so I don't have all the electrical horror stories with the transfer case. It seems like that is a lot of the problems with GM trucks from 88 on, all sorts of switches and actuators go to shit and then it's chasing down shorts and all sorts of Gremlins. Also no electric windows, locks, seats, but warmers, etc. etc... Get in any truck that has been used for farm/construction work that has all the BS bells and whistles and you find half the switches don't work anymore and wiring harnesses are hanging all over the place. Also the cheap ass plastic GM/Ford/Dodge/Toyota/etc. interiors crack and break. Lots of comments about the 5.3 engine too. I never owned one but know lots of people that want to shove them up GM's ass. Good friend of mine has a 2012(I think) with the 8-6-4 or whatever the cylinder cut out is called and at 25,000 miles he basically had to threaten to sue GM to get a new motor. He keeps his vehicles in immaculate condition and treats them with kid gloves, I kid you not the truck looked like it came off the lot when it had 30k on it and the motor was still a POS. I guess it's only getting worse as the Govt. is requiring more electronic bullshit on new cars. I'll keep my old stuff and run them in the ground.

I hear what your saying, and agree.. I bought a 2005 brand new bare bones, has 5 speed manual trans. 4.3 v-6 manual 4-wd engagement and crank up windows.. It's been a great dependable truck. It has about 75,000 miles on it and I change the oil every 4,000 miles. I also do all my own work, the only complaint I have it's a little under powered at times.. However, the pros. to the 4.3 is you have plenty of working space, everything is easy to get to..

Joseph M Joseph. I live in central Iowa and bought my 1/2 ton brand new in 05. I had it Ziebarted with about 80 miles on it and have always tried to wash it and keep it clean. This damn salt brine they started to put on the roads in the 1990's is killing cars and trucks in the Midwest. I have only had trouble with body parts(Rockers and cab corners) so far. I also had the front right hub go bad right before Christmas. Am going to replace rockers and corners and Linex the bottom 1/3rd of truck. I hope this will get me 10 to 15 years before the body goes to hell. Good luck with your truck.

I have a 1999 GMC Sierra ext cab, short bed with the 5.3 engine, Z71 4X4 with 130,000 on it. The transmission went around 100,000 miles. I had been towing a 5,200 pound camping trailer with it for a number of years in the summer. I bought the truck new. I keep it in tip top shape and it's been an excellent truck for me. I replaced the AC unit last year. You can hang meat in the cab now, lol. For what a new truck costs I'll be keeping old "99" until I die. Thank you for your most informative video.

Hi there, I would like to share my "service 4wd" experience with you so that you may share it on your channel (I don't make videos). I started my car two days ago to find the "service 4wd" message in the dash of my 03 silverado LS(5.3L Z71). I looked at the transfer case switch to find no indicator lights were on, however the backlighting to display 2HI , 4Auto... were coming on at night. So i looked on youtube and found a video on how to check your swtich (). I check the resistance across each button as you showed and got the same numbers described in the video. Once I ruled out the switch I directed my attention to the Transfer Case Control Module. I was able to use a scanner (OBD Scanner that was not cheap was $1000 and still considered low end), that would read TCCM codes, however I got the msg "no communication". This worried me as I know on alldatadyi they suggest this means the TCCM must be defective and to replace. Remembering my OBD port fuse (cig lighter fuse) blowing and seeing the same msg (no communication) I tried replacing the 4wd fuse at the side of the dash, but again no luck. Finally I saw on many forms that a bad ground could also be the cause. This made sense as not having a good ground is the same as blowing a fuse (no power = no communication). So I went under my truck to the body mount under the A-pillar on the drivers side, to find it was caked in grease from under coating, I took it off, cleaned the bolt and scraped the contact area clean, removed any paint, and it worked! Problem solved, all indicator lights come on when I first turn on and only the 2HI stays on as that was my last selected mode. (tested all other modes and to make sure they work fine) So in conclusion: Problem: "service 4wd" msg on dash. Symptoms: no indicator lights on(little yellow lights beside 4Auto 2H...), no communication with TCCM when hooked up to "expensive" scanner (not crapy tire). Solution: cleaned ground wire and contact area on body mount under driver's side A-pillar. Lesson learned: start with KISS (keep it simple stupid) method always, save a lot of money potentially. Thanks for posting your video. Hope my post helps others who have my issue. If you can't get your hand on a scanner that can read TCCM code, its worth the money to go to your mechanic or last resort dealer to see what codes they get, from that point everything seems pretty easy to do yourself, other than replacing transfer case. FYI: TCCM is under the dash right behind the OBD port for my 03 silverado. Just so people with this year aren't looking to take apart the whole dash if they have this model year. You can easily access it without taking the dash apart. might have to remove the parking brake "release" lever from the under side of the dash as the cable goes foward and runs across the TCCM, making it harder to remove the TCCM. Always good to check for rust/corrosion on the connectors to the TCCM before deciding the TCCM is defective; and the ground cable as I said above. I love my 2001 Z71 despite having to replace parts of the vehicle (RF wheel hub) that I feel can be expected considering that I drive this truck like a teenager or better said, the 17 year inside me that just won't give up. front wheel bearings, stuck temperature control on the dual zone heater control to hot setting, starter, catalytic converters. full brake job all around, which i see as normal wear and tear. these all needed to be replaced on my 04 Silverado with less than 75000 miles. sold it when it needed a inner tie rod, because the water pump was probably going to go soon too. no more silverados for me.

Opinions vary, I have had nothing but good service out of my Silverado's, three in 23 years and spent very little $$ on them, you can get a bad one in anything , I bought a new ford truck in 1978 it was the biggest POS I have ever owned . Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Honda put a 60,000mile warranty on powertrain GM puts 100,000 on theirs .! Go figure!

I've got 2014 GMC 5.3 With 50k miles I've always kept oil changes and she's never towed. My wife and I have a very special place in our heart for this truck. She's a full cab and Sonoma red with a chrome and leather package SLT🥰 She was one the first of the 2014 . I'm a professional vehicle detailer and our trucks are always in showroom condition. We wish we have someone like YOU ! Who knows that what they're doing 😉 We just bought a 2020 Chevrolet High Country 2500. my 04 silverado with 5.3 vortec we had to replace the heads at 120k miles,Gm had a bad casting run and it cracked right around the headstud causing coolant and oil to mix thankfully it was only 1,000$ and not worse and that was with us doing the work

If your truck has not exhibited any of these problems you might be one of the lucky ones, you may drive it in a way that does not cause these parts to wear or fail like most others or the conditions in the areas where it has been driven are been favorable. Does it have the IWE hubs? I didn't even think they still used those. I have seen that issue. I have a video on a Lincoln Navigator with similar problem. It was a vacuum leak.

Yea sadly ford uses it , they say there is a fix for this vacuum hose with protective silicon wrapped around it , correct me if am wrong , becuase i may do this the original replacement park may take 3-4 weeks

Intake gaskets leak coolant also. Harmonic balancer comes apart, oil pump o-ring flattens out causing low oil pressure...

This is the first of your videos I've seen but I plan to watch more. I have a definite lemon in my 1999 Silverado 4x4. I do not drive this truck hard at all and have had to put two new transmissions in it and that after the original was recalled! So many "nickel and dime" parts have broken and I'm amazed how many are plastic the bed latch for instance. I have lights out sporadically all through out the inside and yes I have checked fuses and replaced some but that was not it. For example only some of my stereo buttons have a backlight. Also the power locks quit working on the driver door and only some directions work on the mirrors. The dome light fuse which is actually the "bulb" broke loose from its' plastic anchors inside the cover and the fuse melted the cover in a large spot-things like that. I too am feeling more than hearing a grinding under my accelerator foot and I just had a $1,000 brake job done last year, but I'm still feeling that so I will have my mechanic check the things you talk about. I also have had a very jumpy accelerator pedal since day one(My ex bought this truck right off the floor) and no one has fixed it yet. The things that cranks the spare up under the truck was plastic and it broke, my glove box latch is broken, the under hood light broke within the first year...Guess I just wanted to vent and also to thank you for your videos. Here's praying I win the lottery so I can cremate my piece of crap truck!!

Those are certainly common issues with the silverados prior to 2000. They fixed a lot of those issues but now the things I pointed out are more common. Ball joints and brakes are problematic on the older chev trucks like yours. Transmissions were a weak link and still have issues. And those door lock actuators. Haha. Let's not get into the intake gasket failures. Haha

AMAZING!!! 3 years ago I bought a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4. I have replaced all 4 brakes (pads, calipers, and rotors), all 4 brake lines, pitman arm, inner and outer tie rods, both 'U' joints, the water pump, AND have a coolant leak somewhere that I can't find. Of the list you described the only thing I haven't had trouble with is the ABS sensor and/or wheel bearings. For the record I'm in Massachusetts and as far as I know the truck spent it's entire life here. No evidence of ever having a plow attached.

Rust is what got the brake lines and brakes. But other than that it's not too bad underneath. Bottom of the driver's door is rotten (from the inside out so I think it's a window seal problem) but the rest of the 'skin' looks good. The frame rails look spotless, and the bed, axles, driveshaft, and bumpers are all still fine. No leaks in the cab.

I've got a 2005 I bought brand new and Ziebarted it the first week. Wash it regularly, only 77000 miles and keep it in shed and it is getting ready for new rockers and cab corners! 1/2 ton 4x4 regular cab, rest of the truck no rust and no major problems. Rear u joint went out at 30K miles, only real fuck up. Am going to fix rust and Line-x the bottom quarter of truck to see if I can get another 10 to 15 years out of the body before it rusts of the frame. Since Iowa DOT went to liquid salt brine in the early 90's cars and trucks are getting eaten up with body cancer. PS Ziebart guarantees 10 years on rust through, and I made it 11. PPS I've heard that the drain holes on rockers on Chevys get plugged up and helps cause rust? Anyone else know any info on if this is true or what can be done to make the situation better, i.e. drill out drain holes? Thanx.

1999 to 2006 full size Chevy and GMC trucks,rocker panels,the box sides and fenders are prone to rusting out.Brake lines,you don't replace one brake line.Touch one brake line,the next one will break replacing all 5 brake lines.Fuel pumps and don't ever buy the aftermarket fuel pumps,Delphi or AC Delco only.Airtex has a huge failure rate.

I second that!! I had a 98 k2500 and put about 100,000 miles on it. Yes, I did wheel bearings once, and as few axel seals, and so on. Did the work myself. It did have a lifter that was failing, which required removal of the intake manifold( I had done that job awhile ago after the gasket failed) and I decided it was time to trade. Now I have a 2016 2500hd with the 6.0L engine and I love it! No power anything.

Davis, F-150s are nowhere near the best. The 5.4 and 4.6 Ford engines are absolutely terrible engines, especially to work on. The Intake Manifold Problems, Cam Phaser Problems in the newer ones, even the oil filter location is crap. GM 4.8 is a better longer lasting engine than the 4.6, and the 5.3 compared to the Ford 5.4, well....we all know which engine is better there. The 10th Gen F-150 were the worst F150 made. My work has 10 of them, 6 of them are broke down. None have more than 150,000 miles. 3 Motor failures, 2 transmission failures, the other has a head gasket issue.

I guess it's time for my water pump to go, because my '04 Avalanche 1500 with 140K has had every one of these issues - in some cases multiple times. Oh, one you may have overlooked - the top of the fuel pump rusts out and starts spraying gas everywhere. That one was fun. Nice video, and right on the money. ;-)

My 2004 Silverado is about to hit 182k and so far none of this has shown up yet. I did replace the steering shaft and at 121k replaced the water pump gasket and pump. Water pump was still fine, but since I had it broke down to replace the gasket I went ahead and replaced the pump so I did not have to do it again later:P I do want to get mine up on a lift soon to check the joints out. Just traded in our 2002 Buick Century for a Ford 2015 Fusion. I am not a Ford guy, but my wife liked the car. Time will tell if it is as good as the Buick was. 15 years of service with 150k and all we ever did to it was front wheel bearings and intake manifold gasket.

Thanks for the video, just replaced rf hub on my 03 K1500 due to brg turning to gravel and set off ABS light today. Fortunately was not to hard to change it. The rear calipers were froze up when I went to go put rear brakes on. The u-joints are starting to pop when I give it gas. And the front end is chewing/cupping tires up due to the tie rod ends too, 100K REALLY!!! ARGH! I hope the antifreeze leak does not happen. Front axles look good for now. I bought it with 89K on it just last year and it seems to been pampered it's whole life. THANKS

We also have a suburban of the same year and model. We spent almost 5000 fixing it up and a few weeks back the radiator hose started leaking coolant on the street. Computer told me reduced engine power. Oil sending unit needs replacing, spedometer needs to be replaced, purge valve, headlights, fog light bumper and main front bumper, back right tire pressure monitor, lights on the temperature controls are out everything listed needs to be replaced., air is coming through the seal in the drivers door, and drivers mirror is wobbly, so i Will get wet when it rains. drivers window is scratched. Needs to be replaced. and steering feels very uncomfortably loose. I have a 2008 ford focus SE with 122,000 miles and it only needed a battery and some tires and an oil change and your normal fluid changes. These things are expensive and yet its been falling apart harder than I can replace the parts and faster than my car which is 2 years younger than the suburban. Also suburban only has 132,457 miles.

I have an 02 Silverado Ext cab long bed 4x4. It currently has 306k on the odo. Fortunately I live in Florida and don't have any rust issues. So far I've replaced 1 wheel bearing, Inner tie rods and the Pitman arm. That's it as far as the steering & suspension. I still have the original ball joints, shocks, springs etc. It rides great still. I've replaced the entire brake system except the lines. I've done the fuel pump. The a/c compressor just went at 290k. I haven't replaced it yet since it's cool out now, but I'll have to do it within the next couple of months. That's pretty much it for the whole truck. I've done belts, hoses & tuneups of course too. I can't speak for the newer models, but my old Chevy has been great. I'm afraid to replace it because the new one probably won't live up to my last experience. Plus, I'm currently putting about 300 miles a day on this truck and I really don't want to put that kind of miles on a truck that I'm making payments on. If I have to, I'll probably just drop a re-manufactured motor or tranny in it and keep driving it, but for now it's all good still.

In the lower 48 you also want to check your brake lines where they go through the frame for rusting out and the fuel line that runs across the top of the gas tank rusts through. I had to replace all the brake lines and fuel line on my 2004 GMC 4X4 truck at 54,000 miles and it's never been near salt water and has only been driven in the snow one time as I'm retired and don't have to go out in bad weather!

I had a '97 Silverado 4-wheel drive (second owner) with 70,000 miles. A beautiful truck, chrome, red, then more chrome-brushed stainless. I've always regretted getting rid of it......until i watched your video, now I feel relieved. The front end never felt 'right', always seemed like a weak point.

Thanks for sharing the your video, I have replaced the upper and lower control arm and inner and Outter tie rods rotors and drum rotors in the rear brakes and the best break pads one could buy new shocks even though they don’t need it new tires new power steering pump and cooler! It’s a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 with 165,000 miles on it I have had it for one year now now it needs a torsion bar mounts. I have put $3,500 into my truck, I have owned a s10 Chevy truck but this is my first time owning a full size truck. I really love this truck and the guy I bought it for had the motor and transmission rebuilt on it at 100,000 miles oh and it has new brake lines on it as well, if it didn’t have a rebuilt motor and transmission I would have not put all that money into it that’s for sure, I can’t stress how much I really love this truck!!!!

+DoctorD907 my 2004 chevys has 130miles and i have low oil pressure when it warms up goes up once i go when i atop comes back down i change the oil pressure sensing unit and it still the same sometimes a lil knocking sound...any ideas what might be wrong?

+559 calii sounds like a bad bearing man ..by any chance did the truck over heat before that started to happen ???

+1sikR6 Oo no i dont think so i bought it like that i change the oil sending unit bcause the old 1 didnt work the needle would move anymore until i put in the new sending unit thats when it started to mark the low oil pressure
